Sadly, America's Space Shuttle Program now has two tragedies in its history, two catastrophic failures of the machinery involved in this extraordinarily ambitious endeavor ... with the loss of all on board.

At approximately 7 in the morning, Mountain Time, on Saturday, February 1, the space shuttle Columbia exploded on re-entry over central Texas. Seventeen years ago almost to the day, on January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded less than a minute and a half after leaving the launch pad.

When the initial shock of the news wears off, the astrologer in me turns to the computer to look at the charts of those fateful moments, frozen in time.

I want to emphasize in the strongest possible terms that "the stars" in no way cause the events that occur in the world. Rather their positions, for a student of astrology, will reflect and describe what is going on at a particular moment. In the same way, a photograph doesn't cause an event, but records and describes the visual evidence of what happened, what existed, what was available that we can study and learn from.

A comparison of the two accident charts shows a couple of interesting similarities for an astrologer to note. The first and most striking visual feature in both charts, even to the untrained eye, is the cluster of placements in Aquarius. In mundane astrology (the astrology of world events), Aquarius is the astrology sign that rules, among other things, aviation, space travel, exploration, and "adventure."

Aquarius and the people born under Aquarius are notable to astrologers for their bold ingenuity, their altruistic idealism, their willingness to venture into the unknown, their love of science and experimentation, their originality, their interest in "the future," their unconventional ways of finding new knowledge, and their remarkable insights -- often marked by an "AHA!" experience, arriving in a quick instant of complete insight and comprehension.

Again, in mundane astrology (the astrology of world events), Aquarius is associated with "the unexpected," the unpredictable, with accidents, with sudden and explosive happenings, and with "freak occurrences" ... anomalies that are far from "routine."

(Once again, I emphasize that there were planes in the air on both days, at both these moments for which I have cast the charts that describe the shuttle accidents, that didn't explode, that reached their destinations safely ... and cars on the road that did the same, taking their passengers where they intended to go without detour or catastrophic mishap.)

But clearly the issues and possibilities I've listed above are prominent in the "climate" that surrounded both these events.
