There are two other remarkable things about the accident charts that are easily apparent ... the placement of Uranus, which in each case disposits the components of the Aquarius stellium -- each of which includes the Sun, making Uranus the de facto ruling planet in each chart.

(Translation: the position of Uranus has influence and a kind of underlying "authority" over the function of the planets contained in Aquarius, since Uranus itself rules Aquarius. The Sun is, naturally, the essential identifying placement in any chart, the "core identity," if you will. If Uranus rules the sign of the Sun, as it always will in the time of Aquarius, its erratic and volatile meanings can have unusual prominence in what happens.)

Uranus, which as I said, rules aviation, space travel, features that include extraordinary speed and mobility as part of their native qualities ... and accidents, sudden events, explosions, and unusual occurrences, is placed in the Challenger chart in the 8th House of death, transition, and permanent change.

In the Columbia chart, it sits smack on the chart Ascendant -- the "public face," the immediate presentation, of the incident. (Wherever Uranus is found in any chart, "the unexpected" can occur, sudden and explosive events constantly mark that area of life, and "freedom" is almost an obsessive issue.) Uranus on the Ascendant and Uranus associated with 8th House matters are often indicated in sudden, explosive, unexpected conditions involving death and "permanent change."

There is one last thing the unsophisticated eye can note about these two charts ... the prominence and placement of the Moon's Nodes. (The glyphs for the Moon's Nodes are the two little circles connected by a loop that looks like the "eye" part of a hook-and-eye set. There are always two of them, positioned directly across from one another in the chart.)

The Moon's Nodes carry special weight in Karmic Astrology and are often unusually emphasized by placement and aspects in charts which are notable in a "fated" sense ... indicating the possibility of Karmic factors at work in the unfolding events depicted there.

The North Node (the glyph where the circles are on the bottom of the figure) indicates a point of Karmic blessing, evidence of unselfish generosity, and a point of "cosmic gift-giving" between the chart native (the person / event described in the chart) and The Divine Source. The South Node (the glyph where the circles are at the top of the figure) indicates a point of Karmic obligation, evidence of commitment and responsibility, a "Karmic mission" -- often involving outward loss and sacrifice -- between the chart native and The Divine Source.

In the Challenger chart, the Moon's Nodes sit right on the Ascendant / Descendant axis. In the Columbia chart, the Moon's Nodes sit right along the MC / IC axis. To an Astrologer, both these charts indicate strong and substantial Karmic factors at play in what happened in these events -- certainly enough to bring these charts (and their events) strongly to public attention -- and to the attention of any competent astrologer examining the metaphors shown here.

In the Challenger chart, the South Node has just passed over the Descendant and Pluto -- the chart point of "one's effect on other people," and the planetary metaphor for death and "total destruction." Pluto is also highly afflicted in this chart, being square to three of the components in the Aquarius stellium (a cluster of three or more planets) in the 10th House of public renown and reputation. Pluto afflicted is merciless, unrelenting, vicious, and even carries "criminal" overtones, an energy that behaves as a law unto itself, and which assumes the ends justify the means. Pluto also carries serious Karmic weight with astrologers in the events where it is prominent.

In the Columbia chart, the South Node has just passed over Mars and the MC -- the chart point of public reputation, community status, career issues, and ones "standing" in the world, and the planetary metaphor for aggression, fire, energetic movement, and pushing assertively to achieve one's goal.

In this chart, too, Pluto is afflicted by an opposition to Saturn from the 10th House to the 4th House ... an aspect that suggests severe conflict between one's career ambitions and one's responsibilities to home and family. Pluto afflicted in 10th House depicts a sudden and complete change in status ... while Saturn afflicted in 4th House depicts the loss of one's foundations, especially one's family foundations. This can also indicate the incursion of future Karmic business involving "home and family" ... and those in one's family being handed "serious Karmic responsibilities."
