Part 1 of this article discussed the Western view of medicine as it has evolved especially over the past century, with doctors increasingly assuming the role of "mechanic" ... and the human body being viewed as a machine, with different systems, areas of specialty, emphasis on treating specific symptoms, and, most importantly, the concept of "interchangeable parts" -- which has become commonplace now with the arrival of organ transplants as standard medical practice.

Obviously, this mindset creates a certain "culture" in which Western medical thought exists ... and may influence even the way medical research itself is conducted. It may seem dehumanizing (to say the least!!) to view ill and suffering patients in this way, but there is no denying many worthwhile and even miraculous results have come from this approach. Lives are extended, quality of lives are enhanced, and people are helped daily by the advantages of Western medicine, its knowledge, and applications.
