The horoscope is divided into twelve different sections called houses ... which represent the twelve major divisions of life interest and experience. The house in your Natal Chart which contains Mercury shows the area of life experience where you have the greatest intellectual investment, where you spend a lot of time thinking and learning, the subjects around which your ideas cluster - and the concerns that color your viewpoints, the matters on which you concentrate your opinions, and where you want to claim intellectual authority and "show off what you know."

These are the areas of concern related to the different houses of the horoscope.

• First -- personal presentation
• Second -- money, support, and material possessions
• Third -- mind, intellect, language skills
• Fourth -- home, family, foundations, private life
• Fifth -- children, creativity, self-promotion
• Sixth -- work, service, health, lifestyle issues
• Seventh -- partnerships, relationships, other people, marriage
• Eighth -- community property, recycling, self-improvement, death and rebirth
• Ninth -- philosophy, travel, morality, higher education, religion, law
• Tenth -- professional interests, career, public life, authority and image
• Eleventh -- long-term goals, future possibilities, humanitarian ideals
• Twelfth -- privacy, planning, healing, background support, mystical and artistic interests

This is the area of practical life that involves your intellect and your verbal skills, the environment, efforts, activities and context from which you draw your ideas and on which you concentrate your everyday "education" and learning. It is the general area where you collect knowledge ... and therefore about which you tend to "know a lot." It is the area through which you use your mind and your ability to communicate as your strategies for engaging life. It is the "home" of your intellectual self.

The house in your Natal Chart containing Mercury shows the most fertile ground for your intellectual development, the area where your interests -- and therefore your greatest mental expertise is found, where communication skills may be essential in the conduct of your life's business, and where you need to apply a lot of thought and use a variety of learning and information.

Thus someone with Mercury in the 2nd House will be focused on practical affairs and financial matters. This person will devote a lot of thought and effort to matters of income and possessions. He will handle ideas prudently and be fairly resolute and stubborn in the thoughts he constructs and puts forth. This is an intellectual energy that likes to plan ahead ... and then follow those plans come what may.

Someone with Mercury in the 4th House, by contrast, is focused on family matters, his private life and home circumstances, psychological security issues, and the relationships and conditions in his personal world. He will devote a lot of thought and effort to conversation and knowledge about family issues -- and will definitely be the one to go to for the latest family gossip. He will also be unusually sympathetic and protective about his family and home life, and he will need to know everything is all right there in order to be okay himself.
