The Elemental Qualities of Pisces
The Mutable Water Sign

Sun in Pisces sextile Pluto in Capricorn

The Sun in Pisces forms the departing sextile with Pluto in Capricorn around the midnight hour tonight. Generically, this is an aspect that happens once a year, but we've begun to work with the Pisces / Capricorn sextile as of last year, instead of the Aquarius / Sagittarius sextile that occurred over and over starting in 1995. After much experience, we know that combination and its prospects very, very well.

So, in some ways this sextile is a very old, familiar friend. It's happened in some combination of signs every year since you were born. (Before Pluto's entry into Sagittarius brought the Sagittarius / Aquarius combination, it was the Scorpio / Capricorn sextile, starting in 1983 ... and before that the Libra / Sagittarius sextile beginning in 1971. And if you're old enough you've worked with the Virgo / Scorpio combination, from 1956 -- and the Leo / Libra one as well -- which began in 1938.)

So ... it's back again -- but now -- with Pluto's recent move into Capricorn, it's dressed up in new clothes, with new interests ... and it will be presenting the exotic gifts of Pisces / Capricorn for us to have, learn about, work with and enjoy -- until the signs change again in 2024. Ok ... let's talk about this combination, and what Astrology says it brings to light your world for the next 15 years.

An Astro-Essay on Aquarius
Defining the Zodiac's Radical Rebel

There are a bunch of planets in the sky in Aquarius right now -- with more to come. Mars arrived on February 4 ... and Mercury, once out of retrograde, returned to the sign on Valentine's Day. Right now, Jupiter, Neptune and the Sun are in the sign -- major players in anybody's book ... and the New Moon Lunation formed here in Aquarius in the early morning hours of January 26th. (Mountain Time.)

Planets in Aquarius, either transiting in the sky or sitting quietly (for the moment ... but only for the moment) in a Natal Chart, obviously bring a special measure of Aquarius magic out onstage where everyone can appreciate its ... umm ... unique charm. First of all, it would be nice to know what to expect. (It would be especially nice for me to know, since I'm writing this presentation!) The fact is, with Aquarius, you just can never tell. Aquarius energy revels in its own originality. Being fresh, clever and "unpredictable" is its special delight.

Sure, there are some things you can say with certainly -- one of which is to expect the unexpected. (Yeah, that's a big help, isn't it?!!) But a description of Aquarius expressions and experiences must be painted with an even broader brush than usual -- because the "unexpected" ... and the unpredictable ... covers such a wide range of choices.

I can, of course, lay out some generalities, but you'll still have to look closely at the events and attitudes in your world -- and in you!! -- to see exactly how these are showing up. One thing for certain, they won't be the same for everyone ... and there's a greater chance that no two people will react to the same experience in the same way. Individual perception is a huge part of the current climate. That, I promise you, is the most important thing to keep in mind.

What else can I tell you about a time -- or a personality saturated with Aquarius energy? Oh, my goodness ... let me count the ways!!

The Fixed Air Sign

Aquarius is an Air Sign

The Air Signs of the Zodiac are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. There is one Air Sign for each of the Qualities -- Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Gemini is Mutable Air. Libra is Cardinal Air, and Aquarius is Fixed Air. Together, these three elements form the components in the pattern of the Grand Air Trine.

Air Signs are concerned with issues of communication and the practical applications of knowledge. Once Fire Sign energy has produced something worthwhile and Earth Sign energy has found a way to sustain and nourish it, Air Sign energy takes on the tasks of advertising its existence.

Signs in the Air element are considered masculine, which, in metaphysical terms means they are dynamic, outgoing, extroverted, and active. Like Fire signs ... Air signs make things happen. Air signs are sociable, intellectual creatures who live in a world of the mind. Aquarius is designated the Fixed Air sign ... a peculiar concept all by itself, whose very image describes the paradoxical, eccentric nature of the Aquarius spirit.

Aquarius expands the frontiers of "what we know" about almost everything ... and excels in the practical applications of knowledge. Aquarius is the Innovative Genius ... the person able to apply his own special brilliance to progressive causes. This is the humanitarian, the idealist, the altruist. He has an intellectual, intuitive grasp of universal principles, the physical and metaphysical laws that define reality as we know it. And Aquarius has the drive to use what he learns to insure greater, more inclusive well-being for society and all its citizens.

Aquarius is a Fixed Sign

The Fixed Signs of the Zodiac are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. There is one Fixed Sign for each of the Elements -- Fire, Earth, Air and water. Taurus is Fixed Earth. Leo is Fixed Fire. Scorpio is Fixed Water and Aquarius is Fixed Air. There are two masculine fixed signs and two feminine fixed signs.

These form two pairs of oppositions in the Zodiac (Taurus and Scorpio oppose one another; Leo and Aquarius oppose one another.) ... and each element in these oppositions squares the elements of the other. These four signs together form the pattern of the Fixed Grand Cross in which element has an agenda, a perspective on life and a set of values that antagonizes the other three.

Fixed Signs, as the name implies, are set in their ways. They hold ideas and attitudes that are underlined with determination and not really open to debate -- or change. They have "their own ways of doing things" and resist outside pressures to consider other possibilities ... treating this as interference more than helpful input -- or an array of other choices.

This can shut down cooperation from people and conditions that won't just placidly go along with Fixed energy dictates, but it does contribute a nice measure of persistence that gets the job done, if only through dogged resolve. Fixed sign energy will take on formidable challenges, even ones they know from the start they will never see to the end because the ventures themselves are so vast.

Aquarius is designated the Fixed Air sign ... literally the brains behind Fixed energy's infamous tenacity. Aquarius has a vision of what need to happen, what needs to change in order to improve the future for everyone ... present-day citizens and future generations alike.

It has a set of plans on how to accomplish this, and it is notorious for brooking no delays and no detours ... other than the ones it instigates all on its own. Paradox, remember is one of Aquarius most prominent traits. According to the Doctrines of Aquarius, its rules are meant to be followed -- until it chooses to break them, which it does regularly.

Mercury is back in Aquarius

Mercury, recently out of retrograde, has moved back into Aquarius. It will travel there until March 8 and move out of its own shadow (pass the degree at which it turned retrograde) on February 21.

When Mercury is in Aquarius, ideas are eclectic, progressive, and versatile. Thinking is independent and ingenious. Original views spring forth as if neither your head nor your tongue can hold them all. This energy is idealistic, inventive, unorthodox and visionary. You may surprise yourself with what you hear in your own words ... or see written on paper in your own prose.

This energy ushers in interesting, highly charged, imaginative notions and ready-to-take-a-risk options -- in an "anything goes" free-for-all brainstorming session that really can last for weeks. What is a conjunction?

Theoretically, a conjunction occurs when two or more planets occupy exactly the same degree and minute of arc in a sign - as part of the circle of the Zodiac. As a practical matter, there is about 8 to 10 degrees of latitude in the definition of a conjunction. (In other words, planets less than 8 to 10 degrees apart in a sign are still considered to be conjunct with one another.) Well, it was an interesting eclipse that arrived yesterday ... the Leo Full Moon opposing the Aquarius Sun. First of all, there's a throng of astrological placements in Aquarius right now. Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Neptune and the Moon's North Node. Mercury will arrive here on Valentine's Day. That puts some pretty heavy emphasis on this sign of friends, social connections and career alliances. There's a huge temptation to cram your calendar with social events, get-togethers with people you enjoy ... all kinds of fun stuff.

The Full Moon in Leo
Opposing the Sun in Aquarius

Despite the winter season, the Full Moon in Leo brings a warm, playful, charismatic energy that wants to be noticed ... one that will make an effort to satisfy this yen. Metaphorically, it's time to assess your personal talents and compare them to your long-term goals. The inner, emotional part of you wants applause, attention, and plenty of cheering from the assembled throngs -- for the deeply generous, highly visible, flamboyant character you can be ... when you try.

Another part of you wants to kick over the traces and do something wild, something different, something totally independent and oh-so-unique. It's an eccentric, explosive energy that just waits for the slightest spark to detonate in either a totally off-the-wall adventure ... or a deafening display of emotional fireworks. It's a time for you to ask yourself seriously ... just what does it mean to you to "be yourself" ... and what are you willing to do (what cost are you willing to pay) to reach that happy place?

This is not a combination made for self-control. There's too much of "the Devil may care" mixed into both these signs --and when they stress one another, bizarre decisions, impulsive moves, and a capricious, unstable state of mind can cause enough problems to send the Devil running for cover ... just to get out of the line of fire.

The best advice for the moment is to be careful what you say ... and even more careful what you do. Your impulses may seem, in fantasy, like great ideas for plenty of reasons ... but when the dust settles you could wind up wishing you'd used a little more common sense, a little more restraint, a bit of "count to ten." Frankly, such things are in awfully short supply now. It is possible to have fun, be yourself, and not "lose it completely over the next few weeks. Keep reminding yourself of this ... if you find that simple fact slipping away.

The Saturn / Uranus Opposition
Round Two -- February 2009

When an aspect forms between planets that make one contact with each other, then with one element in retrograde form the aspect again, and finally form the aspect for the last time when the faster-moving of the pair finally turns direct and moves on down the road, we can either get a lengthy time of benevolent help and progress, (if the aspect is a conjunction, sextile or trine) ... or a protracted period of misery and upset (if the aspect is a square or opposition.)

It's like a symphony, which opens with a relatively simple statement of theme ... which develops for a while, then winds around on itself and restates the theme -- this time with complications and embellishments. And finally, after side-trips, flourishes and considerable mucking around ... restates the musical theme and melody for a final time, in all its splendid and intricate grandeur. Right now, with this aspect, we're in the middle of the show. We've gotten a real good taste of what this experience will be about. Now, the experience gets more intense ... and interesting.

Mars in Aquarius

In Astrology, Mars represents your ability to take assertive action; your capacity for aggression; your outward sexual expression; your use of energy, force and willpower to achieve your ambitions and desires; your ability to be direct and independent; and your competitive spirit.

The sign Mars occupies in the Zodiac by transit -- in other words, the sign it is traveling through in the sky in present day time -- will focus call for action and require work in certain "generic matters" represented by the sign itself. You are also more likely to show and work with the characteristics associated with the sign in the things you do and the choices you make.

If you have your Natal Mars in Aquarius, you often succeed simply because you will not take no for an answer. People who know you learn this quickly and give you a clear operating field - rather than deal with you when you're frustrated. Those who don't know you soon learn ... you don't take kindly to disappointment. You work around it any way you can.

Ironically, though, you and your motives are humane, fraternal, tolerant, conscientious, and ethical ... despite your sometimes unpredictable and "pushy" methods. You're not interested in "personal victory at any cost." In fact, you are kind, even idealistic, in your tactics. You won't betray your principles just to reach your goals and desires. Sure, you want to win (and leave no stone unturned to do so), but you want an unblemished victory.

When Mars in the sky travels through Aquarius (or as Astrologers say, when Mars transits through Aquarius), people are are altruistic, humanitarian, adventurous, and extremely future-oriented. Their tactics and aims are adventurous, unorthodox, imaginative, and versatile. This energy supports group ventures such as clubs, associations, educational classes and seminars, philanthropic organizations, social networks, and activities shared with friends.

Venus moves into Aries
What does this change mean to the world ... and you?

In Astrology, Venus represents your power to attract love and conduct relationships; your need for money and pleasure; your involvement with income, possessions and material "things:" what you look for in relationships, what you offer another person as a partner; what you really enjoy and take pleasure in, and your abstract "values."

Mercury Goes Direct in Capricorn

Mercury, in retrograde the past few weeks, has taken a station at 22° Capricorn ... and will start moving forward again -- or appear to as seen from our particular vantage point here on Earth. Mercury -- nor any other planet, of course -- doesn't really stop dead in its tracks and travel back and forth in the sky during periods of retrograde and direct motion. They only appear to from our perspective because of the different orbits each of our planets travel and the fact that everything in the cosmos is, in fact, moving (forward!) all the time.
