We become the victim of our own failings. These failings can include being too critical, judgmental, inquiring or an unwillingness to peacefully co-exist within a group we must interact with. Sometimes it's good to take a step back from your situation and look at yourself in the mirror. If you don't like what you see, take a positive step beyond who you are and try to be someone better.

If you're not the problem, someone else is. Interaction with in-laws and relatives can be a real nightmare when they seem out to get you. Life often throws people in our face who we simply can't stand. Everything they say or do seems to be a challenge to us. How do we handle that kind of a situation? In the end, it's all about People Skills.

Those who seem bent on testing us require special attention. You cannot be cordial with them and must be on your guard at all times. That means knowing when to speak, remain quiet or respond in a way that will not provoke them further. These are things that you will have to learn by observation. Watch how others respond to their challenges. Learn from their mistakes and triumphs. If all else fails, simply walk away and stay away.

Most people who have trouble with relatives or in-laws make the mistake of using confrontation as a means of trying to solve such problems. This often gives the trouble makers even more ammo to shoot at you within the family circle. You become the problem, not them.

Positive communication is a better way. Choose the most reasonable party in the other camp and try discussing the situation with them. If that fails, it's time to abandon ship as far as communication and interaction goes. No one has the right to continually harass you, not even in the name of family unity.

Can't we all just get along? Not always! But before you allow yourself to be driven crazy by annoying relatives or in-laws, just remember what my Mom used to say about such people: "But for the grace of God, there go I!" And who am I to argue with Mom?
