A time for joy
With the arrival of the New Moon in Leo, we've passed completely through the powerful time of Cancer energy, whose beginning is always marked by the Summer Solstice.
The New Moon in Cancer puts emphasis on emotional bonds, family ties, roots, heritage, home and deep security issues. In Cancer, we are extra-concerned about survival, family safety and well-being, self-protection ... and all the emotional and psychological hot-buttons those contain.
The New Moon in Leo, though, is wonderfully different. It carries a feeling of pure joy, creativity, playfulness, "attention-getting," speculation and romance than the complex moods of Cancer.
And moving on
The progression of signs through the Zodiac contains the Circle of Creation ... the process of being -- from beginning to end ... portrayed in the drama of life. At this point, we've established a new beginning and the genesis of individual identity in Aries. We solidified and grounded this in Taurus ... by acquiring the resources, including money, one needs to survive in the physical world.
We discovered an ability to think, communicate and learn in Gemini -- skills most definitely necessary to growth and continuance. And we established a home and family support system in Cancer. With this protection, security, and home base as background, we can now move into other pursuits.
Other choices ... other needs
In his work and theories, Abraham Maslow discussed a "hierarchy of needs" that when you think about it seems self-evident. You need a ready, dependable source of supply for basic survival issues before you can go on to develop other things important to a full and satisfying life. But those can "wait" while you figure out how to keep yourself and your loved ones alive.
When you don't have what you need here, it gets your attention fast. Until it gets fixed, you have nothing to spare to invest in anything else. If you suddenly can't breathe, the search for food, romance or entertainment goes straight out the window. And if you are literally starving, you put energy into finding food, not getting a professional promotion. Everything else is on hold indefinitely.
Like fun and games
The focus for Aries (getting born), Taurus (getting food, nurturing care, and money), Gemini (getting information, learning to communicate, intellectual development), and Cancer (getting shelter, emotional connection, and a "family circle") -- the first quarter of the Zodiac -- all deal with things we literally cannot live long without.
Only now, in Leo, can we move beyond "basic survival." But Leo rules another kind of survival issues -- our creative efforts, romantic exploits, love interests, leisure preferences, and the ability to be noticed for our talents and gifts. These are less urgent than air, food, water and shelter, but once we get here with the "fundamental stuff" supplied enough to keep us going, it's playtime!!
And creating something new
Just as The Moon, with its metaphors of changeability, softness, mystery and reflection, is "at home" in Cancer, The Sun -- with its metaphors of power, dazzling radiance, dominance, and the need to shine -- is "at home" in Leo.
Leo energy is chockful of self-awareness and self-assurance, a desire to have impact and influence in the world. Leo shows leadership and invites self-expression. It helps you build a creative legacy through art, children, "brain children" and other devices. All these have a theme: seeking attention -- being "center stage." Leo wants people to notice him!!! And he will do whatever it takes to get that.
The art of self-discovery
Notice all the words with "self" here? So is Leo self-centered? You bet. As are many creative people in creative mode, plumbing their depths for material. Artists, actors and writers are notoriously self-centered. The inward focus of their work requires it.
And children are self-centered ... another topic ruled by Leo. They are the very "offspring" Leo plans to produce. Children are one's most personal link to the future, a piece of immortality. (And those of us who love Leos ... and writers ... and artists ... and Leos who are writers and artists know they are all just big kids at heart.)
And healthy self-pride
Leo people are famous -- and infamous -- for their confidence, vitality, charisma, courage, pride and ego. Sometimes even that last one is a virtue ... played out with grace, respect and generosity from the paw of a very evolved lion. It doesn't happen often, but it can be a masterpiece of example for others to see and follow, for this kind of confidence is way too rare.
Healthy, positive Leos are rightfully proud of themselves. They want to be noticed, admired, fussed over, sought after and taken into account. They really, really, really want applause and appreciation. (Ok, they really want to be put on a pedestal, proclaimed King or Queen of the world, have statues dedicated to them and their photo on postage stamps. They want that kind of applause and appreciation, but I'm tryin' to be realistic here!!)
In return, they are romantic, magnanimous, fun-loving and often adorably child-like in their attitude of delight. Who could deny them their unabashed drama, seeking notice wherever they can? Leos are emphatically creatures of pleasure. They are the lovers of life who are loved by the world. Leos ... "just wanna have fun."
The energies of both Leo and The Sun draw from the Jungian archetype of The Divine Child, the "inner kid" of pop psychology fame (although undeniably real); the part of us that is always young at heart. Leo is the piece of our spirit that is constantly renewing, filled with wonder and ever-free to love the richness and variety of the world we romp through in search of new discoveries.
One definition of success
It is our sense of adventure and romance; our joie de vivre, our zest for living, our willingness to "take a risk and see what happens" -- including falling in love, perhaps the biggest risk of all. It is, in many ways, the best and most charming part of us -- each and every one of us.
Leo / Sun energy (and sometimes even more, Leo Moon energy -- since it's so instinctive) is dignified, proud and inspiring. It is the catalog of qualities we look for in our "leaders" ... and what we also want our children to achieve. There's a well-defined "successful life" here ... with Moon energy (the alignment of Sun and Moon in Leo creates this New Moon) to provide the caring-and-human dimension we all need.
With confidence to spare
Leo energy is stately, even elegant in its presentation. It commands genuine respect through sheer force of personality. Those who own it walk a little taller, stand a little straighter and have a little-bit-more dazzling smile -- all evidence of their undeniable pride in who they are. They expect the world to notice them ... and the world, as a rule, will oblige.
When this energy is not supported or when it conflicts with other inner selves, it brings actions and attitudes that are arrogant, self-absorbed, haughty and vain. It is also narcissistic and cruel.
Aquarius -- on the other side of the dial
The polarity sign for Leo is Aquarius -- Fixed Air. Leo finds ways to support itself, its creativity, its children, its ego, and its connections to pleasure and joy. It provides leadership and makes a dramatic statement about the proud power of ego. When it doesn't run amok and become inflated conceit it can show the world what self-esteem and this kind of self-confidence can achieve.
Aquarius takes on these same concerns and concentrates on a grander scale. An Air sign, Aquarius keeps its involvement abstract ... rather than emotional (like the Water Signs) or practical (like the Earth signs.) It seeks to support society's need, interests, and welfare well into the future.
Not me ... us
Aquarius is concerned with the creative evolution of the social order -- its art, culture, philosophy, education and such. Aquarius wants everyone's children to be valued, advanced, fed, educated, afforded the opportunity to succeed and creatively inspired to continue their advantages into the next generations.
Aquarius is just as fixed on leadership and advancing its notions, ideals, humanitarian visions, and altruistic plans ... but there is far less ego there. Therefore, it can lack the "personal touch" of Leo and seem more "Ivory Tower" in its detached independence. But individual value is a strong common theme in the energy of both signs.
A break to enjoy yourself
before getting down to work
With the arrival of the New Moon in Leo, the theme of life's creative cycle -- and the focus in general -- becomes more dramatic, self-confident, and proud. There is more interest in being recognized, showing off, blowing your own horn and pointing out what a wonderful human being you are -- to those who haven't noticed. That everyone's doing it -- makes it both easier for folks to join in and more tiresome to those who have to listen to it.
People are also concerned with their children, with exploring new hobbies and creative outlets, with having fun --just kicking back and taking things easy, with getting noticed and adding a little more spice and romance in the mix. They definitely want more ego strokes -- however they come and wherever they find them.
When stressed, people become smug, pretentious, vain and self-serving. The extraordinary emphasis on ego -- the hallmark of this sign, requires tremendous care not to cross the line of narcissism on which it treads constantly.
