The Mother You Had ...
And the Mother You Needed

A visitor to the Old Curiosity Stop asks:

If you recognize that when younger there was a 'lack' of attention, support, tenderness, touch, emotion from your mother...not her fault, just the 'way things were' in her life and the woman before her...and you know you have issues of 'enough is never enough'...and you know that needs to be changed, and the cards say to 'let go' of that part of your life...easier said than done...I've done 'reading' on it...but it's a 'feeling' that's there, and I don't know how to just 'stop' it...let go...other than to recognize it and just let it hurt itself away? Any advice?

The curator answers ...

This is always a tough problem ... and it's certainly a common one. Sometimes we're stuck with the (often unacknowledged) reality that our mothers were simply too young or too immature to be the kind of parents we needed at the time we were their responsibility.

Speaking from experience, I know that the woman I was in my 40's was far wiser, more "together," more sensitive, more affluent ... simply able to be a better mother to an infant and young child than the woman I was in my 20's and early 30's. In some ways, that is ... as you phrased it, "just the way life is." But intellectually recognizing that doesn't solve your problem ... because you -- the now adult child -- are still left with the unsatisfied feelings of deficit and lack.

And I understand, too, how advice to just "let it go" misses the mark. It isn't terribly helpful to be told to do something that ... were it easy, you'd have figured it out for yourself and done it ages back ... and not be told how to go get the job done.

Many issues of healing and forgiveness run into the same obstacle. If you could just let it go, it wouldn't be a problem. But it is a problem ... and compounding the insult by making you the one implicitly "causing" the problem because you can't "get over it" ... seems almost sadistic. So, let's look at ways to take power back ... and put control into your hands, rather than asking you to do what seems like just further victimization of yourself -- which I admit, "shrugging it off and letting it go" feels like for a lot of us. (Me included.)

The strategies that seem to hold the most promise may sound, I admit, a little weird to the "sane and sober" left-brained folks. They sounded weird to the sane and sober side of me when I first encountered them. But in the last decade, I've learned to have profound respect for "what works" ... no matter how little I understand the mechanisms of why it works.
