It's been uncharacteristically quiet in the sky this week, but still there's long-term stuff going on ... developing ... changing ... becoming more entrenched and obvious in the work that's underway in all our lives.

Work, of course, can mean physical effort and the creation of tangible products to strengthen and improve our lives. It can also mean psychological growth -- inner changes -- character development ... because we and the lives we build day-by-day are all continual works-of-art-in-progress. Always, always "in progress."

There's no such thing as "happily ever after." There's always something new to learn ... something more to do. (Or as I sometimes put it ... another hill to climb. Gilda Radner, God bless her, was right ... It's always something.)

So while things are relatively peaceful -- at least regarding new events, how about we recap some of these ongoing, extensive trends -- because, clearly the longer something lasts, the more important it's likely to be ... and the more experiences and adjustments Life will ask of us in response to the invitations of all this new growth -- inner and outer.

Today, I guess I'm ready to talk more about Mars Retrograde ... because right now, Mars is retrograde in Leo -- and since Mars retrogrades only about once every two years ... this is both a reasonably uncommon occurrence -- and an important part of Life's creative flow. I've written about it before. We've been working with it for a while. And we have quite a ways to go. So, let's pause for a few minutes to take some sightings on where we are and where we are heading.

Mars was last retrograde in Leo in early 1995. (A wrenching, life-altering time for me. How about you?) The Mars / Leo Rx time before that was in early 1980. (Ditto on the "life-altering" changes. Mars Rx in Leo travels through my 8th house of death-and-rebuilding ... which contains Natal Saturn and Pluto -- two guys with lots of Karmic clout! There's already been plenty of action in response to this energy and its evolutionary changes. I'm kind of holding my breath to see what else arrives -- 'cause this show ain't over yet! For any of us.)

Maybe that's why I've decided to talk about this particular planet on this snowy winter day. The new channels it carves in the landscape of your life -- before it finally moves on -- can be substantial. And memorable. And require a lot of accommodation!!! Those details are important to keep in mind -- at least in the back of our minds -- as the next few weeks finish lining up the Mars-related agenda we'll each follow over the next couple of years.

Mars energy is about taking action, doing physical work and pursuing personal ambitions. Mars energy is dynamic and ambitious. It gets things going ... and gets things done. The productive use of Mars energy is a necessary part of taking care of yourself -- and pushing your agendas and desires to completion. Without a healthy, well-supported Mars on your side in life -- or if your Mars energy is seriously depleted and watered-down -- you basically wind up chasing your tail ... going nowhere.

Some astrologers consider retrograde planets to be weakened in their influence and activity. They use words like diminished, ineffective, and even handicapped to describe the qualities and action of a retrograde planet compared to its normal, direct, healthy self. I don't think I agree with any of those words when it comes to retrograde energy. I don't think a retrograde planet is hamstrung in its activity and results, but I do find that a retrograde planet behaves differently than its usual straight-forward, candid qualities.

The impact on you and your life, however ... inside where you really live, can be substantial, and the life-experiences wrought by Mars retrograde, in particular, give me a healthy regard for its power, no matter which way it's traveling.

I will say that Mars Rx in Leo seems to leave me with fewer viable options than a control-freak like me would like. The changes it brings are emphatically "the kind that can't be undone." And, yes, questions of personal power and powerlessness are emphatically highlighted during its tenure. But that could also be due to its position in my chart.

You'll need to judge what these times have brought to your life -- and draw your own conclusions about whether you feel this energy is at all weak -- or depleted -- where you're concerned! I'll also say the writer in me can split semantic hairs until the cows come home ... so it could also be a matter of terminology. (FYI, there's an essay here on what I do consider Mars energy to be like when diminished or afflicted ... and even those two states are not the same in my book.)

And neither are necessarily the kind of work I see going on in my life and elsewhere when Mars is retrograde. However ... Mars can be retrograde. Mars can be diminished. Mars can be afflicted -- or any combination of the three. It can, indeed, be retrograde, diminished and afflicted all at the same time -- which is a cosmic mess of the first order. I know better than to say I hope it never happens to you -- because it will, and it probably already has. But I can say, I hope it doesn't happen often. It is not fun. Not one bit.
