Earlier this year, my friend and a frequent contributor to both my Inbox and items here in The Enchanted Sprite, Patrick Shaginaw, ended a year long bout of Immunotherapy, with a drug named Interferon, for malignant melanoma with the best possible news: He is officially in remission.

Patrick, known as Papashag to his friends and e-mail pals, passed the ordeal of this year's experience and breath-holding uncertainty with humor, candor, courage, and grace under pressure that would have made Hemingway proud. He never flinched from admitting the toll the Immunotherapy was taking on him physically, mentally, and emotionally ... but he also generously acknowledged the support and importance of friends who kept in touch, e-mailed things to keep his spirits up, and prayed right alongside him for the outcome that has resulted.

In the beginning, when his diagnosis was still fresh, he said he wanted to be able to let other people know about this speedbump of sobering reality in his life, to remind them of the importance of check-ups and vigilance and the dangers of complacency. Now that we can all breathe a little easier for him ... to say nothing of Patrick's transformed outlook (!!!) ... this article, and these pages, which he himself has helped to construct, aim to further that intent.

Malignant melanoma is a form of skin cancer which is paradoxically highly curable if caught early and deadly vicious in the later stages. The high incidence of this cancer in sun-loving states where "a fabulous tan" is a status symbol is tragic evidence of the connection between high levels of UV rays and its later occurrence. No "look" in the world is worth what Patrick went through this last year.

So ... in support of your self-declared "mission" to tell people about this killer, Patrick, my dear ... this one's for you.
