Alive and Well With Pluto: Transits of Power and Renewal
By

Pluto, with its bizarre, irregular orbit, is the last of the discovered planets in this Solar System which the basic metaphorical language of astrology contains. Occasionally it is the outermost of the known planets, although during part of its journey around the Sun it moves inside the orbit of Neptune.
There is even some debate about whether it qualifies as a bona fide planet. I say it is the final one of the known planets ... because there are two others which have been mathematically proven to exist -- one inside the orbit of Mercury and one beyond the boundary of Pluto. So we know they're there. But they haven't officially been sighted yet.
Named for the mythological god of the afterlife, the realm of the dead, the King of the Underworld, Pluto is the astrological metaphor which symbolizes an individual's most fundamentally creative self. Phrased that way, it sounds very charming and exciting. In reality, it almost never is. True to the home territory of its symbolic namesake, the environment in which Pluto energy exists and does its work can be pure Hell. Often, there just is no other way to describe it.

The Book of Pluto

Another astrologer and I have a friendly disagreement going over our divergent views of Pluto. She loves the old guy. Refers to him very affectionately in her writing. Sometimes their relationship seems almost flirtatious -- like an excited groupie in the presence of a notorious rock star ... one with a scandalous, criminal and unredeemed, past. It's like watching someone unspeakably trusting and naive cavort and caper in the company of danger, believing so deeply in her own safety, she'll even taunt the menace. Makes you want to shake some sense into her.
At least I want to.
But maybe she's got the right idea. "Treat Death as an ally," the shamans tell us. Maybe then, indeed, you can afford to skip lightly in his presence. I, however, am left with the vision of someone juggling a live bomb, insisting it will never detonate ... and if it does, it doesn't matter. It's a graciously Taoist view. But maybe it's more mature than mine. It's certainly more welcoming and serene.

Pluto. If the idea of this planet and all its metaphorical meanings, all the things it symbolizes out in the real world, don't cause the hair to ripple on the back of your neck and an inward shudder to pass through the core of your body like a sudden gust of frigid wind, well, then you don't know it like I do.
People fuss about Saturn ... with its limitations, delays, disappointments, denials, and requirements for "structure." But, I promise you, Saturn is a mild pothole on life's highway compared to the head-on collision Pluto often represents. Even the good aspects of this planet can send significant tremors of change and adjustment through your world. The challenging aspects can represent those heart-stopping moments when life shifts on its axis, and from that moment on, nothing is -- or can be -- the same.

Pluto ... Ruler of Scorpio, Lord of Transition
The Power to Rock Your World
The planet Pluto, so the news is told, was discovered by accident ... in a world where "accidents" are more mythical than the Lord of the Underworld himself.
Twenty-two year old astronomer Clyde Tombaugh was actually on a wild goose chase when it happened, unaware, of course, that his whole mission was based on a mistake -- or that he was about to step into history. He was studying photographs of the night sky over Arizona, pictures taken nearly a month before, searching for an elusive Planet X whose existence was believed to explain discrepancies in the predicted orbit of Neptune.

Planets in Retrograde

Rebecca BrentsPluto. If you know anything at all about the symbolism of this strange, erratic, controversial planet (which some scientists don't consider a planet at all, and other scientists consider part of a double planet set along with its own Moon, Charon, with whom it shares an atmosphere), you know it represents situations and experiences that deserve more than passing respect.
Astrologers accept that Pluto is a planet -- and that its influence is significant enough to be included in the interpretation and energy of a person's natal chart. Given what its energy can do ... and what it represents, it's folly for sure to argue with that conclusion. Pluto, named for the dark Roman god of the Underworld, Lord in the Land of the Dead, represents the awesome archetypal theme of destruction and resurrection, decay and renewal, death ... and rebirth.

Alive and Well With Pluto: Transits of Power and Renewal

It's not something you're going to notice much, but just to keep you up to date, Pluto ... now in retrograde since the 2nd of April, has dipped back into Sagittarius for a few finishing touches on the "renovation of your philosophical foundations." The reason you won't notice much ... well, two reasons actually ... one is that when these slow-moving outer planets change signs, it takes them a little while to get settled into their new accommodations, change costumes, scope out the changed landscape ... and get busy on the new direction of life's drama they're about to launch.
Many, many things change during the 7 - 15 years that mark the current times of transit with these slow-moving planets and the business of adjustment they bring. But there is a deceptive subtlety about this work -- even when volatile Uranus (the King of fast changes and quick surprises) is the actor onstage. You can go through long periods where not much happens -- except your ideas are changing, and your values, and some of the interests and ambitions that are taking hold of you and your attention. But because this is all very quiet -- even "underground" in many ways -- and because it often doesn't seem all that important at first ... you really don't see the life-changing moment it really represents.

There is even some debate about whether it qualifies as a bona fide planet. In fact, recently, under some very dicey astrological aspects, scientists stripped Pluto of its "planet" status in one of the most peculiar head-in-the-sand throw-back decisions I've seen since Bush was re-elected.

Karmic astrologers consider Pluto to be a significant karmic indicator, representing among other things what you may need to lose and rebuild -- and thus learn to value or express or deal with better (as shown by difficult or challenging aspects between Pluto and other planetary placements) ... and what you have chosen to help improve as an ongoing contribution of yourself -- to advance the quality of life and make progress on in this incarnation (as shown by constructive, beneficial aspects between Pluto and other planetary placements.)
Because of Pluto's extraordinarily elliptical orbit, the time it spends in each of the signs is variable -- with a tenure of 12 years in Scorpio at one end of the spectrum and more than 30 years in Taurus at the other. Pluto's position by sign tells the qualities a person will use in accomplishing the "destruction and rebuilding" work of Pluto as a member of his generation. -- with the social implications of this placement being notably more distinctive than its meaning in an ordinary chart.

Transformation, Regeneration and Rebirth
Scientists fired Pluto from our solar system last week. Actually, downsizing Pluto to "dwarf planet" status is a faux pas when considering political correctness. Demoted because of size goes against everything we, as a nation, stand for. The problems with this unexpected turn of events are farther reaching than most people are aware.

Pluto Retrograde in Capricorn
April 4 through September 11 2009
Transiting Pluto -- both direct and retrograde -- depicts the loooooong-term process of tearing down and improving things that are worn out, exhausted, inappropriate, obsolete, ineffective and falling into ruin.
Pluto stays in a sign anywhere from 12 to 36 years. It will be in Capricorn about 16 years all told. The cultural, social, political and personal life changes that unfold under its tenure move at a slow, relentless pace. Changes are sometimes protracted ... imperceptible ... as tension builds and builds (like that along the geological fault lines in earthquake country), and then a riotous convulsion leaves behind a completely altered landscape.

And the harsh aspects we'll face
to this transit in the coming years
Currently, Mars in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn
Today, Mars, newly arrived in Aries, comes square to Pluto, finally in Capricorn to stay a while. The last time this combination strolled onstage was in the 1760s and 70s. Yes, the years of growing discontent in the American colonies that finally erupted in the Revolutionary war. In fact the most recent time Mars in Aries squared Pluto in Capricorn was around the 20th of April, 1776 -- literally within shouting distance of July 4 and the birth of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson formally began writing that document in June.
So, with a new climate of political change and unrest frothing away in the innards of government now (and yes, again!!), it will be interesting to see what the hard aspects between these two foretell in the dozen-plus years of Pluto's saunter through Capricorn that lie ahead of us now.
