Some schools of feng shui teach about alignments with different directions of the compass and the notion that each compass direction holds strengths and weaknesses for each of the five basic elements. For instance, the south is associated with fire element -- and enhancing fire symbols and energy in this part of your home or property strengthens fire's positive influence in your life.
Since fire is associated with reputation, fame, and recognition ... your career could benefit from feng shui attention in the south of your home or office, especially if public acclaim and honor are important to your professional progress -- and bank account. Using symbols and colors that support fire's positive attributes is simple way to boost this area of your life, often with just a few one-time efforts, little expense (unless you really want to go all-out here), and the patience to let the automatic effects of time and chi management "do the work for you."
When you put it that way ... it sounds like a no-brainer. Fire element is associated with the color red, and with powerful symbols of yang energy -- such as bright lights, candles (obviously, and tall, pointy, angular accessories. Also, since wood element "feeds" fire, touches of wood symbols -- like living plants or carved wood art -- are helpful here. Earth element, on the other hand, smothers fire ... and so would weaken fire's power to bring positive energy to the fame area of the South. Earth element is contained in things like earthen colors, rocks, and clay pottery.
