Getting divorced is hard for parents, but even harder for kids. Try these tips to help be a better parent before, during and after your divorce.

1. Remember YOU are the adult.

Don't use your child as a sounding board or someone to vent to. Find friends, a coach, a therapist - an adult to talk to. Keep adult things adult. Children shouldn't know the details of your separation, alimony, child support. Let them be children and help them to feel safe, well loved and protected by you both.

2. Don't criticize your former spouse to your children.

We all know this but it's very easy to make little comments, roll your eyes and otherwise let your animosity out. Don't do it!! Every time you criticize their other parent you hurt them. Half their DNA is this other person, you criticize them, and you also criticize your child.

3. Practice Self Care - BUT.... don't forget about your kids.

It's very important to take great care of yourself, but make sure you don't leave your kids out. Too often children are left on their own too much while parents are off finding themselves. They didn't ask for this change in their family, it's imperative to make their needs a priority.

4. Be an example.

You have a chance to show your children that when the going gets tough that you work through it. They will look to you for how you are handling things. Be a role model for not being a victim, for taking responsibility for your life and taking charge.

5. Don't shower them with gifts.

It's often the parent that the children don't live with that turns in to a Disney Parent. Every visit is filled with exciting activities and presents. They want YOU, not things. Don't try to buy your guilt away. Plan fun things, but also know that just hanging with you and building Legos, baking cookies, just being is special.

6. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

So often when we get divorced we only remember the pain and hurt. It's important for kids to hear about and remember the fun you all had as a family. It's important for them to know that they came from parents who did love one another at one time.

7. Keep routines as much as possible.

With so many aspects of their lives changing it's important to know that some things stay the same. As much as possible have dinners together, keep bedtime routines and any other things that you did before. It was reassuring to my children to still have dinner at the same old table, eat the same dinners I always made and just know that even though their dad wasn't living here that their lives were the same in many ways.

8. Be responsible.

Don't bring a parade of dates through your home. Everyone has their own values but I for one don't think it's appropriate to have dates sleep over. You are teaching your children by your actions - how do you want them to behave when they start dating?

9. Be aware.

Keep a watchful eye for changes in behavior with your children. If they seem to be having a hard time seek professional help. Often it's very helpful to have someone neutral to talk with. They don't want to hurt you so they might not always tell you how they are feeling. Sometimes just a couple of visits to a counselor can make a huge difference.

10. Remember, you are still a family.

It's easy to feel that you are in this never never land surrounded by intact families. You are certainly not alone, and you are very much still a family. It may look different from before, but it is not less special and vital.
