Ways to Lovingly Set a Boundary With Your Mother or Someone Else

You're an adult and you still get stumped when your mother or someone you love tells you what they REALLY think about you, your life, your job, or your way of doing things. And you hadn't even asked for their opinion!

It hurts. Makes you angry. But you're afraid to respond the way you really want to because you don't want to hurt HER feelings. So you just take it and smolder.

Maybe today's the day to do things differently. Try this on for size and see if you don't end up liking YOURSELF a whole lot more when you're done! And you won't have to sit and lick your wounds after all. How good would THAT feel?!

1. Vent to a trusted friend (or to another third party like your coach, therapist, or support group).

Give them the gory details. Now, tell this friend what you REALLY want to say to the person who offended you. Practice saying it out loud with feeling, but not to the offending party directly. Not yet at least!

2. Bookend: Tell your trusted friend that you intend to call or contact the offending party later today.

Commit to calling your friend afterwards to report in. Or go to a support group meeting before/after and tell the group your intentions and then the results.

3. Next, do what you need to do to calm yourself down.

Get centered. Light a candle, say a prayer, put on some soothing music, or go outside to a park or some quiet safe place.

4. Picture yourself in an unconditionally loving relationship with this person.

What does that look like, feel like, sound like, seem like to you? Get specific. Write down all the things that go on in this ideal relationship. My list includes things like not using the word "should," supporting each other by saying things like "I appreciate how you ..." or "I am grateful that you ..."

We speak for ourselves and share our experience, strength and hope. We don't judge one another. We embrace our own imperfections and allow other people theirs. We set boundaries with love and ask that they be respected. You get the picture?

5. Pray or meditate on the idea that the Universe (your Higher Power, God, Goddess, Spirit, whatever you like) supports you and wants you to enjoy healthy, happy, and supportive relationships.

If this is hard to accept, pray for the willingness to accept this idea, at least long enough for you to make your call today.
