Of course there's more to Feng Shui than personal likes and dislikes and yin and yang energy. Chi has infinite expressions ... and can be further directed, focused, and regulated by application of the five elements that are the building blocks of Oriental thought. In the West, we consider the elements of Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. In the East, the elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
Some combination of these make up the components of every physical thing in the world. And these, too, play a part in achieving the balance and comfort we want in our lives, our surroundings, and, by extension, in ourselves.
In addition to the raw elements per se, our surroundings contain items composed of these elements, things that symbolize these elements, art whose aesthetics contain these elements, and things that abstractly draw on the qualities of these elements -- such as color or shape.
