The Western Guide to Feng Shui: Creating Balance, Harmony, and Prosperity in Your Environment
By
Terah Kathryn Collins
It's hard to explain feng shui in a few words and do it justice. It's a complex notion, a system of thought, that has been developed by the Chinese culture for centuries. If you study it a while, and practice it, feng shui affects the way you look at life and the way you think. It thus affects your way of being in the world -- and who you eventually become. I suppose you can say that about many things. We are all products of our history, but with feng shui and its clear philosophical components, the connection is distinct.

On one level, feng shui is about placement and design. Your physical surroundings both affect and reflect who you are -- especially who you are inside. And so in a kind of chicken-and-egg paradox, feng shui holds that changing the design of your surroundings, moving or placing items with conscious intent in the rooms where you work and live, and adjusting the structure of your environment -- whether at home, on the job, or even while staying in a hotel room on business, you affect the energy around you and the kind of experiences you attract.

There's an almost magical aura about feng shui, its promises and its results. I say "almost" ... because the magic is certainly there in the changes you can produce. But the question remains -- at least in my mind, did this come from the energy in the objects you used and the placement strategies? Or did it come from the power of your thought, vision and determination to make something happen -- to bring that experience into reality? I can buy both explanations. And maybe the answer is not one or the other, but both.

So for me the question remains. And the paradox. And yet, ultimately, if results are what really count, does an explanation of how the magic happens really matter -- as long as it's reliable? That is part of the paradox. I did not used to be so comfortable with paradox. I wanted clear, clean, logical answers -- steps to follow, methods I could understand and file away -- and sometimes teach to others.

But now, for me, questions can exist without final answers. Incongruities can live peacefully side by side. I can watch and wonder ... and not rush to explain, dissect, and find tidy wrapped-up-with-a-ribbon answers ... to these questions anyhow. As I said, feng shui if you work with it, experience it, embrace it ... will change you. I offer myself as proof.

All kinds of bright objects such as glass, mirrors, crystals and anything with a reflective surface can be used to bring light into dark spaces. Corners are particularly important as they tend to trap and stagnate energy, just like an eddy in a stream. The light will keep that energy flowing.
