Some of the interests ... and qualities ... associated with Jupiter sound quaint, even covertly amusing, in our cynical times. Jupiter is associated with things like ethics, philosophy, moral principles, religion, spiritual convictions, generosity, noble intentions and motives, high-mindedness, idealism, candor, honesty, decency, and conscience. It's presence in your Natal Chart ... and its placement by sign and house ... depict your longing to connect with an altruistic ideal, the company of some spiritual notion or entity greater than you are.

In these symbols and metaphors you will find the urge to merge your life and thinking into some noble venture or solemn belief that provides a moral center and sense of meaning to your existence. In your Jupiter placements and experiences, you are seeking that one clear voice that always speaks the truth ... and provides a channel that can draw you into something momentous ... something larger than simply the life you can build with your own concepts ... or your own hands.

Jupiter is like the cross crusaders watched to give them inspiration as they traveled on their mission ... or like the sacred star that guided the Magi to Bethlehem ... and their own date with destiny. This sense of holiness and Karmic purpose surrounding Jupiter and its power in your world is undeniable. Without it, you are somehow less than you hope to be ... less than you can be, less than you ought to be. And when that happens, sadly, we are all impoverished for the loss. In its presence, though, you are invited to open your mind ... and accept a greater view of yourself, your possibilities, and your place in Life's Grand Scheme.

It can't help but be exciting, this realization that you are part of something far greater than simply yourself. You're part of something infinite ... that needs your part of the mosaic to be complete. You have a right therefore, maybe even a responsibility, to constantly aspire to a higher expression of what you are ... to reach for the best you can be ... and see how far that reach extends, how far that ambition can take you, and where you wind up for trying. In one form or another, that has been the message of mystics and religious teachers through the centuries, though religion as a concept seems to fall in and out of favor in the cyclical way of all things.

Sometimes it's fashionable to be devout and committed ... and people publicly, proudly proclaim their principles and their faith ... sometimes with a zeal that is downright dangerous. Sometimes it's fashionable instead to be a skeptic, an agnostic. Philosophers write ... and declare some version of "God is dead." And the wheels of life and thought continue to turn ... to bring the faithful around again. Perhaps somewhere in his heaven, God himself smiles at the news -- once more. Then turns back to his latest creative project. After all, it has got to be much more interesting than another round of stale, false rumor.

But by separating ourselves ... or worse ... openly denying the ethical and moral dimensions of life, we foreclose many of our human possibilities. Since it's obvious that you miss 100% of the shots you never take, this choice is not only crippling, it's offensive ... even dangerous ... in its passive acceptance of failure. The person who takes this route charts a perilous course through a meaningless wasteland of amorality, burned out feelings, and hopelessness. Without direction, any destination becomes a stopping place only by accident ... and life loses the noble splendor of meaning.

It's Jupiter's energy that rescues us from this waking death. By giving us ideals, aspirations, a moral compass, and the zest to chase long-term goals ... it revitalizes life's purpose. Sure, religion can do this. For many people it does. But this joyous sparkle doesn't need to come wrapped in dogma and theology. A simple belief in yourself, your mind, your greater self, and your prospects ... and you can let the games being. Dedication is what it takes. To anything. And whatever inspires that for you ... becomes the starting point ... or the place of beginning again. Maybe that's why Jupiter's Sagittarius expression is depicted by the archer. In short ... he needs a target.
