Aspects in Astrology: A Guide to Understanding Planetary Relationships in the Horoscope
By
Sue Tompkins
The Astrology articles in this section present in-depth information on current or recent planetary aspect configurations. They offer considerable knowledge on the real-time meaning of contemporary astrology in action, written in clear, understandable "plain English" -- with an absolute minimum of astrological jargon.
Articles with aspects still engaged will have meaning and interest for a general audience. Archived articles whose aspects have peaked and separated will still have considerable material of interest to serious astrologers who find themselves working with these energies in event charts and natal charts.

General Information on Aspects
Obviously, the slower moving the planet, the longer it takes moving through the signs of the Zodiac and the houses of an individual Natal Chart. The outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto when it's in certain signs, retrograde in a way that can best be called "leisurely" as they travel, rocking repeatedly across the degrees of the sign .. thereby acquiring considerable influence in the events, changes, and consequences with which they are associated in the affairs of the world ... and individual lives.

Applying Aspects ... Separating Aspects?
Which Are Stronger?
In a Natal Chart, applying aspects (one which have not yet reached "exactness" in degree and minute between the faster and slower planet) tend to be "stronger" ... more obviously a part of the Native's character and experience. Symbolically, they represent qualities the Native is working to develop, hence the need for more practice, more fortitude, more display of these talents and abilities ... or in the case of difficult aspects, more urgent need to "work with the problem" and find some accommodation for these different energies.

What are Aspects in Astrology?
Aspects are the different angles planets form with one another as they move through the sky at their different speeds and in their different orbits. It is the aspects -- these angles -- planets make between themselves, either between planets in the sky or between planet positions in the sky when compared to the stationary planet positions in a Natal Chart -- which allow an astrologer to see and describe the way the energies they represent interact in a horoscope, and so in the character or evolution of the person or event being studied.

Major Aspects in Astrology
Conjunctions
A conjunction thus represents a strong, unbreakable alliance between the characteristics, assets, and methods of the two or more planetary placements. Because the planets operate in this united fashion - the personality matters and life concerns designated and governed by one cannot be considered without taking all the personality matters and life concerns designated and governed by the other(s) into account at the same time.

Sextiles
A sextile is an angle between two planets of approximately 60 degrees + / - 8 degrees. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a benevolent, advantageous relationship to one another, each offering the other opportunities to work together for mutually favorable expression. A sextile indicates that the personal qualities each planet represents support one another harmoniously in the character of the person whose chart contains them.

Squares
A square is an angle between two planets of approximately 90 degrees + / - 8 to 10 degrees ... such that the planets are at roughly right angles to one another in the circle of the horoscope chart. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a difficult and challenging position, each seeming to block, impede, frustrate and hinder the complete or positive expression of the other.

Trines
A trine is an angle between two planets of approximately 120 degrees + / - 8 degrees. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a benevolent, advantageous relationship to one another, each offering the other outlets for mutually favorable expression - qualities that amount to genuine natural talents in the character of the person whose chart contains the trine.

Oppositions
An opposition is an angle between two planets of approximately 180 degrees + / - 8 to 10 degrees ... such that the planets literally oppose one another across the circle of the horoscope chart. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a difficult and challenging relationship to one another, each seeming to require one's full attention and compliance ... often creating a feeling of having to serve two Masters at once.

Intermediate Aspects in Astrology
Semi-Sextiles
A semi-sextile, as the name itself implies, is an angle that is half a 60 degree sextile. In other words, an angle of 30 degrees + / - 4 to 6 degrees of arc. Because these angles do seem to be a little less noticeable in the practical world, my preference is to narrow the orb of influence in order to deal with them during their time of maximum potency. It's been my experience that anything more liberal often deals with energy that isn't obvious enough to make much sense -- or offer much knowledge or control to those dealing with this angle and its meaning.

Inconjuncts
An inconjunct is an aspect of 150 degrees between planet placements, again + / - 4 to 6 degrees. As with the semi-sextile, these angles do seem to be a little less noticeable in the practical world, as they often deal with inner adjustments the person may have to handle -- or the event may have to accommodate, but which aren't apt to be obvious to an observer.
