Holistic Thoughts Regarding Cancer, in Particular Melanoma

Cancer is a disease which manifests when the immune system is defective. In my opinion, there are always multiple causes, some obvious, some more opaque and puzzling, which contribute to this breakdown.

In my practice I look at a person holistically, as a mental / emotional / physical / spiritual entity, living in an often imperfect environment, and attempt to discern where lie the imbalances. Usually it's a combination of factors.

A word of caution: New Age wisdom often has us look at cancer as something "we did wrong". I prefer to look at it as a soul choice and opportunity to balance issues from this life and possibly past lives. It is a difficult but rewarding path to self discovery.

When and if death is the conclusion, it is unfair to judge the process as a failed one. Sometimes the ultimate healing is in death.

The emotional factors contributing to cancer are complex but there usually are some issues about unexpressed grief and hatred of self or others. Certainly, in a discussion of melanoma, we need to acknowledge first of all, that there are triggering causes from genetics and sun exposure.

Emotionally, the skin is the organ we show the world. It is one of our personal, unique trademarks. Melanoma most frequently occurs first on the left side of the body. The left side of our body represents our female, intuitive side. Generally, a disease process on the left indicates that we have ignored or suppressed aspects of nurturing (ourselves or others), or creativity in our lives.

As an example, one gentleman I worked with had been in love with a woman who nurtured the psychic side of his personality. He was very intuitive and gifted. His family did not approve of this union or his abilities and he was forced to shut the abilities down, and marry someone acceptable to the family. The melanoma appeared in his fifties.

Encouraging him to acknowledge and flow with his intuitive skills certainly helped what I perceived to be a spiritual imbalance and blockage. He responded well to the conventional and holistic treatments and has been cancer-free for 2 years.

When I work with a cancer patient, I generally assist with the side effects of the conventional treatment with homeopathic remedies. In Southern California, melanoma is treated with surgery and a series of vaccinations over the course of several years. Remedies for surgical healing include Arnica Montana, Hypericum and Carbo Vegetalis. Remedies for the vaccination responses include Hypericum and Ledum.

Homeopathic treatment involves looking at each person's unique symptoms, but most frequently, the remedy Lachesis is chosen. Lachesis addresses a myriad of blue-black-red, generally left-sided, skin lesions which certainly fits the picture of melanoma.

Cancer treatment is psychologically traumatic. One of the most important things to do for the cancer patient is to address their fears and anxieties.

Flower essences, such as Rock Rose, Holly, Violet, among others, are very helpful.

Energy healing treatments, e.g., Reiki, Polarity, Healing Touch, etc., can assist the patient in connecting to the larger picture of their healing.
