The Drumbeat of Mars
Marching to Its Own Militant Music

The glyph for Mars in Astrology is the well-known symbol for male in biology. Even in this stylized representation, it is phallic, sexual and blatant in what it depicts ... and anyone who has ever seen one of "the real thing" it signifies recognizes it at once. Mars, and the energy associated with it, is assertive, aroused, fired-up, on the prowl and ready for action! No wonder it has such a formidable (and sometimes forbidding) reputation among the more timid and peace-loving souls of the Zodiac. Mars' Prime Directive is to advance, to conquer, to compete ... to win. And it makes no apologies for that.

Mars is the ruler of Astrology sign Aries ... not a group of folks you want to tangle with unless you're ready for a scrap -- but definitely folks you want on your side if force -- for whatever reason -- may be necessary. Mars is pushy, self-starting and brimful of initiative. It is great at inspiring new forms of self-expression -- and giving them form ... so others can understand and benefit from them. Mars gets things done. It makes advances. Progress is its most important product. It does not sit around and wait for help, permission, or even a more congenial set of conditions -- not when it's got a goal to chase ... and nothing better to do with its time.

Along with the Sun, Mars' position in the horoscope by sign and house denotes the urge to lead, to command, to exert power ... on the world and over others. Both energies are driven by compelling ego needs and the desire to express themselves ... to gain attention ... to have impact on the world around them. Sun energy wants to be seen as important and impressive. Mars energy will settle for intimidation -- if necessary. In fact, something that is won "too easily" may lose its value to Mars ... and keep it searching for a challenge. Mars is the warrior force -- in the individual and in the Zodiac. It gets restless and antsy when it's too long in idle.

Mars energy is unabashedly sexual, physical rather than idealistic ... looking for the love-and-sexual conquest rather than the noble cause to champion. Yes, it can sublimate a lot of its urges into more "noble," more abstract -- and arguably more productive and helpful -- projects, but the urge for sexual release is never lost ... and must eventually be satisfied. Mars is aggressive rather than cooperative, with courage and stamina to spare. It counts its successes in life in "victories won." And when the last man standing in a confrontation is the deciding factor, that final score can be an easy tally.

Mars energy is viewed cautiously ... and critically ... by a world that has seen far too much of the damage he can do on a rampage. War is his forte ... bloody and brutal. Out of control, his destructive force is horrifying. But Mars energy is a necessary component in everyone's character. Along with aggression and brute force, it is also the fuel for self-defense -- and that is, indeed, a necessary survival skill. Mars' focus on gaining its desires and insuring its own safety can be remarkable ... and good ... and essential. The life force that cannot or will not defend itself and its interests is in serious trouble.

The other side of Mars' destructive power, of course, is its creative potential. Pluto, as the higher octave of Mars, is perhaps more awesome in this -- both because its destruction and regeneration powers are so immense and its ability to achieve this miracle on such a massive scale and against more forbidding odds is undeniable. But Mars, as the personal expression, rather than the global expression, of demolition and new creation is not to be dismissed. This cycle is just as important on a micro-scale as on a cosmic one.
