As in the real world, location is vital in the world of Feng Shui. When most people talk about location, they usually mean a place "in a nice part of town," away from slums and crime, close to shopping and schools, with good street access, quiet neighborhoods, and sporting other conveniences of urban life. Often what supplies this is a Western city is not what Feng Shui principles have in mind.

An ideal Feng Shui location, as I mentioned last month, places the living environment, whether it be a village, a neighborhood, or an individual home itself in a carefully chosen place whose features suggest an armchair. Practitioners of Feng Shui call this the lap or belly of the dragon -- Orientals having such an affection and affinity for dragons, you know.

The most classically benevolent Feng Shui location is on the gentle downward slope of a mountain or substantial hill, where the ground levels out to an even plane. The prominent bulk of the mountain protects its back, while gentle curves of land or trees encircle either side ... exactly like the shape of an armchair. Toward the front, on a slightly lower level, is a water feature -- a pond, a stream, a river, a lake. (I'm not sure a drainage ditch qualifies, which is what I have in front of my home, and only when it rains. Which it doesn't. Much..)
