Teach Values to Your Kids
by Mark Brandenburg, MA, CPCC

1. Tell them your life stories and teach through your stories.

This beats lecturing any day.

2. Have frequent conversations about values in your household.

This lets your kids know that it's really important.

3. Pay attention to whom you and your kids are hanging out with.

This culture will have an impact on your kids; stay aware of what's happening here.

4. Expose your kids to some sort of religion or faith.

It seems especially important today that they know they're not alone.

5. Read them fairy tales when they're younger.

These stories always bring up great opportunities for dialogues about values.

6. Look for teachable moments but don't push too hard.

Ask them questions about what they're feeling and don't do too much correcting. They'll figure it out if you just listen.

7. Substitute arts, activities, or helping others for watching TV or playing video games.

Don't allow popular culture to compete with your own values.

8. Live your own life according to your values.

If you can't live your values, it will be less likely your kids will.

9. Give your kids more responsibility from an early age.

Kids who are responsible from early on are more likely to understand and live their values.

10. Have very high expectations for your kids' value systems.

They'll tend to live up to your expectations.
