Have You Tried Racing with the Moon?
by Rebecca Brents

In her extremely helpful and thought-provoking book Moon Signs, Donna Cunningham extensively discusses what she calls "emotional weather." By this, she means the changing currents, interests and issues symbolized by the rapidly shifting position of The Moon as it makes its eternal journey through the skies, changing signs, going void of course, moving through a regular and predictable series of phases, forming aspects with other planets -- and then dropping each ephemeral connection and moving on.
Sounds like a wonderful description of moods and feelings, doesn't it? Which is exactly what Moon energy depicts ... our changing emotional climate as we work to accommodate our intuition, our temperament ... the whole atmosphere that swirls around and colors the experiences of our day. We can be out of sorts for a few hours, and then, almost without effort, the grumbling and confusion clears up and we're ready to rock again. Back to feeling like "our old selves." Sounds like a good description of our inconstant psychological climate to me.
Cunningham's work is not the first place where I've come across that concept or that extremely apt description of "emotional weather" to define the nebulous, fleeting qualities of Moon energy. But it is a seminal theme in her work, and her writing did a lot to establish the concept -- and the phrase -- in my own view and vocabulary.
Like most people, I lived for years, not paying much attention to the changing currents and white-water moments of emotional response as hours faded into days ... and weeks ... and months. And sure, you can still wander through life that way and be perfectly fine, meeting "whatever happens" with a sense of surprise and no clear direction. But once you become aware of the "feel" of different types of Moon energy, living that way is never again so effortless. At least it hasn't been for me.
It's like you've become aware of subtle colors you couldn't see before -- or never noticed before. All at once the whole world looks sharper, more focused, more dimensional. The "way it used to look" is drab by comparison. Not quite as dramatic as the shift between black-and-white photography and color. More like the difference between high-definition TV and the look of pictures sent by the old analog signals. A nice clear difference. And important. And certainly pleasant.

For me, it was easiest to start with the "big picture" focus of major trends and changes -- like Moon phases -- and from there, refine my awareness to take in more and more of the details. It takes some concentration and time as you become consciously aware of what the Moon phase is at the moment ... and how life feels to you now under its direction.
You learn to appreciate -- and even anticipate -- the swelling upsurge and blossoming possibilities of New Moon energy. You know you'll need to accommodate the conflict of priorities during the first and fourth quarters -- and so you anticipate what's coming ... and work that into your schedule. You consider the call for balance that comes around with every Full Moon period, and just that extra notice can help you feel more balanced all around.
You learn when it's time to create ... time to teach and learn ... and can put productive effort into that. You learn when you need to solidify gains and fortify weak spots -- and wind up with fewer gaping holes in life structures you're building. You feel more stable and grounded, and that gradually becomes its own reward to work and live this way. It may become a perspective for you -- as it has for me -- that underpins your world with a richness, a grander awareness, than you had before.
The invitation to start this practical education comes around every month with the advent of the New Moon in each successive sign. But you can start anywhere, anytime. Picking up life's threads in midstream is a skill we all know -- and work with constantly. You'll get into the rhythm soon -- and can learn-as-you-go by tuning into the lectures of our online Moon Phases Class "Racing with the Moon" that plays its cycling series in the Auditorium along with the lunar tides each month.
There are eight lectures total ... which brings a new one about every two and a half days. It's something that can slip easily into place in your life's agenda -- and if it can't ... if you have to consciously clear time from your schedule to find 15 minutes of personal space just for you ... every two and a half days, maybe you need this work more than you know. Once-upon-a-time I did. So, here, in all sincerity, is a chance for you to learn from my experience -- and my work.
Teaching and learning from one another. That's what we all do in life.
