A number of ancient cultures, the Egyptians for instance with their image of Ra, elevated The Sun to the status of a god and then placed him at the supreme position of power in their particular pantheon. Primitive and remarkably sophisticated cultures alike recognized their life's dependence on the sun's light and heat ... and honored his presence with this religious status and their worship. The Sun God -- deified and called by many names -- was commonly and traditionally considered the chief element among the supernatural forces, the King of the Gods, the supreme ruler of heaven.
Worship, rituals, ceremonies, feasts, and festivals were all variously intended to honor the Sun God's presence, cultivate his favor, and keep him diligent in the performance of his daily passages
In their departure from this, the Greeks and Romans were unusual. These cultures had Helios. Apollo, or Sol characterized as the Sun god, a deity who drove a fiery horse-drawn chariot across the sky each day. The King of the God, though, was someone else. The Greeks had Zeus, the Romans ... Jupiter
He was a figure of surprising dimension, complexity, and contradictions. He was human-like in that his personality grew, changed, and deepened as his mythology itself developed. Like humans he made mistakes, experienced remorse and second thoughts about his behavior, was self-justifying, self-indulgent ... and self-deceiving.
