The Company You Keep

A visitor to The Old Curiosity Stop asks:

On the subject of compatibility questions... I was intrigued by sun & moon signs affecting choices of a mate or friends, but I have noticed that as the years go by...the patterns of the people around me change. Now, for instance, I am surrounded by Gemini sun signs, when 20 years ago that only applied to my mate. And I can 'feel' another shift coming. So, my long-winded question is, is the choice of companions also affected by other factors like solar return, etc? Do the patterns change over time for most people, and are the patterns predictable?

The curator answers:

I had to think about this one for a while. "Traditional" astrology talks about the unusual attraction between people with the Moon in the other person's Sun sign or with Moons in the same sign. "On paper" this gives them a natural affinity for one another because their habits and possibly their family backgrounds should be compatible. The Moon person should automatically understand and appreciate the qualities and modus operandi that come naturally to the Sun person. That kind of ease in any relationship is an obvious benefit.

But in practice ... which is where we all have to live and where astrology or any occult discipline has to have solid footing for me (!!) ... I find this happening a lot less than the texts would indicate I should expect. In fact, it's so rare it's kind of a surprise when I do find a pattern between people that "fits the mold."

Like you, I see the patterns of people around me change ... often in response to things I need to emphasize in myself and my way of handling life at the time. I have no earth signs in my chart, for example, but I am surrounded by family members with Moons in earth signs.

My father has his Moon in Capricorn. My other three family-of-origin members have their Moons in Taurus. My first husband also had the Moon in Capricorn (the only earth sign planet between the two of us!!). My present husband has his Moon in Virgo conjunct Saturn and Mercury in Virgo -- an earth sign combination in spades!!. The man I considered marrying before I married the first time had his Moon in Virgo conjunct two more planets in Virgo. There is simply no way this could all be a coincidence.

There was a time in my life where it seemed like every single man who asked me on a date was a Virgo. That was more than 35 years ago, after a tumultuous time that involved college and family changes ... and in retrospect it seems they were modeling for me the wisdom and strategies needed for "taking care of life's routine business" and making healthy lifestyle choices. Not knowing much about astrology (or life itself) at the time, I didn't make much connection beyond the eerie coincidence of the Virgo Sun Sign commonality. Now, of course, it makes a bit more sense to me.

There was another time in the more recent past where I was surrounded by people with Scorpio Moons. And I mean everybody The man I was dating. My Tarot teacher. My housekeeper. My hairdresser. My lawyer. The person who owned the health food store where I shopped. Even the kid who did maintenance chores around the house.

And then I married my present husband who has his Leo Sun conjunct Pluto (which rules Scorpio) ... and that cluster of Virgo planets in his 8th House -- the natural Scorpio house. Again, this simply cannot be coincidence. They were teaching me how to rebuild my life after a time of catastrophic destruction ... and how to survive after a calamitous turning point.

So I agree this is the sort of thing that does bear attention ... if you're conscious enough to look for the clues about what life is trying to teach you -- or do for you at any particular moment. If one common sign signature becomes this prominent ... you kind of have to look at what this sign has as its best strengths, its natural interests, the example it can provide ... and see what it's trying to show you about life. (Sometimes, as I've suggested, the message is extremely comforting. As in the case of all these Scorpios, I think I was being told "You will survive this, and it will be better someday.")

Possibly your being so inundated with Geminis now is a signal to dabble in a lot of things, collect bunches of information on many different topics, keep an open mind, nourish your curiosity, use your intellect for entertainment and education, be aware of your opinions and views -- and don't be afraid of holding contradictory views on topics that seem to warrant that. Be flexible in your thinking ... but go for breadth instead of depth for a while ... and become kind of "jack of all trades" in your view of life and intellectual interests.

Geminis are clever, communicative, versatile, and inventive. They love words. They love ideas. They love finding out what other people know -- and telling them a thing or two from their own stockpiles of information. So apparently life is ready for you to become an intellectual gypsy for a while ... and develop some wide-ranging interests in order to broaden your horizons and maybe show you new paths to eventually building a deeper expertise -- perhaps along lines you have yet to discover.

I've not really looked at the possibility that the other people in your life are affected by Solar Return energy ... although that could very well be true. I don't know that the patterns are necessarily predictable except in terms of the "cosmic messages" I've described as examples in this answer. But from this very small sample of my own experience (and those of others I've not noted here in writing) and now your own, I'd say that this "clustering" of energy at certain times could be both very real and very significant.

It's certainly something I'd watch in my own life. (I've been getting an awful lot of Scorpio clients lately ... and with Pluto, ruler of Scorpio, sitting smack on my Ascendant presently, this could indeed be a signal of "things to come.") I'd certainly encourage you to watch it in yours ... and pay attention as I've described. With Gemini energy driving the train of your experience presently ... you may find yourself deluged daily with messages of all kinds and from every direction. It'll be interesting (for you, I'm sure!!) to see how it all pans out.

One last question from me comes to mind. If you "feel" another shift coming -- as you've indicated -- do you have any idea where it's going or the energy it may be looking to magnetize next in your world? Those kinds of clues could be invaluable!!
