The Sun moved into Capricorn yesterday, signaling the Winter Solstice and the final quarter of this astrological cycle. When the Sun is in Capricorn, people use their personal energy more conservatively, deliberately, and with more dignity and determination than at other times.

They value behaviors and methods that are frugal, methodical, organized, persistent, serious, practical, responsible, and prudent. With the Sun in Capricorn, there is also emphasis on abstract concerns like public reputation, professional accomplishments, career direction, the accumulation of status and prestige, and the honor they are able to claim in the eyes of the world.

Venus in Capricorn opposed Jupiter in Cancer early yesterday morning. (7:22 AM EST, 4:22 AM PST), joining the Sun in Capricorn which formed this angle two days ago. This ushers in a week of interesting, if less than admirable, interaction between three notoriously hedonistic energies in two extremely status- and security-conscious signs.

On January 14, Venus finally caught up in its orbit to align with The Sun at 24° of Capricorn. This is an aspect that forms about once a year, but the signs and the timing are variable. Last year, Venus became conjunct to The Sun while in retrograde motion at 9° of Aries on March 29. It finally went direct again late on April 19 -- and has been chasing The Sun ever since -- trying to catch up again, a pattern that will play out between these two celestial bodies as long as they exist.

When the Sun is in Aquarius, people tend to use their personal energy more adventurously, compassionately, and imaginatively. They value behaviors and methods that are sociable, innovative, clever, eclectic, original, self-sufficient, liberal, open-minded, and even strange. There is also emphasis on abstract concerns like their goals for the future, "making progess," being independent, advancing their humanitarian interests, and dealing with friends and others in their social and professional network.

The Sun in Aquarius is now sextile to Mars in Aries ... a nice aspect of progress and productivity that will last more than three weeks before it starts to diminish. Sextiles represent moments of opportunity and insight, moments when the energy of both the planets can be put to beneficial use, stimulated by the assets and qualities of one another. Here's what the aspect looks like on paper.

Notice there are a couple of caveats in what I just said, however. Neither of these energies deals with frustration quietly -- or calmly. This is not a combination that will sit and gently seethe under pressure. If it gets upset, everyone in a five mile radius will hear its complaints ... and rue the moment this feisty dynamo spun into high gear.

A very interesting pattern is arranging itself in the sky at the moment. The Sun, Mercury, Venus and Neptune are all conjunct in Aquarius ... sextile to Mars in Aries ... trine to Saturn in Gemini ... inconjunct to Jupiter in Cancer (and on Saturday morning the Moon was also part of this arrangement) ... and are mediating the loose opposition between Saturn and Pluto.

The Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Neptune conjunction brings a powerful merging of ego energy and interests, combined with intellectual focus and communications ability, combined with connections to money and relationships, combined finally with spiritual inclinations and mystical inspiration ... all together in one tight package in the highly progressive, altruistic, and future oriented sign of Aquarius.

The Sun in Aquarius conjuncts (occupies the same degree and minute of arc as) Uranus in Aquarius today. This happens once every year ... and marks the beginning of a new cycle of progress when goals and ambitions for the future become bolder and more daring. You will begin to seek ways to live with more freedom and ways to guide your life by your own lights. It's a time when you have less interest in "rules" ... and more interest in being uniquely yourself, involved with your own destiny as you yourself define it.

There is also emphasis on abstract concerns like artistic endeavors, mystical interests, matters of faith, time spent in seclusion and contemplation, projects that stimulate and require use of the imagination, and ways to offer help to those who are dependent and needy.

Mercury in Aries, after its most recent period in Retrograde (back in late January and early February) has caught up to the Sun again ... and passed it. For the next few days, Mercury is in a position astrologers refer to as being "combust to the Sun." Those who consider this condition important argue that the power of the Sun -- with its ego force and robust self-identity -- will, in this position, overshadow the more finely tuned and delicate intellectual sensibilities of Mercury.
