Deciphering the Messages of the Mind
Mercury -- Ruler of Gemini
Mercury, quick, intense, lively and highly mobile --racing its way around the Sun faster than any of the other known planets, is the astrological metaphor which symbolizes an individual's mental and communications skills, the intellectual components of his personality, the inner self that deals with physical movement, informational exchange, discrimination, learning and analysis. As the metaphor for "communication skills and brain power": ... it represents a dimension that makes humans unusual, even unique, among other life forms.
Mercury -- Ruler of Gemini

Mercury -- Ruler of Virgo
The mental skills a person has and the way he uses them tells a great deal about his personality, the construction of his values, his outlook on the world, and his ability to have his ideas and knowledge make an impact on that world. Mercury energy, in and of itself, is considered neutral, somewhat sterile, and even impersonal -- as befits the qualities of reason and logic -- being, in its pure form, devoid of both ego and emotional considerations.

Mercury and Uranus
Navigating the Here-and-Now
... and Reaching for Tomorrow
Uranus is considered "the higher octave" of Mercury -- the transpersonal, more refined Astrological representative of intellectual energy, the greater expression of human genius. In Astrology, Mercury represents your ability to think, study, work with information -- and otherwise use your mind.
The signs it rules, Gemini and Virgo, deal mostly with routine, everyday issues. Exploring the world, acquiring and applying knowledge, sharing what you know -- and finding out what others think and have learned, forming opinions -- and collecting the facts from which to build them, getting around, learning judgment and discrimination -- and getting work done. Certainly there are brilliant minds represented by both Mercury in Gemini and Mercury in Virgo -- Mercury in all signs, for that matter.

Mercury in a Natal Chart
Fore, Aft, and Center
Mercury, named for the Roman god of commerce, communication and messages, has come to symbolize in Astrology, the way a Native employs his mind, wit, charm, and intellect, the way he communicates his thoughts, views, and opinions, and the way he acquires ... and applies ... the knowledge and information he uses to manage his life. Mercury is concerned with learning, logic, rational analysis, and language skills.

When Mercury Trails the Sun
Mercury represents your conscious, rational mind; your intellectual self; your capacity to use mental energy; your ability to study, learn, analyze and communicate information; your capacity to form ideas and opinions; the way you deal with facts; and the way you process data.
Mercury rules two Astrological signs, Gemini and Virgo, both signs that place high value on intellect, mental clarity, the correct use of knowledge, precision, discrimination, communication, and logic.
Mercury is always in either the same sign as the Sun, or in the sign immediately before or after the Sun in a Natal Chart and in the present day sky. That fact itself can tell some interesting things about the way a person uses his mind -- both as a rule in his everyday life and during the special moods and circumstances that prevail when transiting Mercury is in one position or the other relative to the Sun.

When Mercury Moves Behind the Sun
When Mercury retrogrades, which it does about three times every year, it will at some point pass the Sun and move into what Astrologers call its trailing position. -- following the Sun instead of preceding it. Relatively speaking, this puts Mercury in a 12th House position to the Sun ... rather than the out-front 1st House position it occupies the rest of the time. Mercury is always very close to the Sun -- in a Natal Chart as well as in the sky. Astrologers know they are never more than 28° apart -- on paper.

Gemini
A Being of Two Minds
Once a new life form can show initiative, attain goals (like finding food and water), protect itself and support itself, it has the basic stuff to continue living. Some might think that would be enough, and for some expressions of spirit, it is. But the Universe, and whatever Divine Spirit directs it, knows better. It knows the joys of creativity, variety, curiosity, intellect ... and sharing. And from that magic mix of motives, Gemini was born.

About Mercury
Mercury is named for the Roman god of messages and communication ... the god who literally had wings on his feet. The Greeks called this deity Hermes ... who was also considered a healer. Thus you have the connection in Astrology between Mercury the messenger (ruling Gemini ... the sign of thought, communication, and intellect) and Mercury the worker / lifestyle manager (ruling Virgo ... the sign of service, health concerns, and discriminating logic and analysis)

Meet Mercury at the Crossroads of Life
The planet Mercury is a complex and enigmatic planet that has much more to do with our lives than just "communication", like faxes, emails, answering machines, telephones and media. Mercury in ancient astrology was the Winged Messenger of the Gods. In the Iliad and the Odyssey when someone had a bright idea, instead of a lightbulb appearing over their heads, the Greeks and Romans sketched in an imaginary god, Mercury, who had just arrived on the scene with inspiration from "on high". After all, how could a mere mortal think of some of these brilliant solutions?
