Anyone who has ever undergone a battery of medical "tests" to determine information his doctor deemed necessary to his diagnosis and treatment knows (and probably remembers with a shudder) the expensive, dehumanizing, intimidating, infuriating, and often painful and humiliating process that only seems to focus on fluids, samples, biopsies, X-rays, and such.

Your body becomes a thing to be manipulated, examined, sometimes dissected, evaluated, and judged -- often in ways involving microscopes, in places far removed from you physically ... and by people on whose opinion, for better or worse, your future suddenly depends. The arrival at a verdict can be as grueling, exhausting, and cruel as anything the legal system could inflict on the worst of criminals. Sometimes even the pronouncement of doom is part of the mix.

By contrast, in her own fashion, the Oriental doctor is like Sherlock Holmes on the trail of solving a mystery in that at least she does her own work. Emphasis here is on one's training to be a keen observer of the patient sitting in front of her, not on the squiggling arcana of lab reports.
