At first glance, a person in need of Agrimony doesn't seem ill. He shows a personality that is cheerful, excited, enthusiastic, and without a care in the world. He is unfailingly hearty, upbeat and smiling. The aggravations of life don't seem to get to him. He seems hooked on happiness and tapped into an endless supply of positive thinking. He is pleasant, uncomplaining, often popular ... and even able to joke in the face of the misfortunes and problems that do infect his life, as they do everyone's.

But it doesn't take long for a chill to set in when you begin to realize the euphoria is a little too persistent and the bon vivant manner strangely out of touch with reality -- because this person is often facing serious problems. Or more precisely, he's not facing them at all. Agrimony deals with the psychological tactic of denial -- the refusal to objectively assess the truth or seriousness of one's circumstances.

A person in need of Agrimony glosses over and avoids solving his problems, rather than assessing and working on them constructively. He may not even admit he has problems. But his taste (and compulsive need) for alcohol and drugs indicates a deeply troubled soul behind the artificial joy.

This is a person living in terror -- and the indications that he is not is a fundamental part of the lie. He doesn't dare let the mask slip -- and is afraid to his core that it will. He often comes from a background that stressed appearances over feelings to an obsessive and unhealthy extent. He can't admit vulnerability, pain, fear, grief, or problems -- because it doesn't look good, because it's not polite, because it would put him at risk.

The biggest risk of all for him ... is to have to admit the truth. He may be at the edge of an overwhelming break-down ... but he's still wearing a smile and cracking jokes, as if that will keep the monsters out of his face for a few more seconds.

A variation on this is often seen in those who have embraced some religious cult or dogma that teaches surrender of the will, sublimation of one's thinking capacity, and thereby the attainment of ecstasy and bliss. There's a vacancy behind the eyes, and the smile is just too fixed. Far from feeling you're in the presence of a spiritual person, you realize you're facing a spiritual cypher who's babbling on about faith and trust -- while the emergencies of his life prepare to engulf him.

This is not a person consumed with bliss. He's using an anaesthesia that looks like bliss to numb himself against emotions he won't allow himself to feel. The repression of emotion and pain may be horrific to live with, but he keeps up his brave front, being the peace-maker, the hail-fellow-well-met, the life of the party, the one everybody else depends on for a laugh ... which isn't the same thing as being happy at all.
