Western medicine has accomplished miracles. Ok, our doctors can't yet cure the common cold ... but they've eliminated polio as a childhood summertime scourge. They've eradicated smallpox from the earth except in laboratories. They can deal with bubonic plague -- which in the Middle Ages wiped out a major chunk of the world's people. They replace limbs ... and hearts. They can perform surgery on fetuses still unborn. And they can clone whole new animals -- creating life in ways once reserved to God.

As a group, through the years they've developed a view of their craft and its myriad possibilities that placed them light years beyond the tinkerings of the old white-haired country doctor a century ago. This has led Western medicine into a philosophical perspective that focuses on minutiae, details, cause-and-effect, and compartmentalization to handle the vast amounts of knowledge thus produced.

You virtually never just go to a doctor any more. You go to a specialist. And because s/he has a whole lotta knowledge about only one area ... you may wind up going to four or five specialists to treat the many facets of one complex problem. Arguably, this is necessary.

Already, it's simply impossible for one mind to contain all the available knowledge about even very narrow specialties. The raw material of expertise is just too vast -- and frankly I don't know how we will solve the obvious problems this presents as the amount of data continues to expand.
