Mars energy is about taking action, doing physical work and pursuing personal ambitions. Mars energy is dynamic and ambitious. It gets things going ... and gets things done. The productive use of Mars energy is a necessary part of taking care of yourself -- and pushing your agendas and desires to completion. Without a healthy, well-supported Mars on your side in life -- or if your Mars energy is seriously depleted and watered-down -- you basically wind up chasing your tail ... going nowhere.

Diminished Mars energy -- when Mars is weak, unsupported or lacking in get-up-and-go is objectively different from afflicted Mars energy -- when Mars is blocked, hindered or frustrated. The first case invites its owner to just lie around, accomplish nothing, have no goals or direction ... and whine about being victimized, unmotivated and directionless. People with diminished Mars energy often don't even do what is needed to take care of themselves, support themselves or defend themselves.

Afflicted Mars, on the other hand, denotes anger, aggression, rage -- and can explode in violent, even criminal acts when it finally gets f***ing fed up and ready to kill (literally) whoever doesn't get out of its way! (Even worse is the fact that Mars can be both diminished and afflicted at the same time, which poses a real problem for the native ... and anyone who has to deal with him!)

People dealing with afflicted Mars energy can indeed be dangerous -- to others and to themselves, because afflicted Mars can also be impulsive, rash and self-destructive ... acting without thinking things through, leaping without looking, reacting from emotion in ways that can honest-to-goodness define temporary insanity.

Examples of diminished Mars might be Mars in any of the Water Signs (especially Cancer and Pisces), Mars in 4th House or 12th House, Mars in Libra (the sign of its detriment -- as the sign opposite Aries, the sign Mars rules), Mars completely unaspected in a Natal Chart. Occasionally Mars conjunct Venus, Neptune or the Moon can weaken its ability to "perform as it should" -- especially if this combination is in one of the signs I just mentioned.

Examples of afflicted Mars can be Mars in square or opposition to virtually any planet, but especially when this aspect involves the outer planets -- Jupiter through Pluto, Mars in Aries or Scorpio if not very well directed and supported by other chart elements, Mars with problematic aspects and residing in 1st, 7th, 8th or 12th House.

Other astrologers can probably make other arguments for other choices, but these are the things I look for in a Natal Chart when judging when a native may have motivation problems, anger issues or even violent tendencies.

Mars energy in trouble is serious Warrior energy in trouble ... and that can range from passivity (or laziness!) amounting to inertia, physical weakness (including impotence and other sexual dysfunctions) to brutality, bullying behavior and the misuse of force which can regularly cross legitimate boundaries into criminality. It is certainly something to note and treat with appropriate care.
