The Twelve Houses
By
Howard Sasportas
Just as there are twelve signs in the Zodiac, there are twelve houses in a horoscope. The houses of the horoscope divide the circle into segments. Each segment represents an area of life -- or a stage upon which the issues and concerns of life in this material world will unfold.
Between them, the houses of the horoscope contain all the elements of life a person is normally required to handle -- everything from matters as solid and material as money to the extremely abstract concerns of self-understanding and a sense of meaning for what he is experiencing.
Each house of the horoscope has a sign of the Zodiac it is fundamentally related to ... whose concerns are obviously and directly associated with one another. The sequence of meanings associated with each house, in fact, follow the order of the Zodiac itself.

Linda Goodman's Sun Signs
By
Linda Goodman
Each planet in a chart is located in a sign -- the sign of the Zodiac it was traveling through when the birth occurred, or the event happened ... the moment in time for which the chart was cast. Signs tell the characteristics that describe how the energy of the planet will operate. The energy of a planet in Aries will be self-assertive and forceful. One in Aquarius will be independent and unpredictable. One in Cancer will be sensitive, somewhat passive and operate largely on feelings and emotions.
Because Astrology is mostly a mix-and-match discipline of decoding the metaphors, describing what a planet in a sign in a house and by aspect all mean when working together, you can take just the two elements of a planet in a sign and start building plain English ideas of what these will show in the traits and behaviors of someone who owns them.

The Astrologer's Handbook
By
Frances Sakoian
With all the talk of planets, signs, houses and aspects, Astrology can sound much more confusing and intimidating to a novice than it really is. Astrology is essentially a code ... and you read a chart for an event or a person's birth (and thus his character, etc.) by knowing and deciphering the code. There are admittedly elements of Astrology that are complex and difficult -- sometimes needlessly so, in my opinion. But the essential, generic meanings of the planets, signs, houses and aspects are pretty simple.

Astrology -- The Cosmic Science
That Keeps on Keeping On
Like a good many things subject to flexible interpretation rather than something that can be measured by quantifiable, scientific, black-and-white standards, Astrology as a serious topic of study ... or even something to bring up in a friendly conversation ... falls in and out of favor.

Origins of an Idea
Horoscope ... "The Watcher of the Hour"
The roots of Western astrology -- the occult discipline many know at least casually, and many practice with dedication -- reach far back in time to origins in ancient Mesopotamia. The early practice of what has become Astrology was mostly a study of celestial signs, omens seen in the positions of the stars ... but the conclusions (and predictions such as they were) gained from this was applied almost exclusively to the future and fate of society -- the fortunes of the group.

Different Strokes for Different Folks
True Then ... True Now
"Different strokes for different folks" became a cliché catch-phrase back in the late '60's and '70's. Yes, there was a kernel of truth in it ... and maybe it was supposed to be tolerant and light-hearted. But for some reason it always rubbed me wrong, as if the often serious differences between people (and there were a bunch of painful examples in those days) could be solved with a silly sentence, tossed off by someone as he headed off in another direction.

It's Elementary
The personalities of the Fire Signs -- Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius -- are indeed like the nature of fire itself. Dramatic, heated, passionate. Intense, active, vital, full of energy ... and quick-moving. Always on the go.

All Around the Zodiac: Exploring Astrology's Twelve Signs
By
Bil Tierney
Here's what I would call a piece of basic science -- a basic working principle -- in Astrology. Each of the Zodiac signs represents certain unique and identifiable character traits associated with people born with planetary placements in those signs. Some of these qualities are positive, constructive and highly desirable. Others are not. In fact, some of these same positive traits under stress and pressure -- either from within the personality or temporarily present in the outside world -- become negative, destructive and highly problematic.
In the finicky political correctness of our times, it's not "proper" to call a trait (or an experience either!!) "negative." We're supposed to say it's "challenging" or "difficult" or "needs careful attention." I say ... "Whatever ..." It's a fact that a rose by any other name is still a rose. And a crappy personality trait is still a problem ... definitely a negative experience -- for both the person who owns the conflicting energies and those who have to put up with him at work, at home, in the world.

The Elements in Astrology
Each of us contains them all ... but why?
The elements in Astrology are the familiar elements of the physical world: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. In Astrology, these divisions of the Zodiac describe character temperament, but more subtly, they represent four different ways of viewing life and responding to it. Division of the Zodiac signs by element ... putting three signs in each of the four categories ... gives interesting and important information about how each cluster interprets (and reacts!!) to its environment.. Each element provides a starting point, an automatic, habitual position on life. Each elemental reference becomes the lens through which the signs that belong to it make choices, define awareness and assess reality.

Why Don't the Zodiac Signs Line Up
With the Regular Calendar Dates?
This is a very interesting question ... one you may have wondered about quickly yourself from time to time. I know I certainly did before I became an Astrologer and learned some of the reasons behind this strange discrepancy.
The reason is complicated, multi-faceted ... and you may be sorry you asked before the answer comes out in any form you can understand, if you're not into geometry, astronomy or some of the other physical sciences and mathematical studies most of us didn't care for all that much in school.

So what determines when the Sun enters Aries
and why isn't it the same day every year?
The vernal equinox -- the moment when Spring officially arrives -- "is defined in astronomy as that point in space where the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun, the ecliptic, intersects the plane of the Earth's equator extended into space." (From "The Astrologer's Handbook;" by Frances Sakoian and Lewis Acker.) This is where you need to construct that visual model in your imagination I mentioned earlier. Put the Sun in the center of the picture you're building in your mind and see the Earth rotating around it.
