The Tarot and Many Layers of Meaning
When the cards mean something
... and something else ... and something else again

The Tarot operates on many levels. I've written that line before -- and undoubtedly will many times again. As someone who, in my younger years, really liked cut-and-dried answers, right and wrong solutions and perspectives, this fact bothered me a lot when I first met it. My education and background had pounded into me that there were always right and wrong answers to questions -- and problems. My personality had come to crave that kind of safety.

That Tarot, in its dogged fashion, continued to present me with different views, alternative options, an insistence that life was almost never black-and-white. Life, these cards insisted, was much more complex than that.

That Deck of Tarot Cards
Another tool to use in your quest
for self-understanding

Tarot cards can, indeed, reveal hidden truths and probabilities about an issue or a problem and forecast unfolding events and experiences, often with eerie accuracy. But they are not some bizarre bit of sorcery or weird fortune-telling device.

They work by helping to open a channel into the subconscious mind of the reader who is interpreting the story the cards depict – or the querent, the person asking the question. They work by helping the questioner find his own answers, intuitively. And, through what I believe is the process of synchronicity, the various combinations of cards in a pattern (or layout or spread) describe the most probable path of reality certain events are likely to take.

Tarot Plain & Simple
By
Anthony Louis
Learning to interpret the Tarot, and then working with it regularly, is one way many spiritual seekers establish (and maintain) their connection to the mystical world with its miraculous connections into the vast reservoirs of subconscious wisdom and the literal creation of physical reality.

Each card's meaning, the concerns it represents, the images it suggests, the thoughts it can provoke in the mind of a reader, and the paths of inquiry it opens for the mystical student to explore are fascinating, multi-layered, rich with texture and nuance -- and full of profound, even life-altering, possibilities.

A Magical Course in Tarot: Reading the Cards in a Whole New Way
By
Michele Morgan, Rebecca Richards
As a student ... and as a novice reader, this phenomenon was the most puzzling, discouraging and infuriating part of the process for me to deal with. It does happen this way sometimes ... and only through keeping written records of my own questions and experiences through the years -- along with the Tarot's responses, even at their most obscure and baffling was I able to see the pattern of what seems to be happening here.

So, what's going on when a Tarot reading seems to miss the mark, or worse, not address the question at all. What's the "message" when you ask about money ... and the reading comes back full of cups or Major Arcana, and none of the cards address wealth and finances?

Mary K. Greer's 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card

A clarification card offers "one last little bit" of information about the overall theme and direction of a reading. It is used to focus, condense, and solidify the direction of information that might otherwise be ambiguous, confusing, or open to more than one interpretation.

It will often provide a piece of wise advice about how to approach or work with the energy of a reading's message. It will often also distill the theme of a reading down to its basic essentials, and provide information on "What's really happening here."

The Tarot through Time
A Puzzling Past ... A Contemporary Tool

Who created the Tarot ... and when ... and why? You can find a lot of answers to that question. Some silly. Some hotly contested. Some, no doubt, utterly wrong. Somewhere in the mish-mash, probably, lie the few grains of knowledge and truth we still have about those answers. It strikes me as ironic that the Tarot itself is a tool for divining answers ... and is itself shrouded in such mystery. Fitting, somehow.

The History and Mystery of the Tarot

Much of the early history of the Tarot remains unclear and is often controversial. Stories associated with the origins of the Tarot are often fanciful, romantic ... and wrong -- or at least unprovable.

In my travels I've seen the usual references to gypsies ... which the Tarot's pop culture reputation certainly keeps alive. But I've also seen speculation about possible origins in ancient Egypt ... or in the help-me-keep-my-sanity project of a snowbound monk, trapped and alone in the Italian Alps.

Rods (which correspond to the suit of Clubs) -- and depending on the specific Tarot are also depicted and named as staves, wands, batons, and scepters. Rods focus on issues of personal ambition, professional goals, public reputation, individual vision and destiny, matters of self-confidence, courage, charisma, pride, and initiative.

The Tarot
Where Do You Begin?

First of all, the Tarot is broken into two (or arguably three) different sections.

The Major Arcana of the Tarot contains the archetypal symbols (vast transpersonal and spiritual patterns that underlie and support human growth, behavior, perspectives and experience) that are found in the lore and religious underpinnings of every known culture.

The Major Arcana tells the story of the Fool's Journey ... or the Hero's Journey ... from his moment of embarking on life's grand adventure through the stages of initiation and evolution that will lead him finally to a pinnacle of success and wisdom ... from which he may begin the process again at a more sophistical level of knowledge and with more complex challenges on the path he travels.

What Is the Tarot?

Tell Me About the TarotThis is a very complex question -- whose answer is often controversial. I will keep this answer brief, simple and factually correct, but I invite those who are interested in more information on the history of the Tarot to research it either in libraries or online yourself.
