Here are some suggestions:
Don™t try to do it all alone. Get family or friends to help and become involved with the children. Let them provide entertainment and support which growing boys and girls need . If you can have someone take them for dinner or have them overnight, you can recharge your batteries and get some spark back.
Make sure you spend individual time with each child you have. It is more important than gold . You are showing that no matter how stressed or busy you are, your child is more important than anything else. Let your child know he or she is loved.
Join a group for single parents and you will see that you are not alone in the rocky boat. Listen to what others say they do to handle all the responsibility. Get tips on dealing with teen problems that have worked for others and vent your frustration at doing this all alone.
Once a week have a family pow wow time. Everybody talks about his or her feelings and problems which have cropped up. Keep the communication flowing. It™s when you don™t talk that bad things happen.
DO NOT get your children involved with people you date unless you think this will turn out to be permanent. Remember, the first person you date will probably not be the one you commit to. Don™t expose your children to the trauma of people coming through a revolving door. Children tend to try to start a relationship and then are very hurt when that person leaves. Children want things to be part of a normal home routine. They will naturally expect you to include any new person into this routine.
Try not to bad mouth the father who is absent. It will only make your child feel abandoned and bitter.
Get counseling you may need. There is bound to be stress when you are trying to do the job of two people. Read books on stress reduction. If there are specific problems with a stage your child is going through, get expert help. Better that than let things just evolve and they will, usually badly.
Every day look in the mirror and give yourself credit for doing two jobs and handling them well. You are doing a good job despite whatever pressures and stresses have been placed on your shoulder. Remember, you are a person, too. Not just a mom. Take care of yourself and don™t feel selfish when you enjoy little treats for yourself. You deserve it.
