When Mercury Trails the Sun

Mercury represents your conscious, rational mind; your intellectual self; your capacity to use mental energy; your ability to study, learn, analyze and communicate information; your capacity to form ideas and opinions; the way you deal with facts; and the way you process data.

Mercury rules two Astrological signs, Gemini and Virgo, both signs that place high value on intellect, mental clarity, the correct use of knowledge, precision, discrimination, communication, and logic.

Mercury is always in either the same sign as the Sun, or in the sign immediately before or after the Sun in a Natal Chart and in the present day sky. That fact itself can tell some interesting things about the way a person uses his mind -- both as a rule in his everyday life and during the special moods and circumstances that prevail when transiting Mercury is in one position or the other relative to the Sun.

When Mercury retrogrades, which it does about three times every year, it will at some point pass the Sun and move into what Astrologers call its trailing position. -- following the Sun instead of preceding it. Relatively speaking, this puts Mercury in a 12th House position to the Sun ... rather than the out-front 1st House position it occupies the rest of the time. Mercury is always very close to the Sun -- in a Natal Chart as well as in the sky. Astrologers know they are never more than 28° apart -- on paper.
