GENERAL TERMS
THE ZODIAC
The Zodiac is an imaginary belt in the heavens approximately 20 degrees wide, containing the path of the Sun the Moon and that of the principle Planets in this Solar System with the occasional exception of Pluto. It is divided into Twelve equal parts or signs, of 30 degrees each across its circumference. Each sign is named for a different constellation found therein ... and these comprise the list of astrological signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
HOROSCOPE
Sometimes this word is used to designate the forecast or prediction of events based on the alignment of planets in the sky at any given time. As such, it has been seriously abused and twisted by the popularized (and usually meaningless and sappy) "fortune-cookie" versions that appear in newspaper features and other products we all know so well.
A horoscope to an astrologer, however, is a map of the sky ... charted in a circular diagram ... of where the different planets were located and their relationship to each other at a specific time of interest -- such as the moment of birth of a person, event, or other "entity."
This is what it looks like:

THE ASCENDANT
The Ascendant is also called the "Rising Sign" of a person's chart. Astrologers use the two terms interchangeably. It is literally the sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon of the sky at the time you were born in the place where you were born. This is why it is essential to have both a birthplace and a birth time in order to cast a completely valid Natal Chart.
All twelve signs of the Zodiac rotate across the sky in the course of a day. Therefore the sign that is ascending … literally "rising" … on the eastern horizon changes every two hours. And your Rising Sign ... or Ascendant Sign ... depends on the exact time you were born!
Your Ascendant sign describes your temperament, your outward mannerisms and behavior, the personality you put "on public display." It is the part of yourself you are most willing for other people to see in casual, impersonal situations. Changes here will explain why even people born on the same day as you ... will have very different personalities, different strengths and interests, and different life experiences.
Forecasts based on your Ascendant sign are likely to be immediately recognizable in describing the events and focus of your life and immediate future. These contain perhaps the most important and valid information you can receive from a "general" astrology reading ... about what explicitly is happening in your life. In this way, your Ascendant sign information is even more crucial, important ... and applicable than your Sun sign information
HOUSE
Physically, the horoscope chart is a circle divided into twelve segments, one for each sign of the Zodiac. As a circle contains 360°, each segment allotted to a sign contains 30° (from 0° through 29°). Each of the twelve segments is also called a "house" ... and each house deals with a specific area of a person's life.
RETROGRADE MOTION
(Abbreviated Rx)
All the major planets used by astrologers to decode the spiritual language of the cosmos exhibit a phenomenon known as "going retrograde" -- or "being in retrograde motion." In very simple terms, there are times from the perspective of Earth when each of the planets seems to back up in its orbit, to actually reverse course for a time, before eventually going forward again. This is caused by the differing orbits and the differing speeds of the elements involved.
Physically, of course, this is impossible. It's actually an optical illusion. As an imperfect illustration of what I mean, imagine you are on a train passing a second, slower-moving train going in the same direction. From your vantage point, the second train looks like it is going backwards. But it's not.
Metaphorically, and as a practical matter, this represents a time of doing something over - perhaps multiple times - as described by the energy and concerns of whatever planet is in retrograde.
Periods of retrograde motion can be very productive on an objective level, but they can also feel frustrating and stagnant, because metaphorically, the forward motion of the planetary and its energies have been stalled and you are having to backtrack and redo things you thought were already completed and in place - but now find are inadequate for your present needs or are wrongly focused and thus need to be restructured and realigned.
For greater detail on this subject, please see the entire article Planets in Retrograde - an Explanation as well as the extensive explanations of specific planets in retrograde here on the site.

THE PLANETS
THE SUN
One of the three major personal placements in an individual's horoscope, along with The Moon and the Ascendant, and arguably the most important. As with all the planetary energies, the Sun will occupy one of the twelve signs of the Zodiac at any given moment. The sign where the Sun is found at the time a person is born determines, obviously, his Sun Sign - and this is what it means when we say a person is an Aries, or he is a Scorpio - that the Sun was found in Aries or in Scorpio respectively at the moment he was born.
To an astrologer, the Sun's position describes the qualities of your basic ego, your individual self-expression, your personal identity. The metaphor of the Sun, therefore represents your core personality, your essential self, your ego, your sense of personal identity, your inherent focus, your overtly expressed urge to manifest your destiny or importance in life.
THE MOON
One of the three major personal placements in an individual's horoscope, along with the Sun and the Ascendant. Traditionally it is considered the second most important placement, but in practice, I don't find this to be a hard-and-fast rule. Some people will show their Moon Sign energy more overtly than their Sun Sign energy. The Moon changes signs approximately every 2 and a half days - raveling through all twelve signs of the Zodiac in the course of a month.
The energy of the Moon Sign will most definitely color the basic personality type of a Sun Sign ... making this one of the many, but more significant, reasons why personalities can vary so much within each Sun Sign category. In other words, obviously, not all Leos or Capricorns are alike - and the different combinations of Sun Sign and Moon Sign energy are a significant part of the astrological reasons why this is true.
The Moon represents the emotional self, the inner self, your instincts, habits, automatic reactions and your sense of personal heritage and history. Most people feel their Moon Sign energy very strongly - some even to the point of identifying with their Moon Sign (once they know what it is - and without having their horoscope chart done, there is really no way to know for sure) more than with their Sun Sign. This is a very valid feeling, in fact, for the Moon represents who a person is on the inside ... and this is where most people feel they are most strongly their real selves.
MERCURY
Represents your mental and communications skills, the intellectual components of your personality, the part of your personality that deals with physical movement, informational exchange, discrimination, learning, and analysis.
VENUS
Represents your social self, your need and capacity to form relationships, the responsive side of your romantic soul -- and, therefore, it describes the kind of love you both offer and want to receive. It is "what love means to you."
It also represents the part of your personality that deals with the material world, the world of the senses, and thus represents your aesthetic sensibilities, your "taste" in the sensory pleasures in life, your connections to culture and art, and your involvement with all physical resources including money and possessions.
In the broadest sense of the term, Venus deals with "values" ... abstract, tangible, personal, emotional, financial, sensual, social. In other words, Venus is involved with your earthy, temporal, mundane values -- as shown by the way you acquire, manipulate, respond to and spend material resources, and the values you apply and look for in the partners you acquire.
MARS
Represents your ability to take assertive action; your capacity for aggression; your outward sexual expression -- the way you set out to "win" a partner and express your love in physical ways; your use of energy, force and willpower to achieve your ambitions and desires; your ability to be direct and independent; your competitive spirit.
JUPITER
Represents your philosophical and ethical structures; your ability to claim and express your authoritative knowledge - often through teaching others by the example of your own life; your ability to expand your sphere of personal influence; your involvement with law and religion - and the basic rules you live by; your ability to share benevolently with others - thus your capacity for making charitable contributions of both money and energy to promote the overall social progress you favor; your ability to envision the big picture of life and commit yourself to expansive undertakings; your involvement with positive karma and the benefits you derive therefrom.
SATURN
Represents your sense of practical ambition; your need for status; your concern for your public reputation; your desire for wide recognition; your sense of responsibility; your involvement with career development and issues; your ability for self-discipline and focus; your ability to concentrate; your response to perceptions of lack, limitation, vulnerability and frustration; and your capacity for hard work aimed at long term goals.
The work you accomplish using Saturn's energy and direction is exacting, extensive, and often burdensome and laborious. This energy contains your sense of obligation ... and all the things you feel or believe you have to do in order to be loved, safe, worthwhile, respected, or able to survive. Saturn is considered a strong indicator of the karmic responsibilities and obligations you have assumed, voluntarily or otherwise, the karmic debts you have acquired and the karmic tasks you have agreed to tackle and perform.
URANUS
Represents your urge to be free from rigid patterns, limitations, and structure ; your sense of rebellion; your capacity for innovation, originality and inventiveness; your capacity for independence and eccentricity; your capacity for handling sudden changes, upsets, disruptions, accidents and "the unexpected"; your ability to be unconventional and unique ; your capacity to deal with what is unusual, progressive, and modern; your capacity to deal with intuitive insights that come in sudden flashes; your ability to be ingenious, unorthodox, scientific, unemotional; your sense of altruism; your visionary plans for the future, and your ways of handling and participating in friendships.
This planet's symbolism also carries karmic freight -- as the indication of what you and your immediate group of peers are implementing in accordance with your vision to improve the social order in which you life ... and what you are adding as contributions from which the rest of society can benefit.
NEPTUNE
Represents your ability to act with inspiration, idealism and faith; your capacity for psychic insights; your deep subconscious emotions and motivations; your capacity for compassion; your connection to mystical, religious, and spiritual interests -- including first-hand experience with these matters and your personal spiritual karma; your involvement with deep creative and artistic impulses; your sense of self-sacrifice, and your involvement with altered states of consciousness through contemplation, isolation, retreat, meditation, and prayer.
This symbol's complex, abstruse, and often mysterious energy further contains your connection to the ultimate Divine
Source of creative power, your involvement with what is inspirational both within and outside of you; your imagination and power to visualize; your capacity for unconditional spiritual love; and your interest in establishing something "ideal" as your contribution to the future.
There is, however, an undeniably frightening and dark side to its expression ... including your involvement with fraud, confusion, illusion, deception, and self-deception; your sense of self-sacrifice, self-sabotage, and self-destruction; your involvement with thinking disorders, insanity, dissociative and ecstatic states, emotional and mental illness; the existence of "blind spots" in your character -- often from excessive idealism or denial; your tendencies toward helplessness and "imprisonment" -- through self-defeating attitudes; and your capacity for being unrealistic and self-deluded -- and thus deceived by others.
PLUTO
Represents your capacity for regeneration, rebirth, renewal, and rebuilding; your use of sexual expression as a creative force; your ability to deal with life and death matters; your involvement with revolution, upheaval, and total change; your ability to cope with crises and emergencies; your ability to instigate profound self-improvement; your involvement with massive destruction and reconstruction -- tearing out what exists or coping with complete disaster ... and starting over from scratch; your ability to improve what exists in far-reaching and permanent ways; and the interaction between your personal karma and issues of mass karma -- often experienced in the form of social change.
This is perhaps the most fearsome of the karmic planetary symbols. At its most benign it deals with it denotes your involvement with occult interests, mysteries, investigations, secret knowledge, research, and the uncovering of hidden information. It also symbolizes your ability to help others make the most of their individual talents and resources; your ability to forge alliances and "communal assets" out of your talents, visions, assets -- and those of others.
But in its darker manifestations, it indicates your capacity to be ruthless and destructive -- or victimized by this in someone else, your capacity for extreme, depraved, passionate, and even criminal behavior; your involvement in willful violence; and your willingness to act with total disregard for the safety, fate, welfare, or even the survival of yourself and others.
This is the final planetary symbol in the present astrological roster. There are at least two more planets yet to be discovered, defined, and formally added to the list -- one inside the orbit of Mercury (tentatively named Apollo) and one beyond the orbit of Pluto (tentatively named Bacchus or Trans-Pluto).

THE ASPECTS
Aspects are the angles planets make between themselves which allow an astrologer to see -- and describe -- the way the energies they represent interact with one another in a horoscope, and thus in the character or evolution of the person or event being studied. There are, predictably, easy or "soft" aspects, in which the energies are supportive, helpful, and compatible with one another.
There are also harsh or "hard" aspects, in which the energies are dissonant, conflicted, and frustrating to one another.
The aspects between the moving planets in the sky at any given time and the static planet placements in the horoscope one is studying are especially important in forecasting what is happening to the person, entity, or event in the chart, what it means, what it is trying to accomplish, how it will manifest, and how long it will last!
MAJOR ASPECTS
CONJUNCTION
Theoretically, a conjunction occurs when two or more planets occupy exactly the same degree and minute of arc in a sign - as part of the circle of the Zodiac. As a practical matter, there is about 8 to 10 degrees of latitude in the definition of a conjunction. (In other words, planets less than 8 to 10 degrees apart in a sign are still considered to be conjunct with one another.) Metaphorically, this represents a uniting, blending and combining of the different energies involved.
In Astrology, two planets that are in conjunction influence each other's expression to a tremendous extent. They operate like Siamese twins - the action of each impacting and affecting the other in an inescapable, inevitable way. Each planet involved in the conjunction will assume the colorings, qualities, and characteristics of its partner so that the unit is literally inseparable -- in the same way the color green contains the elements of both yellow and blue, but is still markedly different from either one of those original components.
A conjunction thus represents a strong, unbreakable alliance between the characteristics, assets, and methods of the two or more planetary placements. Because the planets operate in this united fashion - the personality matters and life concerns designated and governed by one cannot be considered without taking all the personality matters and life concerns designated and governed by the other(s) into account at the same time.
SEXTILE
A sextile is an angle between two planets of approximately 60 degrees + / - 8 degrees. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a benevolent, advantageous relationship to one another, each offering the other opportunities to work together for mutually favorable expression. A sextile indicates that the personal qualities each planet represents support one another harmoniously in the character of the person whose chart contains them.
A person with the Sun sextile to the Moon, for example, has an essential personality that works well with his feelings and instincts. He will, as a rule, be even-tempered, comfortable with his emotions and able to express feelings that help demonstrate to others who he really is.
A person with the Sun sextile to Mars, on the other hand, has an essential personality that works well with his ability to take assertive action. He will, as a rule, easily take decisive and appropriate action to achieve his goals, actions that are very demonstrative and revealing of who he really is.
A person with the Moon sextile to Mars, to show the subtle difference then, is a person whose feelings and instincts work well with his ability to take assertive action. This latter person is one who will act reliably on gut feelings and hunches and who has an obvious knack for doing the right thing at the right moment.
SQUARE
A square is an angle between two planets of approximately 90 degrees + / - 8 to 10 degrees ... such that the planets are at roughly right angles to one another in the circle of the horoscope chart. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a difficult and challenging position, each seeming to block, impede, frustrate and hinder the complete or positive expression of the other.
The energies (or the symbolic inner selves) such planets represent seem to push and aggravate each other, rather like two actual people who, because of their different values, needs and personal chemistry just "don't get along." In my experience, squares often seem to represent "imposed expectations," as I will try to illustrate in a moment.
There are actually two types of squares, although this is not well acknowledged in many texts, nor does it mean anything except to an actual astrologer ... but the working dynamics of each will manifest somewhat differently in a person's character. In one type, the "problem" seems to originate in an individual's family history, background, habits and in the often counterproductive beliefs he holds about himself and his life. In the other type, the "problem" seems to originate in what a person feels he must do to exert himself publicly, to fulfill his career or professional requirements, to support his public reputation, and in the often counterproductive beliefs he holds about what "society" imposes on him.
For example: A person with his Sun square to Mars in the first instance, often comes from a family situation or background where there is a chronic sense of struggle, conflict, in-fighting, and activity "performed under pressure." This makes it hard for him to just "relax and be himself" ... and, therefore, he will tend to overcompensate for both the energies involved by being vain and grandiose on the one hand, and touchy and combative on the other (because he has to exert himself vigorously as a rule in order to defend himself and establish his boundaries even in "familiar" situations. Maybe especially there.)
A person with his Sun square to Mars in the second instance, often feels driven and pressured to make a name for himself in his career and public life by an ambition so powerful and contentious that almost "anything goes" in terms of fulfilling that need. Again, this compulsive energy will corrupt his free expression of who he really is because he will "come on too strong" in his tactics for acquiring the honor and prestige he craves. He will provoke situations where he gets into unnecessary (and perhaps quite dramatic) struggles and scraps in order to properly "establish" himself. And so, while he may also be self-centered, arrogant, aggressive and defiant ... the reasons why are different than in the first example, as are the goals he's trying to achieve.
The energies expressed by planets in square to one another are often compulsive, too forceful, and often rooted in feelings of resentment or vulnerability. Obviously, these circumstances tend to bring out the less pleasant qualities of the energies involved. The energies represented by planets in square aspect can be very dynamic and productive - rather like an athlete who can objectively accomplish more because in training he must constantly work with a handicap ... like running uphill, but they are not comfortable - either for the person who owns them, or for the people who have to deal with him.
TRINE
A trine is an angle between two planets of approximately 120 degrees + / - 8 degrees. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a benevolent, advantageous relationship to one another, each offering the other outlets for mutually favorable expression - qualities that amount to genuine natural talents in the character of the person whose chart contains the trine.
A person with the Sun trine to the Moon, for example, has an essential personality that is able to take remarkably powerful advantage of his feelings and instincts, often through some obvious creative or artistic ability - and whose emotional inner nature utilizes the abilities of a spiritually evolved essential personality to reveal itself to others, often in some formal or informal teaching capacity.
A person with the Sun trine to Mars, on the other hand, has an essential personality that routinely and easily takes creative action to achieve his goals and objectives. He will, as a rule, have very inventive and highly individual ways of getting what he wants and otherwise acting, consciously or unconsciously, as a good example for others to follow.
A person with the Moon trine to Mars, to show the subtle difference then, has an inner emotional nature that easily and automatically supports his ability to take action to achieve his heartfelt desires. This latter person has the ability to outwardly express his inner self - often through art, literature or drama. He will show an unusual capacity to act with compassion and empathy and to create supportive, nurturing situations for both himself and others - in ways that express an intuitive psychic knowledge of what is needed in given circumstances and how to achieve the desired results.
OPPOSITION
An opposition is an angle between two planets of approximately 180 degrees + / - 8 to 10 degrees ... such that the planets literally oppose one another across the circle of the horoscope chart. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a difficult and challenging relationship to one another, each seeming to require one's full attention and compliance ... often creating a feeling of having to serve two Masters at once.
A person experiencing oppositions in his chart is almost always dealing with relationship issues ... as one of the planets will represent disowned energy that other people are bringing into his life. Oppositions require you to take other people into account as a way of trying to integrate your own energies ... and yet the feeling that someone else is doing this to you is usually strong and inescapable. Working out the compromise that an opposition requires is always very challenging, requiring tremendous empathy, insight and the ability to keep potentially incompatible circumstances in very delicate balance.
The energies involved in an opposition are frequently experienced as very unpleasant and problematic and it is extremely easy to slip into the negative expressions of the personal qualities the planetary metaphors represent.
A person with the Sun in opposition to the Moon, for example, is literally a person divided against himself. Metaphorically, he has disowned his feeling, emotional nature ... and split that part of himself away so that he now has to experience it through the mirror of his relationships. He will, therefore, magnetize and attract into his life relationships with people who are overly involved with their feeling, emotional natures - and therefore the person has to put up with other people's emotions and emotional reactions ... as a way of trying to reintegrate and understand his own.
As a practical matter, such a person finds himself in relationships with people who seem chronically whine-y, moody, self-pitying, passive, compulsive, fretful, anxious, high-strung, dependent, insecure, touchy and often paranoid and hysterical. The person himself will frequently demonstrate these same qualities while not realizing it and while not admitting this, even to himself. In relationships, he is therefore likely to overly identify with and emphasize his Sun energy ... appearing to those other people who have to deal with him as being arrogant, self-involved, unsympathetic, dictatorial, pretentious, vain and overbearing.
You can certainly see how this arrangement would cause chronic problems. Oppositions, as I said, can be extremely uncomfortable ... until each party involved learns how to better integrate and emphasize the true nature of the energies involved and find a bit more sympathy for one another's circumstances, difficulties and ways of operating.
INTERMEDIATE ASPECTS
*Note: These next two aspects complete the options of possible angles in 30 degree increments around the circle of the horoscope. Most traditional Astrology texts treat these as "minor aspects." They are, however, gaining greater respect among contemporary astrologers and writers -- perhaps because their functions and values are becoming better understood. This is especially true of the inconjunct aspect. Having three of these in my own chart, I have long believed its energy represents an influence that deserves more consideration and standing.
SEMI-SEXTILE
A semi-sextile, as the name itself implies, is an angle that is half a 60 degree sextile. In other words, an angle of 30 degrees + / - 4 to 6 degrees of arc. Because these angles do seem to be a little less noticeable in the practical world, my preference is to narrow the orb of influence in order to deal with them during their time of maximum potency. It's been my experience that anything more liberal often deals with energy that isn't obvious enough to make much sense -- or offer much knowledge or control to those dealing with this angle and its meaning.
Essentially a semi-sextile depicts an opportunity for growth one seems to generate almost automatically for himself ... in which the qualities and assets of one partner in this combination of planets can naturally benefit from the natural actions and concerns of the other. Often one planet will work to lay the foundation ... or do the planning ... which the second planet is then able to easily carry to completion. Or one planet will take the work of the other and turn it into practical, material results -- often allowing a financial return for these efforts. (Always a good thing!!)
Think of a pair of players on a sports team, for example, who routinely set up shots for each other to take, or arrange ways back and forth for one another to succeed -- and thus raise the score for the entire team through their individual partnership and the work they do, and you have the idea of how a semi-sextile operates in a chart.
A person with the Moon semi-sextile to the Sun is someone with a good "gut instinct" for planning, for automatically envisioning the results he wants and ways to achieve this, who instinctively protects his family circle and private life interests with his choices -- and who can use this wonderful support to generate income and work positively with money and physical assets in the outer world.
(I'm sorry, but this is just not a tiny talent to sneer at ... with the designation of "minor aspect" as some old-time astrological texts used to do. This is an important way of integrating your options and behaviors in order to operate effectively in the real world!!)
INCONJUNCT
An inconjunct is an aspect of 150 degrees between planet placements, again + / - 4 to 6 degrees. As with the semi-sextile, these angles do seem to be a little less noticeable in the practical world, as they often deal with inner adjustments the person may have to handle -- or the event may have to accommodate, but which aren't apt to be obvious to an observer.
Therefore, again, my preference is to narrow the orb of influence in order to deal with them during their time of maximum potency. It's been my experience that anything more liberal often deals with energy that isn't obvious enough, even to the owner of the chart, to make much sense -- or offer much knowledge or control to those dealing with this angle and its meaning.
Often a wider orb of influence here seems to describe a person whose fundamental belief system says "this is just the way life is" ... without really noticing that others don't have these same adjustments to cope with.
You'll notice I've used the word "adjustment" several times to describe the dynamics of an inconjunct. That really is its essence. An inconjunct will almost always involve planets that are in incompatible elements (air and earth, fire and earth, air and water, or fire and water) and which occupy houses in the chart that are not all that supportive of one another.
In the working energy of an inconjunct, the energy of one planet (or partner) is either adjusting in order to serve the interests of the other in ways that are inconvenient (rather than hard or frustrating -- and certainly rather than easy or automatic) or it has to offer its own assets and resources into a "common structure" that gives it benefits but also loses it some of its independence and sovereign control over its own energy and those results.
To get the feeling of the inconjunct ... think of the traditional stay-at-home wife and working husband style of marriage. The wife may adjust her housework, social life, personal pursuits, and daily routines in order to accommodate the husband's working schedule and times at home ... and the husband puts his paycheck into a joint account for them both to use to keep the household running. Alone, the wife would set different priorities for herself ... and her husband might spend his money differently. But together, they adjust in order for their partnership to benefit.
