The Moon
Ruler of Cancer
The Moon, silvery, mysterious and reflective, is the astrological metaphor which symbolizes an individual's inner, feeling-based personality. Along with the Sun and the Ascendant (or Rising Sign -- the sign that was literally rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth, the Moon is one of the three most significant components in a horoscope, traditionally considered to be the second most important, but this conclusion is extremely subjective.
The Moon travels through the entire Zodiac every month, changing signs roughly every two and a half days. Its variable location can be considered one of the "explanations" why people born under the same Sun Sign can seem quite different in characteristics and personality from one another.

Moon Signs: The Key to Your Inner Life
By
Donna Cunningham
The Moon changes signs about every 2 1/2 days ... so it's impossible in many cases to know your Moon sign without a correct birth time ... and access to some of the materials you need to cast your Natal Chart. A good astrologer, of course, or a decent computer program can do that for you if you can provide the right information.
Because the Moon circles through all twelve signs in a little under a month, every year during the its travels through each sign, the Sun will be paired with all twelve Moon signs ... which is one very basic explanation why there are often noticeable differences between members of the same Sun Sign.

What Does It Mean in Astrology?

Your Moon Sign
What is it ... and why is it important?
In Astrology, the Moon represents your emotions, your inner self, your instincts, habits, and reactions. The sign it occupied when you were born is your Moon Sign in your horoscope. Your Moon Sign describes character traits, feelings, and personal responses that are very familiar to you. In fact, it's common for people to relate to their Moon Sign qualities far more than their Sun Sign characteristics when finally they learn, through research, by having their Natal Chart interpreted, or simply by accident what their Moon Sign IS ... and what it describes in their personality.

The Dark of the Moon
The Dark of the Moon is always best used to rest, recuperate, become quiet, invite calm and serenity into your world, and spend some time in personal reflection looking back over your life and personal history -- as far as you want to go into the past -- and playing with new intentions, new desires, new directions. It's a time to stay "at home" -- both physically and psychologically -- and tend to your private world and its circumstances.

The Celestial Event of the New Moon
In both astronomy and astrology, the celestial phenomenon known as the New Moon occurs at the exact moment the Sun and the Moon occupy precisely the same point in the sky-map of the Zodiac -- the same degree and minute of arc in a particular sign. In Astrology, this aspect of alignment is known as a conjunction.

The Full Moon and its Testy Temper
The aspect of the Sun opposing the Moon is the classic celestial phenomenon the rest of the world calls the Full Moon. The Full Moon symbolically highlights tension between two conflicting desires, ambitions, requirements, or sets of values -- each a respected and necessary part of life, and each somehow problematic for the other.

The Void of Course Moon
I know you've lived through days that seemed pointless, boring, unfocused, "blah," unproductive, devoid of action and excitement ... and when you seemed to just get nothing worthwhile accomplished. We all have. Days like that can be too frustrating to describe.

Just What's Going On Here?
The short answer to this question is: Your Sun sign tells about your basic ego, your Moon sign tells about you emotional inner self, and your Ascendant tells about your outer presentation to the rest of the world.

Just What's Going On Here?

Major Aspects of the Moon
It describes the astrological symbolism of the major aspects of the Moon ... the conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition ... and what these various patterns depict in the changing emotional climate of real life.
Major Aspects of the Moon

The Moon's Nodes
Unlike the Sun, Moon or other planets in a Natal Horoscope, the Moon's Nodes are not physical entities. They are theoretical, conceptual points in celestial longitude where the Moon crosses over the ecliptic -- the path of the Sun. There are two nodes of the Moon, the North node and the South node. The nodes in a Natal Chart are always directly opposite one another by sign, degree and house placement. Their motion is normally retrograde, approximately one degree every 19 days. The placement of the Nodes shows a relationship between the Moon, the Earth and the Sun. Eclipses are calculated by the movement of the nodal axis.

The Moon in its Celestial Voyage
The Moon's position in the sky and in the Zodiac plots the emotional climate of life for us all. The Moon doesn't cause the emotional shifts and changing tone of the different moods we all experience. It simply corresponds in its position to the natural rhythms of life, and as such provides a convenient indicator of what's happening, where we are in the monthly cycle of progression through the different signs from Aries to Pisces, and what phase of emotional creativity dominates in the world at any particular time.

There's More than One Kind of Weather
The Moon, Moods, and More ...
We're all affected by the weather. And we're affected by different kinds of weather. There are sunny days ... and rainy ones. Sultry, humid, stagnant days when nobody wants to move and you can't wait for the sun to go down, and stormy conditions when good cover and the protection of your home are the dearest things on earth.

Eclipses
In ancient times, eclipses were viewed with fear and wariness -- since they were imperfectly understood But even today, when we fully understand the cause of eclipses ... and can predict their appearances years in advance, there's still a definite ambivalence -- even among astrologers -- about this peculiar, visually stunning astronomical phenomenon.

Moonstruck
The Moon, which astronomers know influences the mighty tides of the Earth's oceans and which provides a ever-changing display of celestial beauty in its eternal journey across the sky, is also an extremely important symbol to astrologers. It symbolizes your instincts, habits, inner feelings, intuitions, hunches, and reactions ... your inner emotional tides, if you will, the light and dark moods that create their own ever-changing texture of feelings and responses in your life.

Moon Magic
The Moon has a mystique all its own. It is often associated with secrecy and mystery ... and is associated with strange, uncanny powers. It evokes a peculiar range of responses in cultures everywhere, from curiosity and wonder, to romance and affection, to awe and dread. In legend (and the lore of police and hospital personnel), the Full Moon brings forth weird behaviors, extreme reactions, and over-the-top emotional outbursts associated with no other time on the calendar.

Moon Signs: The Key to Your Inner Life
By
Donna Cunningham
In her extremely helpful and thought-provoking book Moon Signs, Donna Cunningham extensively discusses what she calls "emotional weather." By this, she means the changing currents, interests and issues symbolized by the rapidly shifting position of The Moon as it makes its eternal journey through the skies, changing signs, going void of course, moving through a regular and predictable series of phases, forming aspects with other planets -- and then dropping each ephemeral connection and moving on.
Sounds like a wonderful description of moods and feelings, doesn't it? Which is exactly what Moon energy depicts ... our changing emotional climate as we work to accommodate our intuition, our temperament ... the whole atmosphere that swirls around and colors the experiences of our day. We can be out of sorts for a few hours, and then, almost without effort, the grumbling and confusion clears up and we're ready to rock again. Back to feeling like "our old selves." Sounds like a good description of our inconstant psychological climate to me.
