A Spiritual Approach to Astrology
By
Myrna Lofthus
Today, Mars, newly arrived in Aries, comes square to Pluto, finally in Capricorn to stay a while. The last time this combination strolled onstage was in the 1760s and 70s. Yes, the years of growing discontent in the American colonies that finally erupted in the Revolutionary war. In fact the most recent time Mars in Aries squared Pluto in Capricorn was around the 20th of April, 1776 -- literally within shouting distance of July 4 and the birth of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson formally began writing that document in June.
So, with a new climate of political change and unrest frothing away in the innards of government now (and yes, again!!), it will be interesting to see what the hard aspects between these two foretell in the dozen-plus years of Pluto's saunter through Capricorn that lie ahead of us now.

Mythic Astrology: Archetypal Powers in the Horoscope
By
Ariel Guttman, Kenneth Johnson
Well, I suppose it's time to talk about the Saturn / Uranus opposition that went exact last Tuesday -- for the first time. We were, of course, working with the opening chords of this energy for several months in advance of the actual contact ... and since Saturn will retrograde -- and make this aspect again and again before moving on, we'll be treated to the full-symphony effect of it over the next couple of years. And, as with important moments in the past, we're going to talk about this over several issues of Step by Step ... because I've got a lot to say on the subject -- and one sitting just ain't enough.
My, oh, my. Saturn -- the metaphor for stability and permanence ... and Uranus -- the metaphor for revolution and radical change. Facing off across a no-man's-land where "compromise" between their demands is absolutely essential -- and yet is just a fleeting hope. Does that, or does that not give you chills? Both these planets are heavy-hitters when it comes to Karmic lessons -- and in this opposition aspect, they are not one bit happy with one another right now. So, it's important to understand what's happening, what it means, what to look for, and what it's trying to teach us.

Aspects in Astrology: A Guide to Understanding Planetary Relationships in the Horoscope
By
Sue Tompkins
Yes, people have been asking me about the election. And because using Astrology to "predict winners" is a minefield I'll try to explain a little bit here, I've side-stepped a lot of the questions. Also, my emphasis and interest in this craft is to use Astrology to better understand personality, and how I can use it to manage my choices and my life -- which has less to do with the fortunes of individuals on the world scene than you might imagine. When I segue into Astrology and current events, it's more a casual side trip for me than an excursion that really lights my fire.
However, I got this note over the week-end from someone who, for whatever reason, made me decide ... Ok, I'd better do something on this -- if only to show how I think Astrology can and maybe "should" be used against the backdrop of what is clearly a compelling, crucial time in national -- and maybe world --- events. So, here is the text of the email -- and my answer -- and what came of it this afternoon.

What the Heck Is Going on with the Stock Market?

Astrology of Fate
By
Liz Greene
Except that it involves so many people's safety and future ... and to some degree the stability of our global economy, the current gyrations of the Stock Market could seem almost humorous. It's certainly been a wild and crazy time -- as each day's newscast brings stories of complete reversals from the trends of the day before. One day it's high as a kite, the next day it's disastrously down. The spikes and dips on the daily trading tallies are amazing.
Cooler (and smarter) heads are telling everyone to stay calm. (Even Warren Buffet ... no slouch when it comes to economic savvy ... says now's the time to cherry-pick your options and when the price slides -- as it's doing literally every other day now ... buy stock! HE is. He just bought three billion dollars worth of stock in General Electric.) Nobody seems to be listening. And the roller-coaster ride continues -- as do the record highs and record lows, bringing the kind of peaks and valleys usually reserved for seismographs ... the instruments that measure earthquakes. Or polygraphs ... such as a number of folks involved in this mess ought to be strapped to.

If the New York Stock Exchange Were a Person
What Astrology Would Say About His Character
(This is by no means an exhaustive Natal Chart analysis of this horoscope. You don't want to read that, and I sure don't want to write it. Rather, this is more of a quick, thumb-nail sketch of the themes on blatant display in this chart -- written off the top of my head in no particular order, about what this chart contains, and what I see when I look at it.)
So, if you met this person on E-Harmony,
would you want to hook up with him?

The Assassination of Benazir Bhutto
Occasionally life presents me with headline making events that illustrate with eerie accuracy some of what I've been writing about in the day-in-day-out tracking of the celestial citizens in their movements -- the information served up several times a week in the issues of Step by Step. Saddam Hussein's chart clearly showed the grim path his life was taking as the days ticked off to his execution a year ago yesterday. I made a passing mention of this in one issue -- around the time his death sentence was passed.

Yes, Most Daily Horoscopes are Junk
You may know "astrology" through the pop-culture categories of dime-store booklets or through reading your daily horoscope in the newspaper. These are supposedly the descriptions of who you are and what's going to happen to you today based on some mysterious elements at work in the sky and little more than the luck of the draw you were handed on the day of the year you were born. Usually the dime-store booklets are simplistic but accurate as far as they go. Daily horoscopes in the newspaper, though, resemble real astrology about as much as Styrofoam resembles real food.

Lord Browne's Second Saturn Return
It's been a bad year for British Lords and Businessmen. Earlier this year Edmund John Philip Browne, Baron Browne of Madingley, aka Lord Browne, approached his second Saturn Return (payback time). As it sometimes does at Saturn Return, his life began to unravel. Within months his brilliant career was over, his reputation besmirched because of a homosexual scandal, and he may have lost a $3 billion retirement package as well.

Why Is Simon so Mean?
Simon has Saturn in Capricorn so he is very judgmental. He is every bit as judgmental of himself as he is of others. He thinks everyone holds themselves to the same ridiculously high Capricorn standards that he does. He's missing the wonderful world of fun, spontaneity and creativity. You often see this very stern look on his face when he is not flashing that gorgeous Libra smile.

Brother Tiger, Brother Bear
I thought this would be an animal story. Last week, on his 59th birthday, Roy Horn of Siegfried & Roy was mauled by his seven year old 600 lb. white tiger, Montecore, in front of a sellout crowd at the Mirage where the show has been playing since 1990.

The Perseids Meteor Shower
Meteors are bits of debris left behind by comets. The Perseid is from the Comet Swift-Tuttle, the largest object known to make repeated passes near the Earth. Its nucleus, about 6 miles across, is "roughly equal to the object that wiped out dinosaurs." (http://www.space.com).
