Were You "Born on the Cusp?"
Examples of what this means
All Around the Zodiac
People born "on the cusp" of a point where the Sun changes from one sign to another in the Zodiac will show this "blending of qualities" between one sign and the next directly in their personalities and often in ways that can look and feel fairly schizophrenic. Quite literally, these complex souls will not be categorically one sign or the other, but a blending of both signs involved.

What Does It Mean to be "Born on the Cusp?"
A More User-Friendly Explanation
Being "born on the cusp" to most people means a birthday (usually their own) falls on or about the 21st of the month. This is approximately the day the Sun changes from one sign to another in the Zodiac, although calendars and other human structures being what they are, even that causes confusion. Sometimes the date is the 19th; sometimes the 23rd. People don't understand the discrepancies and may wonder for years which sign they actually are.

Born on the Cusp in Astrology
The Technical Explanation
A cusp, in architecture, physiology, dentistry ... and astrology, is a point where two things touch, intersect, or fit together -- one against the other. In astrology the point of the "cusp" is more abstract ... referring to the place in the continuum of the Zodiac or in a paper chart where a change occurs between one sign and the next or one house and the next.
In the circular chart of a horoscope -- the document an astrologer uses to read a person's character and the themes and trends of his life -- the cusps between the houses are marked by the dividing lines (like the spokes of a wheel) around the circle. They are assigned a specific degree and minute of arc within the 360° of the circle. (I know. Those of you who snoozed through geometry have no idea what I'm talking about.)
Let's try and put it another way for the non-math majors among us. (Let's also say from the outset it won't be easy, because astrology does necessarily include a certain amount of geometry and math.) All twelve signs of the horoscope are contained in the circle of the chart. Three hundred sixty degrees (in a circle) divided by twelve (the number of signs in the Zodiac) gives thirty degrees per sign.

What is a conjunction?
Theoretically, a conjunction occurs when two or more planets occupy exactly the same degree and minute of arc in a sign - as part of the circle of the Zodiac. As a practical matter, there is about 8 to 10 degrees of latitude in the definition of a conjunction. (In other words, planets less than 8 to 10 degrees apart in a sign are still considered to be conjunct with one another.) Metaphorically, this represents a uniting, blending and combining of the different energies involved.

A Solar Eclipse in Aquarius
The latest New Moon ... in Aquarius, at 6°30', also coincided with a Solar Eclipse.
In ancient times, eclipses were viewed with fear and wariness -- since they were imperfectly understood But even today, when we fully understand the cause of eclipses ... and can predict their appearances years in advance, there's still a definite ambivalence -- even among astrologers -- about this peculiar, visually stunning astronomical phenomenon.
From a strictly astrological viewpoint, a Solar Eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon occupy the same degree of a Zodiac sign and are positioned in the sky so that the Moon blocks the Sun from view ... either fully or partially. Thus, Solar Eclipses can only occur during a New Moon. (A Lunar Eclipse, on the other hand, occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon in a position to throw its own shadow against the Moon. Lunar Eclipses can only occur during a Full Moon.)
The New Moon, called a Lunation by astrologers occurs, when the Sun and Moon occupy the same sign, degree, and minute of arc in the Zodiac. Thus a New Moon, the conjunction of Sun and Moon in the same sign, occurs at specific degree and minute of that sign ... which then becomes important in determining the angles it forms with other planets in the sky at the time ... and with the planet placements in a person's Natal Chart.
If the New Moon coincides with a Solar eclipse and the lunation / eclipse point degrees form close aspects with Natal placements in a person's chart ... this tone and these concerns seem to linger well past the next lunation, and hang around until at least the next Solar Eclipse.

In Astrology, two planets that are in conjunction influence each other's expression to a tremendous extent. They operate like Siamese twins - the action of each impacting and affecting the other in an inescapable, inevitable way. Each planet involved in the conjunction will assume the colorings, qualities, and characteristics of its partner so that the unit is literally inseparable -- in the same way the color green contains the elements of both yellow and blue, but is still markedly different from either one of those original components.
A conjunction thus represents a strong, unbreakable alliance between the characteristics, assets, and methods of the two or more planetary placements. Because the planets operate in this united fashion - the personality matters and life concerns designated and governed by one cannot be considered without taking all the personality matters and life concerns designated and governed by the other(s) into account at the same time.

What is a Sextile?
A sextile is an angle between two planets of approximately 60 degrees + / - 8 degrees. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a benevolent, advantageous relationship to one another, each offering the other opportunities to work together for mutually favorable expression.
A sextile indicates that the personal qualities each planet represents support one another harmoniously in the character of the person whose chart contains them ... or that the elements the planets represent will work well together in the development of the event described in the chart.
Mars Sextiles
Mars sextiles show periods when constructive physical action, your willingness to take the bull by the horns and do something with your energy and ambitions forges new opportunities for progress and the creation of tangible results. When Mars is sextile to another planet, physical energy and ambition combine with the nature of the other planet in a partnership that gets things done.

Mercury Retrograde has returned to Capricorn
What does this change mean to the world ... and you?
In Astrology, Mercury represents your ability to think, study, learn, communicate, work with information ... and otherwise use your mind. The sign it occupied when you were born describes the basic traits and qualities of your mind and a general view of your interests -- the way you form opinions and handle knowledge -- that will characterize your personality -- and how it will develop in this life.
The sign Mercury occupies in the Zodiac by transit -- in other words, the sign it is traveling through in the sky in present day time -- will focus your attention and perspectives on certain "generic matters" represented by the sign itself. You are also more likely to show and work with the characteristics associated with the sign.
If you have your natal Mercury in Capricorn, you can be somewhat dictatorial how you think and express yourself, for you need people to respect your opinions as much as you do. Also, you aren't overly concerned about the petty needs of individuals; you're into making policy. When you think, it's on a grand scale, and you expect the products of your mind to have the stamina and merit to endure the test of time.
When Mercury in the sky travels through Capricorn (or as Astrologers say, when Mercury transits through Capricorn), ideas are cautious, conservative and serious. Thinking is concerned with prestige, reputation and honor for one's professional accomplishments. This energy is reliable, disciplined and hard-working -- and approaches new learning opportunities with attitudes that are determined, pragmatic and self-controlled.

When Mercury Moves Behind the Sun
When Mercury retrogrades, which it does about three times every year, it will at some point pass the Sun and move into what Astrologers call its trailing position. -- following the Sun instead of preceding it. Relatively speaking, this puts Mercury in a 12th House position to the Sun ... rather than the out-front 1st House position it occupies the rest of the time. Mercury is always very close to the Sun -- in a Natal Chart as well as in the sky. Astrologers know they are never more than 28° apart -- on paper.
There are also subtle but important differences in what Mercury in one position or the other means in interpreting the personality traits seen in a Natal Chart -- or the conditions and attitudes one can expect to find in present day time. Mercury "leading the Sun" means one thing. Mercury "trailing the Sun" means something else.

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius
Conjuncts and Moves Behind the Sun
When The Sun conjuncts Mercury, willpower, self-image, your sense of purpose, and your intellectual ambitions unite with your ability to think, reason and analyze, and use what you know. You're focused on thinking, speaking, and writing about things that interest you ... things you want to examine further.
This blend boosts intellectual creativity ... especially as described by the sign where the conjunction occurs and applied to the concerns of the house where this conjunction falls in your Natal Chart. (In this case, of course, the sign is Aquarius -- which deals with imagination, independence, visionary planning, networking, creating more progressive ideas, "trying new and different stuff," and infusing new vitality into your goals for the future.)
This energy does invite people to get wrapped up in pride issues ... and personal views ... and treat disagreements like personal attacks. The close bond between ego and opinions hinders objectivity, but the mental brilliance, stamina, and opportunities to use knowledge and information productively, combined with your ability to make your point is truly awesome.

The Sun moves into Aquarius this afternoon!
What does this change mean to the world ... and you?
In Astrology The Sun represents your ego, your basic sense of yourself. The sign it occupied when you were born describes basic traits, qualities and a general view of life that will characterize your personality -- and the gifts and interests you brought into this world
The sign The Sun occupies in the Zodiac by transit -- in other words, the sign it is traveling through in the sky in present day time -- will focus you and your interests on certain "generic matters" represented by the sign itself. You are also more likely to show and work with the characteristics represented by the sign involved.
If you have your natal Sun in Aquarius, your basic personality is humane, independent, progressive, intellectual and concerned with human welfare. Fundamentally, you are a mental pioneer, drawn to unusual, advanced ideas and you yourself think in unusual ways. Many of your concepts are progressive, advanced, even ingenious.
You can always find a new and improved way to do something, to approach some problem -- and you are always looking for more. Not many people can match you for sheer intellectual brilliance. You meet life's experiences with curiosity, objectivity, and analytical thinking.
You have a mind that receives information through sudden flashes of insight. You are often scientific in the way you approach life and the way you live it, and you are definitely a person ahead of your time.
When the Sun in the sky travels through Aquarius (from about January 19 to February 19), people are more adventurous, compassionate and imaginative. They value friendliness, creativity, ingenuity, freedom and tolerance. They focus on abstract concerns like their goals for the future, "making progress," being independent, taking up humanitarian interests, and dealing with friends and expanding their social network.

Mercury conjuncts Jupiter in Aquarius!
In Astrology, Mercury represents your ability to think, study, use information ... and otherwise use your mind. In Astrology, Jupiter represents your philosophical and ethical structures; your ability to claim and express your authoritative knowledge -- often through teaching others by the example of your own life. Aquarius is a sign that supports experimentation, breaking with tradition and creating something new, different and progressive.
Conjunctions form when two (or more) planets occupy the same degree and minute of arc in the Zodiac -- the same spot in the circle. They represent a union, a blending of the qualities and interests the individual planets represent separately. The energies and assets of planets in conjunction will operate as one unit, like inseparable Siamese Twins.
This blend of energy means something in and of itself ... and each astrology sign will experience its effects in at least two different areas of life.

The Sun is in Capricorn; The Moon is in Libra
This Earth Sign Sun / Air Sign Moon is a remarkable blend of practicality and charm. Technically, this combination describes signs that are in square with each other -- a clash of values, according to traditional Astrology. And yet while this may, indeed, describe tensions, ongoing concerns and problems with priorities felt by the individual who owns them, it can make for some very interesting results out in the real world. The native may have to constantly juggle his conflicting personality agendas. The rest of us sometimes can really appreciate the outcome.
Capricorn energy is interested in practical achievements, acquiring respect and public status, and creating durable, profitable results for the work it invests. Libra energy is interested in forming partnerships, negotiating win-win compromises between different factions with different agendas, and generally creating a more harmonious, pleasant place for itself -- and the rest of us -- to enjoy.
So ... what can this blend describe?
- The accomplished business person with a touch of real class and great people skills
- The conservationist with a keen grasp of how to use physical resources wisely -- and sell his concepts to the public
- The skilled politician and community leader who is also a cultured intellectual -- socially aware and full of great ideas

Mars in Capricorn
The planet of power
in the sign of the Builder
... getting us back on the rails
Presently in the sky, there is a remarkable celestial coincidence. Not an accident. A co-incidence. A simultaneous occurrence. One of those "happenings" that Jung called a synchronicity -- a synchronized occurrence whose presence carries a meaningful message. Mercury, Venus and Mars, the three innermost personal planets -- in the sky and in the protocols of Astrology, are all in the signs of their exaltation. Mercury in Aquarius, Venus in Pisces ... and Mars in Capricorn. In previous entries we've talked about the other two. Today, we're focused on Mars.
It's interesting to me that Mars is considered exalted in Capricorn -- Saturn's sign, but Saturn in Aries, the sign Mars rules is said to be in fall. Apparently, according to this logic, raw energy, force and power do right well inside the rules and regulations of structure, but permanent structures themselves don't thrive in the presence of raw energy, power and force. Ok, with a little tweaking, I suppose I can buy that logic. But I sprinkle the acceptance with several grains of salt.

Venus in Pisces
The planet of love and money
in the sign of selflessness and spirituality
... a gentle touch to start the new year
According to the rules of planetary dignities and debilities, Venus is exalted in Pisces. (See yesterday's post about what it means when a planet is in the sign of its exaltation.) Like Mercury, Venus rules two signs ... Taurus and Libra, the signs associated with money and relationships. And frankly, who doesn't sometimes go a little (ok, a lot) overboard when it comes to spending and for the sake of love.
In fact, it's disturbing how often Venus in either sign of its rulership can go over the top. Venus in Taurus can be extravagant, greedy and shamelessly hedonistic. Venus in Libra can be co-dependent, manipulative and clingy. Venus on her home turf needs to walk a very careful line not to be offensive, saccharine and shallow. This may be the case for any planet in its rulership sign. Like humans, these energies can be too comfortable in ways that really do not show their best face.

Mercury in Aquarius
The planet of the mind
in the sign of the genius
... in high gear and raring to go
Those that decide these things tell us Mercury is exalted in Aquarius. A planet in exaltation is in a sign which it does not rule but in which it is very comfortable. The natural expression of the planet ... the metaphors of its meaning ... find easy expression, certainly in the sign (or signs) it rules, but also in the sign of its exaltation. A planet in the sign it rules is like a person, safe in the home he owns, the lord of his own land, domicile and family circle. Literally, the king (or queen) of the castle.
A planet in exaltation is like a person in the home of his closest friend -- a place where his presence is honored, where he feels welcome, where his opinions and talents are free to shine ... where he can be exactly who he is and even raid the refrigerator!! A planet in exaltation is "almost as strong," almost "at home" ... and certainly able to let his best self shine because he and the qualities of the sign are compatible. They get along beautifully and are perfectly happy in one another's company. The freedom to be yourself, after all, is a perfectly wonderful thing.

Yods
When your life is touched by
The Finger of God
Yods are a distinctive pattern of aspects created when two planets (or placements such as the Ascendant or Mid-Heaven) which are sextile to one another also are both inconjunct to a third planet / placement ... which then forms the base of a "Y" configuration. On paper, in a Natal Chart for instance, the Y-shape of a yod is quite distinctive. Its meaning is, as well, though for a long time it was overlooked -- even ignored as having any significance.
Older Astrology texts taught that inconjuncts were a minor aspect, that you didn't have to worry about them much. Time, Life and experience, however, have convinced me they are anything but ... trivial. As you might expect, a yod, with its two-inconjuncts-in-relationship-to-one-another properties, doubles-down on the "meaning" it brings to a chart ... and modern astrologers consider the presence of a yod in a chart significant indeed. The yod, in fact, has such respect it has been called The Finger of God. With that title, it does start to sound pretty impressive.
As a practical matter, and maybe in defense of the old-timers who used to dismiss it completely, yods can seem to lie dormant in a person's chart for long periods. And certainly not every one who has one in his Astrological line-up is destined for greatness ... or even minor fame. My sense and experience tells me that the work of yods is usually not much apparent in the outside world ... except under certain extraordinary circumstances.
A native may need a good deal of experience with life and a distinct measure of intellectual maturity (and self-awareness) to even recognize the influence of a yod in his life ... and his psyche until, like the detonation of a bomb waiting silent and hidden for years, something happens to mark the action of a yod come to life -- and the consequences that follow in its wake.
A yod and its action may have Karmic roots ... which could explain why the meaning and consequence of the pattern itself remained obscure for so long, and why it is still often confusing, subtle and hard to explain to a client who isn't self-aware enough to recognize what you're describing ... and can't help you precisely define the kinds of things, feelings, attitudes and experiences you're trying to explain to him. A yod indicates a need for (or circumstances that will bring on) a profound emotional readjustment, a mental shift in consciousness ... a completely different way of seeing and working with life than was the case before.

The Mystic Rectangle
One of Astrology's Blessings in De Skies
You've heard of a Grand Trine ... and a T-Square ... and probably a Grand Cross. These are all patterns in Astrology that are not real common, but not real rare either. Each represents a complex configuration of energy. Each has its own problems and potentials. All can be memorable -- whether in a Natal Chart or just passing overhead in the sky.
More rare than these is something called the Mystic Rectangle. The very existence of this pattern and its meaning is rooted in the thoughts of Sacred Geometry ... a fairly abstract discipline that -- unless you really want to get into all its ins and outs -- you can consider sort of the Mathematics of the Spheres, the mathematical theory (and equations and formulas) that can explain on paper the workings of reality.
I know that sounds simplistic, and I don't mean to make light of it, because, no kidding, the mathematics that has described the physics of our Universe has made some positively miraculous things -- possible. It helps us understand how life and the mechanics of everything we know ... works. In its own way, it brings up giant steps and major leaps toward contact with the Mind of The Divine.
But the atmosphere in which it exists does get a little rarified and theoretical ... and past a certain point, I lose interest in it real fast. You can either feel the same way -- or obsess on it -- as you choose. In any case, you won't find much on the subject on the site from me.
A Mystic Rectangle, however, forms when two oppositions mediate one another. By that I mean when elements of each form mutual trines and sextiles and in doing so help balance and clarify the issues involved in the oppositions -- and the conflicts they always describe. Thus the pattern of a Mystic Rectangle will include two trines, two sextiles, and two oppositions -- all involving the same four planets. (Sounds almost like a Marriage Encounter Week-end, doesn't it? That's actually not a bad comparison.)
Ideally, the elements of a Mystic Rectangle will always be in the same gender -- either masculine Fire-and-Air or feminine Earth-and-Water. (Hmmm, starting to sound a little kinky there, huh?) Of course, as with the other recognized patterns of Astrology, it's possible for the aspects to form either very early or very late in their signs ... so that the angles are all valid, but their lack of exactness corrupts the gender identity. (If you've studied Astrology long enough to know what I'm talking about, great! If not ... don't worry about it. It's one of those technical points that is interesting-but-not-important.)
Planets in the same gender simply relate to one another naturally. They get along. They fill in and support one another's values, even if they don't hold those principles themselves or show much respect for them in their own behavior. In a plain oppositions, two elements of life -- or your character - are "at odds" with one another. Balancing the interests of each so that neither is slighted is a constant challenge. Oppositions always involve relationship issues -- which adds more complications to the mix.

Mercury Again
Doing Its Retrograde Thing
In Astrology, Mercury represents your ability to think, study, use information ... and otherwise use your mind. Aquarius is an energy that encourages your ideals, your altruism, your hopes and dreams for the future, and your involvement with friends and like-minded visionaries.
When Mercury is in Aquarius, ideas are eclectic, progressive, and versatile. With Mercury in Aquarius, thinking shows independence, philanthropy, originality, and ingenuity. The energy of Mercury in Aquarius is humanitarian, inventive, unorthodox and visionary.
When Mercury is retrograde (Mercury Rx -- in shorthand), it brings a time of rethinking, refocusing and re-communicating. Metaphorically, Mercury represents your use of intellectual energy; your mental focus; the application of your mind's assets; your ability to read, write, study, talk, absorb information and learn new things; your communication skills, your use of knowledge, your own mind's individual perspective; and your ability to be mobile, to move around, both physically and intellectually.
Mercury Rx, for all its aggravations -- and those can be serious -- is an exercise in thinking better by thinking differently ... breaking out of tunnel-vision into more creative possibilities. That's perhaps the best gift of this pesky little phenomenon. It also symbolizes experiences that are not nearly so charming.
Mercury "goes retrograde" two or three times a year and remains so for about three and a half weeks. It goes retrograde more often than any other planet, but stays that way for a shorter time ... each time. Theoretically, I suppose it balances out. In real life, it often doesn't seem that way.
When Mercury retrogrades, a specific area of your life undergoes all this re-formulation, and benefits in the end from a truly helpful intellectual renewal. If you know where this happening is in your natal chart, you can not only watch the results as they occur ... you can appreciate the construction that's underway ... and maybe even help it along.
That is, indeed, the best use to make of this time when greater self-awareness, introspection, pondering, contemplating, meditating and even praying are legitimate and helpful responses to what is taking place -- all over the world.
When Mercury retrogrades in Aquarius, our Premium Members receive specific information on what to expect during this time, how to work with the energy and its opportunities and how to use Mercury in Aquarius ... even when retrograde ... to their advantage.

The Full Moon in Cancer
Opposing the Sun in Capricorn
Recommended Book from Amazon

The Moon in Your Life: Being a Lunar Type in a Solar World
By
Donna Cunningham
The opposition between the Moon in Cancer and the Sun in Capricorn centers on the conflict between the role you play in your public life and profession and the one you have in your home and family circle. Both are necessary to a full and well-rounded existence, but unless you're one of the lucky few who has managed to integrate the two so you don't have to constantly time-share one with the other (or slight one in favor of the other) ... this is a tension you will try to integrate and balance all your adult life.
When the Sun is in Capricorn, attention is directed full bore toward your career interests ... "making something of yourself," taking up a public life and forging your place in the world. The energy of the Sun in Capricorn is button-down and all-business. It has no time for feelings and no patience with tender interests ... things like sentiment, compassion, feelings and family ties.
For Capricorn, the world is a hard place, and the sooner you learn that lesson and toughen up, the better for everyone. Especially you. That's the message it delivers. Loud, clear and constantly. Wherever Capricorn is located in your Natal Chart is where you want to be respected in the world, where you want to have control and command ... and where you feel most vulnerable and open to criticism, no matter what kind of results you produce there.
The Moon in Cancer, however, is imbued with the special strength that comes to a placement in the sign it rules. It will not slink away quietly under Capricorn's scowl. It pulls attention emphatically toward inner needs, family interests, private life concerns ... the need for home safety and family protection ... all the tender, sensitive moments and connections that for many of us makes life itself worth living.
Thus the Full Moon in Cancer opposing the Cancer Sun is about dealing with your inner needs and, at the same time, trying to meet public and professional expectations you've taken on. The Full Moon always represents a balancing act, trying to find the perfect pivot point between one extreme and the other ... and the discomfort it brings is usually connected to the realization that you're not really able to satisfy either side the way you'd like. Certainly not the way they'd like.
You do eventually have to make some choices, but once a year, in every sign, in every area of life, you are given the chance to examine and adjust those choices ... before the tides of time move on. Coming face to face with the realization that you are trying to serve two exclusive, full-time masters ... and stepping back from this no-win arrangement ... does have that effect. And under the Full Moon in Cancer, that's where we are. All of us.

The Sun in Capricorn sextile Uranus in Pisces
The Sun in Capricorn forms a sextile with Uranus in Pisces this morning. For those of you still learning the language of Astrology, a sextile is an aspect -- a mathematical relationship between two planets or other placements, such as the Ascendant -- in a Natal Chart ... or in the sky. An aspect is an angle -- and a sextile is an angle of approximately 60°. (In fact, an exact aspect -- such as happens today between The Sun and Uranus -- is exactly that ... 60° 0' of arc between planets.) You can read more about the meaning of a sextile here: Sextile .
Aspects involving The Sun (again, in a Natal Chart or in the sky) describe situations where your ego, personal power and charisma are involved in the opportunities or problems that arise. Since sextiles are pleasant arrangements -- "good aspects" for those pragmatic souls who like to think in nice either-or terms ... the energy forming now -- and lasting for several weeks -- suggests you, your personality and your ambitions are in line for some nice cosmic invitations and benefits. In other words, who you are, how you act and how you present and see yourself are assets you can use to make the most of gifts and goodies coming your way.
So dig into your bag of Capricorn traits and tricks. Put on your sane-and-sensible business face. Get organized. Show some maturity -- or at least act your age!! Polish your image ... and put your professional standing and achievements out where they can be seen and admired. Act like an authority -- and show off what you do, what you're good at, what you do for a living. If you don't have an honest to goodness career ... show off the traits you want to be known and remembered for when people mention your name. Everyone has some of those!
Have a little self-discipline. (More if you can manage it.) Do what you need to do to be impressive ... to potential clients and customers who can use your services and knowledge; to colleagues whose different skills, abilities and connections can help extend your reach and your reputation; to the mentors, teachers and authorities in your field ... people with the political pull and position to help you get where you want to go. It's time to make tracks ... and under the Capricorn Sun, the strides you take and the gains you make could be profitable indeed!

Tonight's T-Square
Moon in Gemini square
Saturn in Virgo square Uranus in Pisces
There's another T-square involving the Moon tonight as it passes through Gemini and becomes void of course just before midnight MT. (Mountain Time.) We're going to get a lot of these as the Saturn in Virgo / Uranus in Pisces opposition plays out its glacial game of "Mexican Stand-off" all year long -- and that will be part of our lives during all of the coming year. (So, we might as well get used to it ... like an annoying relative we have to live with -- or who has to live with us ... for reasons we just can't escape.)
The mobile Moon has two positions from which it can form T-squares with this opposition ... so we'll get a dose of each every single month from here 'til the end of next December -- when this aggravating pattern finally, finally, finally unlocks!! When the Moon is in Gemini ... that's one location. That's the case tonight. When the Moon is in Sagittarius ... that's the other location. Which we'll see in about two weeks. Consider it the cosmic version of PMS twice a month. (Don't you love the image???)
In "astrologese" -- A T-square is a very active but highly uncomfortable pattern which consists of an opposition between two or more planets and a third planet placed at a point square to these. This combines all the difficulties of an opposition (relationship problems and blockages) with the complications of a square (both elements of the opposition being hindered, aggravated, frustrated, stimulated, or pushed by demands from the metaphorical components of the energy represented by the planet forming the square.)
In plain English (sort of) -- The Saturn / Uranus opposition brings a year when the longing for more privacy, more "alone time," more freedom, more time to work on healing projects and creative interests is hampered horribly by a brimful schedule of practical responsibilities, health concerns, a lot of lifestyle challenges, sheer grinding drudgery and tons of thankless work to do that only you can handle. (I'll talk more about this as this particular theme continues ... and the additions to this thread arrive! For now ... that's the underlying issue!!)
When the Moon in Gemini is square to this slow-moving, conflicted pattern, you feel emotionally and intellectually overloaded. You may be moody and stressed for a list of reasons as long as your arm (all of which you can name at a machine-gun pace) ... and at the same time, you feel like your mind is running a mile a minute with thoughts of new things you must ... or would like to ... do -- if only you had time, if only you had help, if only you could delegate some of the scut-jobs to somebody else, if only the results you're working for didn't take so damn much work, if only you could concentrate on one thing at a time!!, if only life weren't such a drag!!!
You feel overloaded with images and information -- but infuriatingly hampered by stubborn, ongoing constraints and all the work you have to do on the one hand ... and edgy to the point you want to just blow your stack, throw up your hands, and go live on an island somewhere ... on the other. It's a volatile blend where the least little thing could send you into a tantrum ... or a crying jag ... or both. I did say PMS, remember. Did you think I was kidding?

The Sun is in Capricorn; The Moon is in Gemini
To an astrologer, this is an intriguing, complex mix. There is no common ground between these two signs, making the blend one of the Zodiac's odd couples. Here we have Capricorn, the sane-and-sober businessman, paired up with Gemini, the talk-a-mile-a-minute stand-up comedian. And they have to live in the same body and express themselves through the same personality .... Well, see what I mean about "odd."
With the Moon in Gemini, the emotions ... which are the natural territory of the Moon ... can be overshadowed by the logical, intellectual perspectives of Gemini -- ruled by Mercury, the symbol of the conscious mind. Here logic and instincts are fused in a blend that is not natural, but can be very useful, very workable indeed!
Gemini is great when it comes to gathering and using information, analyzing (and collecting for future use) the facts it finds. It loves to talk, read, move around, share ideas. It is fast, flexible, clever and infinitely mobile. With the icon of the Twins in the Zodiac as its symbol, if it can't actually be in two places at once, it can sure make it look like that for all practical purposes. And when it comes to holding two ideas, multiple opinions or several different points of view at the same time ... hey, that's no problem at all.
Capricorn on the other hand wants stability, respect, dependable notions to promote and reliable positions to count on. It supports traditional tactics, tried-and-true strategies. It believes in things like structure, hierarchy, rules-and-regulations, loyalty, a pre-defined pecking-order and the chain-of-command so dear to the mindset of institutions, government and all places where vested power and politics are revered.
Put these together and you get a most fascinating blend of the entrepreneur who craves the respect and backing of The Establishment, but who loves to be on the cutting edge of knowledge ... working on "what's new and clever" in his chosen field. You get the military strategist who takes what he learned "at the academy" ... and builds on it using the knowledge he's gained on his own about today's needs and contemporary challenges. You get the writer, thinker, inventor, or entertainer with amazing ambition and great business sense. You get the politician who can deliver a speech polished enough to charm the angels.
What you do not get ... is something or someone ordinary.

Saturn is Retrograde in Virgo
As 2009 faded into history, Saturn took a station at 22° of Virgo and turned retrograde. It will travel back to 15° of Virgo between now and the middle of May.
When Saturn retrogrades in Virgo, it's time to reconsider the way you structure and conduct the work you do. By "work," I don't mean just the "job" you do for money, but all the things that are considered "your jobs" and that have to happen to keep life's business on-track and the flow of your existence moving smoothly.
This means the daily routines, the mundane and boring "stuff" that is just a necessary part of life, the chores, errands, tasks, responsibilities and commitments you do for yourself and to make the lives of others easier because of the effort you made.
Saturn retrograde in Virgo is also a time to look at how to achieve satisfactory quality in the work you do ... and the life you live ... without obsessing on "perfection." Letting go of that requirement alone could give you a little more breathing room ... which you definitely could use about now.
And speaking of breathing, Saturn in Virgo is also a time when you have to reconsider the stress you're under, the demands you make of yourself physically ... and find time for more self-care and deal with health maintenance concerns that you've been putting off -- in the name of "getting the work done."
If you fall apart physically, wind up ill, or wear yourself into exhaustion so you can't function at all ... that's no help to anyone. (And if that happens ... who's going to take care of you and all your work then? Yes, indeed. Isn't that a sobering thought??)

The Sun is in Capricorn; The Moon is in Taurus
When the Sun is in Capricorn, the Taurus Moon is or soon will be Gibbous. Somewhere in this phase, The Moon forms the departing trine with the Sun -- bringing the first opportunity to make easy, productive, tangible results from the creative possibilities passing between these two essential energies.
The Sun in Capricorn is out to create lasting structures, make contributions to the community, accomplish worthwhile things that other people can use, bolster its own reputation and value and impress the socks off "The Establishment" ... people with authority whose opinions count and who can help further Capricorn's own grand ambitions. Capricorn never plays for small stakes ... or abstract ones either.
The Taurus Moon understands this attitude perfectly. It knows about the value of money, the need for nourishment, the absolute requirement everything has to establish itself, feed itself and survive. When this combination arrives, as it does once a year, life's overall tone is extremely practical ... and the focus on things like profit, dividends, and the bottom line is intense. You may look carefully at your bank account, your checkbook balance, your spending choices and your income sources ... and base decisions on what you find there.
If you have this ever-so-sensible combination in your Natal Chart, those concerns are the bedrock of your personal values. You may be extremely good at taking care of yourself and your loved ones, but behind your every move and decision is this emphasis on getting enough value for your purchase, finding the right bargain, being sensible in your spending, and believing everything "has a price." Sometimes it's hard to argue with such hard-headed logic, but if folks see you as materialistic -- even mercenary, penny-pinching and money-conscious -- it's not hard to find the reasons why.

The Sun is in Capricorn; The Moon is in Aries
When the Sun is in Capricorn, the Aries Moon is or soon will be at the First Quarter. In the First Quarter the Moon forms the departing square with the Sun bringing the first stressful Sol-Lunar aspect since the New Moon formed.
While the Sun is in Capricorn, the essential focus ... the basic energy loose in the world ... is on professional attainment, career progress, public life projects, one's fame, reputation and community standing. Capricorn is one of the most image-conscious signs in the Zodiac. It cares a lot about having public acceptance, garnering respect, doing the "proper" thing, and impressing "the right people."
The Aries Moon is equally full of passion and drive, but it's not nearly so concerned with having the good opinion of the powers that be. The energy of the Aries Moon is independent, blunt, impatient ... and pulls no punches in expressing its feelings, views and reactions. It is notorious for "calling 'em as it sees 'em" ... with a let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may attitude that can give strait-laced Capricorn epileptic fits when a fed-up Aries Moon throws caution out the window and really speaks its mind.
So, when this pattern forms in the sky ... as it does once a year, it's a time to balance, as best you can, your professional ambitions (and your Inner Critic's telling you all the things you should, must, and have to do) and your personal independence (as another Inner Self snipes at you for being a brown-nosed coward.) If you have this combination in your Natal Chart, you live with this tension constantly. And Lord knows ... it ain't easy!

Venus moved into Pisces today.
Venus in Pisces is also in the sign of its exaltation. In plain English, this means that the planetary symbol of love and money is very comfortable and very well suited to the selfless, spiritual nature of this sign. Pisces energy brings a special compassion to Venus, making possible a charitable, poetic kind of love ... a love that is timeless and tolerant, that will forgive a great deal with saintly grace and which sees through many failings, straight to the soul of the beloved.
In fact, that can be the downside of this highly devoted combination. When Venus is in Pisces in the sky, you'll put up with treatment you shouldn't allow for a minute -- all in the name of love. And if you have Venus in Pisces in your Natal Chart you may have an absolute gift for finding people to love who aren't very loveable ... and who may benefit from the relationship -- and all you give to it -- far, far more than you ever will.

The Sun is in Capricorn; The Moon is in Pisces
When the Sun is in Capricorn, the Pisces Moon is or soon will be Crescent. The ever-mobile Moon in this oh-so-perceptive sign brings surprising intuitive depth to the no-nonsense, bottom-line interests of Capricorn and softens what can sometimes be an aloof and chilly personality.
The Pisces Moon under the Capricorn Sun is inquisitive, savvy and able to work with information both intellectually and intuitively. It reads the world around it with a special kind of radar, and can size up a situation by instinct. It "just knows" what's going on, what to expect, what to do to make the right move -- or say the right word -- at the right time.
It's a special gift that comes to us all for a couple of days once a year -- and if you have this rare blend of sensitivity and common sense in your Natal Chart, you are especially blessed. You may be all-business and practicality on the outside, but you have one of the kindest, gentlest hearts in the Zodiac.
You know how to help your loved ones -- anyone really -- because you feel their desires and needs as keenly as your own. Being a Capricorn, you usually have a fair bit of treasure and talent to help solve their problems -- and your generosity is legendary, maybe more than is really good for you, if you listened only to Capricorn's conservative litany.
Fortunately for a world that needs your example of how a hard-headed business person can also be a humanitarian, you listen to your heart a lot. And we are all the better for it.

Mercury moved into Aquarius today.
What better way to begin a brand new year (especially for the creative types and eggheads among us) than with Mercury, the astrological symbol of thought and great ideas in the sign of its exaltation. Aquarius!! Where Mercury is fired-up and beyond exuberant!! When this combination gets together -- which it does about once a year -- intellectual lightning is sure to follow. Aquarius energy is eclectic, progressive, versatile and ingenious ... and Mercury, one of the sky's most flexible citizens, seems tailor-made to romp to sheer exhaustion on its playgrounds!
When Mercury is in Aquarius in the sky, thinking shows independence and inventiveness galore. Creative thoughts sizzle in the caldron of this electric combination. Your own brilliance may amaze you -- if you're brave enough to give it free rein and follow where it leads. If you have Mercury in Aquarius in your Natal Chart, those who know you marvel at your originality and genius. You are usually two or three leaps ahead of everyone else around you in every conversation -- and may have trouble finding people ... friends and loved ones ... whose minds can keep up with yours.
So here at the start of a brand new year, let the fireworks in your head, your heart and your soul begin Learn what it's like to be "one of a kind." Stand back ... and prepare to be dazzled.
