6. When you are certain that you are calm and are coming from a place of love and compassion, to the best of your ability, make the call.

Hold off on calling until you can achieve this state of serenity.

7. Start out by telling them, from your heart, a thing or two that you really appreciate about them or what they do.

For instance, I told my mom that I really appreciate knowing that she always thinks about us and is quick to come when I ask her to visit and help out with caring for our toddler and giving my husband and me "date night" opportunities.

Next, tell them what you need from them and get specific.

For instance, I said something like this: "However, I request that you respect my boundaries. If you can't say something nice (provide positive support) please don't say anything at all. Personally, I tend to shut down, get angry and resentful when I hear negative opinions or judgments about me or how I do things. I would prefer it if WE would instead ... (refer back to your list from Step #4 above).

9. Assure them that you want to maintain a positive rapport with them and that striving to keep communications clear and boundaries in place is essential.

Remember, you are being guided by your ideal relationship and Higher Power on this one.

10. Ask for their agreement and state a consequence if they can't agree or accept you on your terms.

Simply saying something like "If you can't abide by this, maybe we need some time." Or "... I will leave the room/ house." Or "... I will ask you to leave" are other stronger alternatives. Find one that you can imagine yourself living with and be ready to implement if need be!

You deserve to have and enjoy healthy and happy relationships, no matter what! Start showing people today how you want to be treated. Why wait? Tomorrow, it'll just get harder and more complicated.

Setting a boundary the same day one has been breached is the most potent, loving thing you can do, for all parties concerned. And, besides, what a great example you'll set for your own children or people around you!
