Color Therapy Another Arrow in the Quiver of Alternative Health Strategies by Rebecca Brents
Color therapy will probably never replace modern medicine ... which is a pity, because procedures involving color therapy are a heck of a lot more pleasant than most procedures involving modern medicine.
However, I'll admit I'm of two minds on the subject. The Western-raised skeptic in me did for years consider this whole area of alternative medicine too flaky for credence. The wiser soul that I often am now, who has at least tried some of this stuff with an open mind (no matter how ridiculous it sounded), cannot argue with the results I've experienced first-hand with some techniques that just look and sound too weird for words.
In other articles on this site, I've noted how I scoffed at acupuncture, classified herbal medicine as a loony form of "weed-eating," and figured that most alternative health care methods were living proof that some people are dumb enough to try anything. I haven't completely changed my mind on that last point ... but what can I say? I've become at least willing to look twice and three times at ideas many rational people of my acquaintance would dismiss out of hand as "odd." Like I used to.
Yes, the whole notion of color therapy still strikes me as odd, to put it mildly. But I also believe there could be something to it, and I'm willing to be convinced by the irrefutable evidence of experience ... and by explanations of why this practice may work that are grounded in logic I've come to accept for other reasons.
With that, having put together enough of a disclaimer now for my own comfort, I want to write more ... in this and succeeding articles on the subject ... about the information offered by proponents of color therapy and why these techniques may offer another approach to therapy and healing.
I suppose the logic here is: This may be worth trying if you're interested -- or so inclined -- in addition to conventional healing methods, because at worst, it may be useless, but at best, it may offer the benefits its supporters claim.
Let's start with some fairly general beliefs and facts about colors. Almost everyone has a favorite color. When I was a kid, mine was red. Hands down, no question. Bright, fire-engine, candy-apple red. Now, take a look at my site -- and you'll see my tastes run more to purples, lavenders, and pinks. Likewise, everyone has colors that kind of leave them cold. Again, when I was a child, that color was orange. Now, it's chartreuse and olive-green.
Psychologists have shown that colors affect us ... even without our knowing it. Maybe even against our will. Entire professions hinge on dealing with colors ... from the obvious ones in art, to those in interior decorating, fashion and fabric design, cinematography, and advertising -- just to name a few.
Package designers and the suits on Madison Avenue spend a lot of effort, time, and money in the belief that consumers can be attracted, put off, and otherwise manipulated by color choices, and the "art" of product sales is a booming one. People who work with colors speak of "warm" colors and "cool" colors ... colors that enliven and colors that soothe.
There is evidence that some colors help people learn more easily and retain information longer. (And, oddly enough it is not that yucky institutional green that seemed the only paint available in schools I attended -- back at the end of the Stone Age.) And, yes, evidence is emerging that some colors encourage (and hasten) recuperation and healing.
Color is significant in our lives and in our language. We speak of being in a black mood, of seeing red, of having the blues, or being in the pink. To call someone a "colorful character" may be a left-handed compliment, but to say someone is a "colorless personality" is no compliment at all!
So, is it possible to manipulate and modify not just our moods and psychological framework, but our physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional conditions as well. Can we use color not to just enhance the aesthetics of our world, but the larger, more immediate conditions of our lives? Maybe so. And maybe it's worth investigation. The proof, of course, will be in your own experience, which is where the decision about whether something new has value always rests with me. I hope it does with you, too.
If nothing else, the fact that frequencies of light and color affect the workings of the mind makes it at least possible that they can affect physical and bodily structures as well. It is also true that absolutely everything is an energy system -- no matter what its shape, form, function, or substance. Everything is composed of energy.
One of the most important shifts we can make in our spiritual, mystical evolution and learning is the realization that we are also an energy system, from the substance of our flesh to the more refined and invisible arrangements of our thoughts and fantasies. We are energy. And energy by its very nature ... vibrates.
Protons and electrons move inside every atom that exists as part of our reality -- in inanimate objects, in living beings, in the very air we breathe and the water we drink. Nothing is really solid. Nothing is as it appears. The smallest components of everything are in constant motion.
The vibrational frequency of living things is higher, more lively, more vigorous and diverse than in inanimate matter. But the basic energy that is present in everything is still a constant presence. Hence the assertion that even rocks have consciousness ... may have validity. This is the basis for the idea of using crystals and minerals to influence our lives, our surroundings, and our personal focus.
Forms of energy can interact with other forms of energy. Sometimes this is essential to life -- such as the use of oxygen gained through the air we breathe or the assimilation of nutrients through digestion, and sometimes it is fatal ... as in the case of radiation poisoning.
Energy fields such as sound, light, electricity, heat, and electromagnetism interact with the energy in living cells in ways that are scientifically measurable. It stands to reason that if these can cause harm when improperly understood or controlled, there may be ways to turn these same resources into healing assets -- by understanding and controlling them differently.
The use of color to produce certain desired results is one possible way of achieving this. Different colors, which by definition vibrate at different frequencies, may have applications that can help stabilize, modify, or restore unbalanced physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual conditions.
One of the operating tenets of Oriental medicine, in fact, is the idea that health is restored not by killing off or destroying disease, but by creating conditions in which the causes of disease either cannot exist or which they will not "choose" to inhabit. It's a subtle but very, very interesting alternative point of view.
In an atmosphere of restored balance, we can more easily eliminate poisons, protect ourselves against the damage of negative thoughts -- from both ourselves and others, find more effective strategies through which to run our lives, and simply be stronger and more vibrant spirits ourselves -- in every way.
The idea of restoring inner balance through the application of "outer" forms of energy is the basis for many of the alternative healing therapies now available for investigation, including sound therapy, aromatherapy, flower essences, the use of stones, gems, and crystals, and one of the most readily available, most readily maneuvered sources of outside energy we have -- color.
