The Inner Sky: How to Make Wiser Choices for a More Fulfilling Life
By
Steven Forrest
In addition to separating the signs in Astrology by gender, there are two other fundamental ways of dividing the Zodiac signs into categories: The Elements and The Qualities, also known as the triplicities and the quadruplicities. Today, we'll talk about the elements. There are four categories of elements in Astrology, and they are the familiar elemental building block of reality used by science and other occult disciplines. These are fire, earth, air and water -- the raw materials of the physical world. There are three signs in each of these four divisions.

At a very rudimentary level, Astrology considers that signs that share an element category are naturally compatible with one another. Each one supports the interests of the others in some way. Each one shares common values with the other two members of its division. Each one understand what motivates, excites and drive the others ... because those things do the same for him.

Fire signs and Air signs are considered masculine, extroverted, dynamic and active. The traits and interests of Fire signs and Air signs are considered either compatible or complementary with one another. On the other hand, the Earth signs and Water signs are considered feminine, introverted, responsive and passive. The traits and interests of the Earth signs and Water signs are considered either compatible or complementary with one another. Most "compatibility astrology" operates on little more than this basic assumption.

Knowing which element contains each sign tells us a lot about that sign's perspective on life, what motivates it -- and what it considers fundamentally important. This affects -- in fact, it almost dictates -- how each sign sees the world, the perspectives it holds and how it interprets the information it receives about life from its experiences in the material world. An element's concerns provides a lens of awareness for each sign that can sometimes remind you of the old story about the blind men and the elephant.

Fire signs simply see life differently than do the Water Signs ... or even the Air Signs, the element with which they are most compatible outside their own group. Just as two people will look at the same scene or the same painting and see different things, the different elements look at life and see there confirmation for their ideas and beliefs ... and thus reinforce their notions of "what life is all about."

The Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Fire signs are motivated by leadership potentials and personal glory. The Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Earth signs are motivated by practical matters, material acquisition and "survival interests." The Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Air signs are motivated by their intellect and the manipulation of knowledge and ideas. The Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Water signs are motivated by feelings, emotion and intuition.

The ideal character contains a little bit of all these qualities, but it's no surprise that life -- and things in life -- are rarely ideal. In practice there are elementally well-balanced souls ... and there are others who are heavily invested in one particular element. This, all by itself, tells an Astrologer a lot about each person's character and how he will engage the world.

Pisces
The Sign of the Mystic

Pisces is the twelfth sign of the Zodiac. It follows Aquarius in the Zodiacal line-up. As a rule, the range of Pisces covers the time from February 20 until March 20th. It is a time of rest, recuperation, healing, planning, inspiration, and making background preparations for new ventures to launch when Aries arrives.

The Virtues and the Downside of Pisces
The Pros and Cons of this Astrology Sign

As with all the signs, Pisces has its positive points and its problems. Pisces is quiet, pensive and self-sacrificing. It encourages attitudes and moods that are reflective, compassionate and caring. But it can also be impractical, helpless and neurotic.

Today, Let's Talk About Feminine Signs in Astrology
What are they and why are they important?

The three Earth signs -- Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn -- and the three Water signs -- Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are considered feminine. Feminine signs are subdued (compared to the masculine signs,) reflective, cautious and practical. They prefer to either work with assets already in hand or attract what they need rather than going out and scrapping over it.

Thus they have personalities that are quieter, more passive and accepting, less combative than the masculine signs -- more prone to react than to act as the "first cause" in a chain of events. If you have planets in feminine signs in your horoscope, you will use the qualities of those signs more noticeably to satisfy the life agendas represented by each of those planets.

Where you have feminine signs on the house cusps of your chart, you will work with materials on hand, allow situations to change on their own, let things "come to you," and take a "wait-and-see" approach in satisfying the interests of those houses. (Clearly women have more social permission than men to act this way in general. Patient, protective women are called "cooperative" and "good partners." Patient, protective men are called "wimpy" ... and worse.)

If you have more planets in feminine signs than masculine signs, these quiet, practical qualities are more apt to define your character ... and, again, you may either benefit or encounter problems as a result.

Taurus is practical and nurturing, but it can also be stubborn and materialistic. It is extremely skilled at stabilizing, financing and profiting from new ventures -- and sustaining new life Virgo is organized and detail-conscious, but it can also be critical and overly fussy. It is the tireless worker ... the productive service person who sees to life's routine business and keeps "everything on an even keel" Capricorn is determined and ambitious, but it can also be aloof and status-conscious. It is the farsighted business leader who builds structures that will sustain the existing social fabric and provide support and the necessities of life for new generations.

Cancer is sensitive and compassionate, but it can also be moody and fretful. It is the protective parent who builds traditions and the "home base" people can use as their foundations for safety and future growth. Scorpio is passionate and powerful, but it can also be secretive and willful. It is the refiner, the renovator who takes what exists and improves it in ways that can seem downright miraculous when the work is complete. Pisces is intuitive and tolerant, but it can also be gullible and too forgiving. It is the mystic, the spiritual idealist who sees beyond the limitations of the present and finds "meaning" that can be inspirational and uplifting when those gifts are desperately needed.

Linda Goodman's Sun Signs
By
Linda Goodman
The three Fire signs -- Aries, Leo and Sagittarius -- and the three Air signs -- Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are considered masculine. Masculine signs are self-sufficient, notably aggressive and forceful. They take action to get what they want, through competition and efforts to change or create the conditions / assets / situations they desire. If you have planets in masculine signs in your horoscope, you will use the qualities of those signs outwardly and insistently to satisfy the life agendas represented by each of those planets. There is extra push and drive in the way you meet and work with those elements of your life.

Where you have masculine signs on the house cusps of your chart, you will take the initiative and do things directly to satisfy the interests of those houses. (Clearly men have more social permission than women to act this way in general. Competitive men are called "good leaders" and "go-getters." Competitive women are called "pushy" ... and worse.) If you have more planets in masculine signs than feminine signs, these outward, self-propelling qualities are more apt to define your character ... and you may either benefit, or encounter problems, as a result.

Aries is self-starting and confident, but it can also be confrontational and impatient. It is the initiator, the pioneer ... charged with launching new endeavors. Leo is managerial and proud, but it can also be vain and self-aggrandizing. It is the charismatic leader ... the inspirational personality that can build group loyalty and cohesion. Sagittarius is philosophical and eclectic in its moral and cultural involvements, but it can also be self-righteous and hypocritical. It is the inspiring teacher ... the conscientious academic who brings a moral center to life.

Gemini is versatile and curious, but it can also be scattered and high-strung. It is the intellectual, the skilled communicator who gathers facts, works with information, "learns stuff" and shares ideas. Libra is diplomatic and cooperative, but it can also be manipulative and obsessed with harmonious appearances. It is the cooperative partner, the diplomat whose skills in managing relationships finds the right mix of competition and compromise that lets everyone work productively together and helps a multitude of interests get along. Aquarius is independent and objective, but it can also be erratic and emotionally remote. It is the scientific observer ... the visionary whose ideals and imagination prepare the world to meet the challenges of the future.

The Astrologer's Handbook
By
Frances Sakoian
The most basic way of organizing the signs of the Zodiac into categories you can compare and contrast (and thus look for similarities and differences among them) is through the simple division into masculine and feminine groups. Sometimes when I mention this, at least one person listening will get upset over the "political correctness" of these labels, because of the characteristics assigned to each group. But these are common divisions in occult studies and elsewhere, including biology.

Male and female categories are a simple fact of life They are inherently different from one another, and so are the qualities associated with them. Even in electronics, technicians speak of male plugs and female receptors ... and somehow the discussion doesn't get bogged down in debate over whether women can have and express traditionally male qualities and vice versa. Of course they can. Women can be strong, assertive and outwardly directed. Men have their quiet, reflective, tender side. So, let's agree to call certain traits masculine, and others feminine ... and get over the silly problems that come with this.

Starting with Aries, The Great Initiator and ending with Pisces, The Great Contemplative, the progression of the Zodiac signs alternate their masculine and feminine labels. The odd numbered signs are masculine; the even numbered signs, feminine. Thus the Fire and Air signs -- Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius -- are considered the masculine signs and the Earth and Water signs -- Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces -- are the feminine signs. They could just as easily be labeled extroverted / introspective ... assertive / receptive ... active / passive ... yang / yin. Those categories work, too.

Fire signs and Air signs are indeed considered confident, extroverted, dynamic and active. The traits and interests of Fire signs and Air signs are considered either compatible or complementary with one another. On the other hand, the Earth signs and Water signs are considered pensive, introverted, responsive and passive. The traits and interests of the Earth signs and Water signs are considered either compatible or complementary with one another. Most "compatibility astrology" operates on little more than this basic assumption. (Proof you really can simplify a basic rule down into total nonsense!!)

Astrology for Self-Empowerment: Techniques for Reclaiming Your Sacred Power
By
Dovid Strusiner
The Ascendant is also called the "Rising Sign" of a person's chart. Astrologers use the two terms interchangeably. It is literally the sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon of the sky at the time you were born in the place where you were born. This is why it is essential to have both a birthplace and a birth time in order to cast a completely valid Natal Chart.

All twelve signs of the Zodiac rotate across the sky in the course of a day. Therefore the sign that is ascending -- literally "rising" -- on the eastern horizon changes every two hours. And your Rising Sign ... or Ascendant Sign ... depends on the exact time you were born!

Only if you were born within two hours one way or the other of sunrise will your Ascendant Sign be the same as your Sun Sign ... and it is completely independent of your Moon sign. Yet this third key component of your personality, will usually give the most valid information about who you appear to be to other people and how you take on the world!!

Your Ascendant sign describes your temperament, your outward mannerisms and behavior, the personality you put "on public display." It is the part of yourself you are most willing for other people to see in casual, impersonal situations. Changes here will explain why even people born on the same day as you ... will have very different personalities, different strengths and interests, and different life experiences.

Forecasts based on your Ascendant sign are likely to be immediately recognizable in describing the events and focus of your life and immediate future. These contain perhaps the most important and valid information you can receive from a "general" astrology reading ... about what explicitly is happening in your life. In this way, your Ascendant sign information is even more crucial, important ... and applicable than your Sun sign information.

But there is no way to tell you your Ascendant sign information without a birth time ... and place. Sorry. There just isn't.

All Around the Zodiac: Exploring Astrology's Twelve Signs
By
Bil Tierney
Here's what I would call a piece of basic science -- a basic working principle -- in Astrology. Each of the Zodiac signs represents certain unique and identifiable character traits associated with people born with planetary placements in those signs. Some of these qualities are positive, constructive and highly desirable. Others are not. In fact, some of these same positive traits under stress and pressure -- either from within the personality or temporarily present in the outside world -- become negative, destructive and highly problematic.

In the finicky political correctness of our times, it's not "proper" to call a trait (or an experience either!!) "negative." We're supposed to say it's "challenging" or "difficult" or "needs careful attention." I say ... "Whatever ..." It's a fact that a rose by any other name is still a rose. And a crappy personality trait is still a problem ... definitely a negative experience -- for both the person who owns the conflicting energies and those who have to put up with him at work, at home, in the world.

The energy of the Leo Sun is beyond question the most self-centered, self-involved, and dramatically flamboyant in the Zodiac. It wants to be noticed, applauded, and admired. It is notoriously willing to do anything for attention. The Aquarius Moon, on the other hand, draws its fuel from the highly independent and altruistic character that is the humanitarian of the Zodiac ....
