Descartes, breaking awareness and existence down to the most basic elements of his philosophy, expressed this concept beautifully with "I think, therefore, I am" -- a sentence whose simple elegance rivals E = mc2. Right after The Fool -- the image of self-awareness in the Major Arcana of the Tarot -- comes The Magician -- the awesome symbol of self-knowledge and the conscious mind. Even the Judeo-Christian Bible, the foundation document for two of the world's great religions acknowledges the importance of mind and communication. "In the Beginning was the Word ..."

Gemini's intellectual awareness is a quantum leap forward from the limits of basic instinct ... and the passion for merely "stayin' alive." With Gemini's gifts, humankind can plan, analyze, remember, dissect, extrapolate, hypothesize, conceptualize, describe, explain, predict ... and communicate one mind's notions and experiences to all other minds who speak the language. And with that, the great debate of conversation and learning can begin.

Simple, organized thought can produce routines ... for taking care of business efficiently. It can provide leisure time ... in which to develop skills and further ingenuity. Noting cause and effect, action and reaction, provocation and consequence helps us learn not just about the world first hand ... it lets human beings learn from each other's successes and mistakes. Taurean's love of luxury may have invented the concept of the cold drink, the remote control, and the easy chair, but Gemini ingenuity invented television, telephones, automobiles, and the internet. (Yes, Geminis would probably like to claim credit for the computer, but they needed Aquarian brilliance to boost the promise of that marvelous tool to that particular height. It was that partnership, the selection of thinkers born with Uranus in Gemini that made the computer a household accessory and circled the globe with a communication's network of instant delivery.)

Back in history's dim past, it was also Gemini energy that came up with spoken language, writing, printing, codes, the telegraph, libraries, schools, and ways to get from one place to another without having to wander every step of the way on our own two feet. Gemini is an energy of amazing innovation, invention, and application. It not only makes life more interesting and shrinks the global village ... it shows that a mind isn't simply a terrible thing to waste, but that without the human mind's amazing gifts, the species itself might be mostly a waste.
