The Lion and the Virgin
Leo and Virgo
Occasionally I mention that each sign of the Zodiac will exhibit, as its strongest, most characteristic qualities, traits which are a reaction against the excesses of the preceding sign. The example of Leo and Virgo illustrates that well.
Humble, reticent, self-effacing Virgo, devoted to helping others, tirelessly fixed on turning in "a job well done," consumed with the details and minutiae that keep life humming along instead of grinding to a stop ... its gears full of sand, dust, and cobwebs, is a far cry from proud, flamboyant, vainglorious Leo ... who sometimes seems only to care about keeping his crown and his image polished enough to suit him ... and has the effrontery to call that "work."

In the Company of the Goddess
Venus ... the Symbol of Love in the Zodiac
The planet Venus as a symbol in Astrology represents our sense of beauty and comfort, the way we deal with money and issues of physical support, and the way we manage our close relationships. It is, therefore, an important indicator of our personal values. Notice the "value" we place on all the things just listed.
Venus is always relatively close to the Sun ... and, in fact, is never more than 45 degrees away from the Sun, but the location of Venus relative to the Sun can, in and of itself, be an interesting clue to the personality described in a Natal Chart.

Speaking of Aries
A ... is also for Autonomy
One of the primary themes on the agenda of an Aries is the issue of self-identity. Holding onto their individuality is a big deal with these folks. Leos may revel in the idea of having a "following."
Capricorns may want "underlings" looking up to them. Scorpios may look for people with talents and resources they can merge with and manipulate. Libras may long to get lost in the union of partnerships. Aries wants to be recognized as a person with his own power to wield, his own right to be himself, his own ideas to hold and pursue ... and given a lot of elbow-room.

Today, Let's Talk About Aries
Astrology's Cardinal Fire Sign
What is it and why is it important?
A micro-class in Astrology
Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac, the sign of new beginnings and initiative. The entry of the Sun into Aries marks the first day of Spring, the Vernal Equinox, in the Northern Hemisphere. The arrival of Aries each year begins a new cycle of personal and evolutionary development, another turn on the spiral of life added to the millions that have gone before to bring us all to where we are today.
Aries energy -- and any planet or important personal Natal Chart placement in Aries -- draws on a reservoir of self-expression that is direct and forceful. Aries is confident and courageous; self-assertive when it has to be ... aggressive when it has to be. It knows how to make progress, how to stand its ground and how to attract attention. Aries is the Cardinal Fire sign. Ruled by Mars, it is full of vitality, creative drive and commitment. It is chockfull of get-up-and--go ... and always ready to start something new. For Aries, the simple adventure of that alone holds mighty appeal.

Why is Aries Important?

Aries
A Is for Action
Aries is the Cardinal Fire sign ... the most dynamic combination in the Zodiac. The Aries Ingress, the moment the Sun moves into Aries, marks the beginning of Spring, the Vernal Equinox ... the balance between day and night, when the two are of equal length. From this point until the Summer Solstice the time in daylight increases ... and the hours and minutes of darkness recede more and more with each passing day. The energy of life itself is stirring, stretching ... waking. Underground, germination begins ... and above ground sap in the trees starts to rise ... once again.

Today, let's talk about the Fire Signs in Astrology
What are they and why are they important?
A micro-class in Astrology
The Fire Signs of the Zodiac are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Fire signs are concerned with matters of leadership and personal charisma. They want to do things, make things happen and experience what it's like to exercise the force of their personality and willpower in the world. Fire signs are involved in "action and adventure" -- as opposed to "building and maintaining" which is the province of Earth, "thinking and analyzing" which is the province of Air, or "feeling and connecting" which is the province of Water.
Fire signs have an often well-deserved reputation for taking action without thinking things through, and putting things in motion without considering the consequences. They get high marks, however, for taking initiative -- for acting quickly and decisively in the first place. Fire signs don't fret or dither ... and they're not especially good at sitting around and waiting for things to happen. It's this very lack of patience -- especially when compared to the Earth signs ... that makes them the movers and shakers of the Zodiac.
Fire signs run on passion and seem to live by the creed, "He who hesitates is lost." The moment they've made up their minds to do something, they're ready to get underway. They're willing to "figure out the details later" ... rather than waste time in mulling and preparation. It's a quality that often lands them in trouble, but they are all talented, resourceful souls who can, indeed, figure a way out of a crunch -- and find a path to get them further toward their intended goals.
The Fire Sign's quality of literally attacking life with gusto and with a bold determination to make their mark puts an abundance of masculine characteristics on display. In fact, Fire Sign energy is emphatically associated with "masculine" pursuits like conflict, confrontation and warfare. It's also onstage in sexual conquest and in such leisure pursuits as hunting and sports -- especially contact and daredevil sports. Society, of course, supports (or at least tolerates) these traits in men more than in women, but there are indeed plenty of strong, courageous Fire Sign women around to represent the qualities in their gender, too.
Fire Sign energy is impulsive and spontaneous ... and very focused on its own desires. Fire Signs know how to attract attention -- which is certainly one of their goals. After all, charisma is measured by the respect and deference of other people -- and for that, one needs an audience. Fire Signs believe in "living for today," and can wear themselves -- and everyone around them -- out with the sheer amount of energy they spend just being themselves.
They can be demanding and bossy -- and hard to take as a steady diet. They can also be unruly and temperamental, but their independence and sheer force of personality is equally amazing. They come on strong and make no apologies. They break new ground and blaze new trails -- and are the pioneers who point to paths everyone can use to stake out new territory and discover different and better ways of life.
