There's not a helping soul alive who doesn't know how hard it is to say "No" to yet another request for help, support, comfort, or guidance -- even when answering this call robs us of the time, energy, and healing experiences we need to keep ourselves in decent shape. It can be extremely hard to draw the line between being a therapist, a friend, a partner, a parent, an counsellor ... and being a door mat.

But the healthy soul needs to learn the proper balance between service and selfishness ... and healing oneself in this regard can be an extremely important personal task. Exhausting yourself into illness and depression in the effort to help others really isn't what is meant by the advice to "go the extra mile." And you need to know when to draw the line. Centaury essence can help.

Often, the person who feels compelled to offer this kind of unstinting nourishment and support lacks sufficient inner solidity to maintain good boundaries ... and fails to appreciate how helping others requires a firm and solid sense of Self. This misunderstanding of what "unselfish service" entails can wind up producing two sick and depleted people when what the giver has to offer simply isn't enough to meet the task.

This kind of sacrifice and "psychic cannibalism" ... even when one is the source of nourishment rather than the one who hungers ... can retard the soul evolution of both parties. An exhausted spirit, obviously, cannot grow, and one who feeds on another rather than learning to support and care for himself isn't making sufficient progress either.

There really are times when saying "No" is a loving and healthy thing ... by refusing to sustain parasitical situations and avoiding the exploitation and manipulation that others can inflict on healers and helpers simply because it's easier for them to be spoon-fed than to learn to feed themselves.

These hangers-on can often play masterfully to a helper's desire for praise and self-validation ... as this has become the strategy by which they get themselves through life. But maintaining this is not the best arrangement for anyone. In time, the inability to care for or even discern his own objective needs places the healer / helper at risk, rendering him of no real use to anyone, least of all himself. He has become no longer a source of help, but one also in need of help. Clearly, this is a step backwards in the overall process of growth.

The soul in need of Centaury is arguably the most sensitive of all the basic natures, and this spirit's ability to blend psychically and easily with others can actually be part of the problem. Again, it's a boundary issue, as one in this state blurs the line between where he ends and another begins. Centaury people have strong intuitive natures, are easily hurt and upset, and can show significant physical symptoms of stress from the loads they habitually carry -- much of whose content may not even rightfully be their own.

Centaury, by strengthening one's rightful self-awareness and sense of responsibility, not only can help maintain the health and integrity of the healer ... but can assist him in finding the courage to tell others they need to do more to help themselves.
