Trauma is one of the main experiences that cause a person to split off, disown, and lock down parts of his personality into what eventually becomes the dark, inaccessible parts of his Shadow. If something in him "caused" the trauma, or aggravated it, or perpetuated it, that set of qualities becomes a fine candidate for him to shove away from him, out of sight, where it "won't cause trouble like that again."

This seems like a workable tactic. But it's not. Energy doesn't just "go away" and disappear simply because it is ordered offstage. Repressed, in fact, it becomes even more dangerous.
