L-lysine is an essential amino acid. It occurs naturally as part of food protein, but the body cannot manufacture it on its own. It must be obtained either as part of your daily diet or from supplements. Vegetarians and especially vegans must take care in their diet regimens so as to not incur an L-lysine deficiency. Also, athletes involved in frequent vigorous exercise are at risk for L-lysine deficiency. Legumes such as peas, beans, and lentils are the best naturally occurring source of L-lysine.

L-lysine helps support and maintain a healthy immune system, and is especially known for its use in fighting cold sores brought on by the Herpes Simplex virus. Cold sores from the Herpes Simplex virus are often a symptom of immune system depletion and chronic stress and fatigue.

L-lysine is an antagonist of L-arginine, another amino acid whose presence in unbalanced quantities encourages ... even nourishes ... the Herpes Simplex virus and its symptoms. Supplements of L-lysine can help neutralize this imbalance. Oral doses of 300 - 1200 mg daily are said to be effective, but dosage levels as high as 9 grams a day show no toxicity and may be used in divided doses for short periods when dealing with Herpes Simplex virus outbreaks.

L-lysine is involved directly in the production of another amino acid, L-carnitine which is important in the breakdown and utilization of dietary fats. L-carnitine is a non-essential amino acid, but its presence helps regulate the storage and use of fat from the body's metabolic functions. It also converts fatty acids into energy ... and helps lower cholesterol.

L-lysine is also involved in the retention of calcium in the body, and therefore may be of special benefit to women concerned about osteoporosis ... or thinning and brittle bones, a frequent problem in the post-menopausal years. L-lysine further appears to be important in the formation of collagen, a substance vital for bones and connective tissues, including skin, cartilage, and tendons.

L-lysine deficiencies are also related to the development of kidney stones, fatigue, nausea, irritability, poor appetite, anemia, and dizziness. L-lysine also reportedly has some effectiveness in treating migraine headaches.
