The Art of Surrendering

Traditional thinking leads us to believe that the quality of a full body massage is dependent upon the natural talents and acquired skills of the Massage Therapist. To a certain degree, this is true. Success is, literally, in the hands of the giver.

Little thought is given, though, to the actions of the receiver. Because of their actions, many massage clients cheat themselves by not allowing themselves to "surrender" to the therapist and to "surrender" to the massage itself.

When you, the client, enter the massage studio (whether it is a professional's studio or simply your own bedroom), you enter a world that is far removed from your day to day existence.

Even before you undress, you are naked in the truest sense of the word. Leave everything on the other side of the door. Nothing outside of that room should be of any importance to you.

If you totally surrender to the moment, all of the fears and worries that weigh you down will cease to exist. All that needs to be done in your life will be momentarily forgotten. The world that races by, beyond those walls, will disappear. Just let go. Let it all go.

Once you are inside this most wonderful of all places, things about you that seem significant in the outside world are diminished. Your height is unimportant. Your weight is insignificant. You are beautiful and you should be comfortable with your beauty.

The true beauty of who you are glows from within and refuses to be dimmed. Likewise, the beauty of what you are outside refuses to be covered. Remove your clothes -- all that covers you -- and find the joy that comes with being naturally you.

Lie down on the massage table. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply, but slowly. Allow your body to melt into the table. Relax and prepare your mind and body for the bliss that is to come.

The important, but sometimes difficult, part now is to surrender yourself totally to your Massage Therapist. All responsibility for the massage now falls on him/her. There is nothing you have to do except enjoy the experience.

Don't try to do any of the work yourself. Relax and let the therapist do it all. Your failure to remain tranquil and calm throughout the massage actually prevents the therapist from accomplishing his/her goal -- to give you a superb massage.

If you are unable to completely relax, it is time to look within and figure out the problem.

If you can relax with some therapists, but not with others, the solution can be as simple as not putting yourself in what you know will be an uncomfortable situation. That solution is a little too simplistic, though. You owe it to yourself, and to the affected therapist(s), to figure out what about the situation makes you uneasy.

The most frequent complaint I hear about other therapists is not about the therapists personally, but about their studios. If there is something about a studio that you dislike, and if you feel comfortable speaking with the therapist about it, please do so.

Your comments may offend the therapist at first, but if something bothers you, it probably bothers other people as well. It is in the therapist's best interest to know.

If you are unable to "surrender" to a particular therapist, it is best to just choose another therapist, but you should determine exactly why that therapist has a negative effect on you. Don't feel that it is all your fault, though. All Massage Therapists are not compatible with all clients.

You actually may have never given any thought to "the art of surrendering." It may even be that the "problem" is with you. Think back to how you remember feeling when getting a massage. The next time you get a massage, make an effort to be aware of how you really feel and how the therapist perceives your behavior. It may require some effort on your part, but "surrendering" totally will greatly enhance your massage experience.
