This week I made $1000 by clearing out our closet. This is how it happened. Our closet is the main clutter challenge in our bedroom and I decided we needed one of those custom made closet organizer systems that look so good in the magazine ads. I phoned up, got a rough quote and arranged a time for them to come around. Then I thought I should really clear out the closet before they came.

I took everything out and then only put back clothes I love and feel good in. I persuaded my husband do the same. This is something I do every 2-3 months and I always end up taking a bag of clothes to the charity shop. I think our clothes multiply when we're not looking!

By the time I finished, there was so much space in our closet that it was obvious we didn't need it organized to create more. I cancelled the appointment for the organizer system and saved $1000. I now know that whenever it gets full its time to declutter.

Your bedroom is of primary importance as it's where you spend a lot of time. How does yours look and feel? What are you living with for so much of your life? The answer will probably reflect something going on in your relationship life right now.

During a consultation, the first thing I noticed in a client's bedroom was a photo of her and her husband on the dresser. The glass had cracked across her husband's face. She told me it had broken when they moved in 7 years ago!

I didn't need her to tell me she and her husband had grown distant. She replaced the glass, and the next time I spoke to her they had just returned from a rare few days away without the children. When I asked how it was, she started singing the song "Getting to know you?.

Sometimes making the smallest adjustments can have huge results. The things you surround yourself with in your home reflect who you are and at the same time create who you are. This could be a scary thought, except that your environment is one of the aspects of your life you have the greatest control over. By making adjustments in your environment you can affect subconscious beliefs.

Your environment doesn't lie. Take a look around your bedroom as if seeing it for the first time.

1. What does it say about the person who lives here?

2. What does it say about your relationship life?

3. Is it saying what you want it to say?

4. What doesn't feel right?

5. What do you like, and what don't you like?

6. How do the colors feel?

7. Where is the clutter?

8. Does it feel chaotic or peaceful?

9. Do you have pictures of solitary figures on your walls, when you would really like to be in a relationship?

10. What is one thing you could do so your bedroom accurately reflects the relationship life you would like?
