There are four elements in Astrology -- fire, earth, air and water. These derive, obviously, from ingredients in the physical world and are standard components in the earth-based religions, such as Wicca, and in other metaphysical disciplines such as the Tarot.

Each sign of the Zodiac is assigned to one of these four elements, which repeat the order of this rotation three times from beginning to end, starting with the fire sign Aries and concluding with the water sign Pisces. To an Astrologer, the characteristics of each element tells a lot about how each sign in a particular group interprets the world, engages its surroundings, and positions itself to deal with the challenges of life.
