Saturn is the outermost planet that can be seen with the naked eye. It was, therefore, for a long while thought to be the last of the planets, the end of our Solar System. We have since learned differently. As an astrological metaphor, it is the last of the personal planets ... meaning that from this point, the remaining planets take on a generational connotation ... and there is a considerable gap in the time sequences involved with the trans-Saturnian planets and their tenure in signs that makes this appropriate.

Saturn, for example, transits through a sign about every 2 1/2 years ... and returns to its natal location about every 29 to 30 years. Most people live long enough to see at least two of these in a lifetime ... whereas Uranus, which remains in a sign for 7 years, returns to its natal position only once every 84 years, and Neptune remains in a sign for 14 years ... and the math at that point begins to exceed substantially the normal human life span.

Saturn, with its unique band of rings, was named for the ancient mythological god of agriculture, the father of Jupiter ... and thus, in his fashion, the father of celestial royalty. And Saturn, the astrological metaphor, is very much concerned with questions of influence and distinction.
